Title: FOIL Fellowship of the Ring SET (all 365 cards)......
Post by: jonobgood on September 01, 2010, 04:18:14 AM
I've got one and wondering what you think a good value would be for it.  I'm contemplating Ebay but perhaps someone on here would be serviousely interested.

Oh ya, I guess I forgot the two P cards.  It's been a long time.

PS - $250?!?!?  No way dude, it's gotta be way more than that.  The whole set is FOILED.  Singular cards from this set FOILED go for $20 or more.   The Ring alone is probably worth $50.

You have to consider that the large bulk of the set would be worth $.25-$.50 cents/card (the commons and uncommons, excluding Sam, Son of Hamfast and a few key others) and that the best card in the set (Goblin Armory) has had two foil copies sitting on eBay for $30 and $40, respectively, for at least three months.

Just curious about Sam, Son of Hamfast, why is this card excluded, and what is the approximate value of it?

Well, it took me WAY more money to put a foiled set together. I would say that, BECAUSE it is a complete set, it is worth more than the sum of its parts. Complete foil base sets appear on ebay maybe once a year and there is no telling how much you can get for it. The last round of those sets went for $450-$500 a piece, because a couple of people were keen on getting them and they knew how rarely you get the chance to get one so conveniently.

I would say: KEEP IT! You could end up giving it away for a mere pittance and even if you do get half a grand for it, you may regret it later.

The last foil FotR set I saw on ebay sold for $311 but it was in an incorrect category.  In the correct catagory, it would probably go for 350-400.  You would get more for the cards indiviually, but that is a lot of extra listing fees.

that really should justify my price suggestion, as a) this foiled RotK is overpriced and b) a RotK foil set is worth same or maybe just a bit less than a FotR one, especially considering there's a foil SaWtC in it.
Amen.

true, but maybe one day, I would consider bying that foil set:

Gandalf, Manager of Wizards, Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver, Anduril, Flame of the West, Noble Leaders, Gimli, Feared Axeman, Preparations, Eowyn's Sword, Dernhelm's Blade, Merry, Swordthain... I must say you missed some cards, ket.

When we talk about foiled sets of FotR, TTT, BoHD, EoF or RotK, we really have to keep in mind that these sets had not been readily through WTG as the other movie block sets. Hardcore collectors either spent/are spending fortunes on compiling sets from scratch or wait for the rare opportunity to bid on one. If two or more collectors happen upon such an auction, I believe that no one knows where that auction price will end up.

Again, players are mostly interested in foiling their beloved decks and therfore don't care for most of the other cards. Most collectors care about having a non-foil collection, because 6 foils per display (with only 1 rare foil at that!) was just too expensive to even contemplate, when the sets came out.

Collecting foil sets requires a completely different mind-set that does not really go along with the typical rules of the market, i.e. YOU ARE NOT IN IT TO TURN A PROFIT!

Thus, I say it again: If you have a foil set of FotR (or TTT or RotK etc.), strongly consider keeping it to enjoy over and over again.

Thanks for the input guys.  Perhaps you're (other than ununtrium) a different generation of player.  I have been in this game since the beginning, during the golden years when nothing was rotated out, when the cards from this set were all at the top of your list in wanting to aquire.

To me, these are worth alot more and to even contemplate selling for anything even close to what you're suggesting is crazy (very hard to believe one sold for $311).  I also believe you're quoting 'rock bottom' selling prices on Ebay which isn't really fair.  An average selling price is much more accurate.  Plus, like mentioned by ununtrium, there are intagibles to having all the cards together as one piece.

No offence, but i'd love to hear from some veteran guys who have been around for awhile that can appreciate this collection.  One Fathom?  Any thoughts on value here?  HawkEyeSPF?  Anyone else?

were I not into MLB Showdown 2000, I would have never seen that Aragorn Starter deck in the game shop at the mall and my LOTR journey would have never started...I still have my MLB Showdown collection which is worth very little now :(

I'm not who you are hoping to hear from. But I agree with ket.
It's worth what someone is willing to pay, and based on the last couple of complete foil sets on eBay it's right about what he's marked it at.

Individually, the cards are worth more, but as a set the value is less than sum of its parts.

Back in the day it would have been worth much, much more. But there are just so few of us out there still playing (and even fewer still who are collecting foils), that you'd be marketing these to a very small contingent of people.

To me, these are worth alot more and to even contemplate selling for anything even close to what you're suggesting is crazy (very hard to believe one sold for $311).

Sounds like they are worth too much to you to sell then. And that's great! If you did sell them, you might regret it.

But on eBay right now there are unsold complete foil sets of Realms ($40), Mines ($30), Mt. Doom ($45), and Return of the King ($299).

Unfortunately, eBay is one of the largest marketplaces in the world, and is a great indicator of current monetary value (for better or worse).

If you think we're undervaluing your collection, and you still wish to sell it, then you should set a price that you are willing to part with it at. If it doesn't sell, then keep it and enjoy it! I myself have rooms full of collections that would fetch next to nothing at market, but which I wouldn't part with for anything. And even more collections that I don't particularly care for anymore, but aren't currently worth enough for me to warrant selling them.

Don't sell, I play since RotEL and I know the worth of certain cards. All above mentioned arguments are -perhaps sadly- true. These are not the days for selling great collections, there are only the last of Lotr Scavengers, looking for cheap deals. It is a classic case of offer and demand.....

rubbercarp, do you run ccgsingles.com? (I ask because I noticed you posted an advertisement of a foil sale).  Do you know what you have valued the set at when totalling up everything individually?  I took a quick look and can guesstimate it's well over $2000 (possibly over $3000) based on your own list prices of those cards.

It's just hard to swallow, i'm disappointed most of you guys think the value is so low.

Well, it looks like i'll be breaking this puppy up then.  If most people are in agreement that there are not going to be any buyers willing to shell out some serious cash for the set i'm going to have to maximize the value and sell pieces at a time.

Rubbercarp is the proprietor of that website.

Yep.

I was a player for many years (started with Fellowship), got out when Shadows came around, and got back in about a year and half ago. Once I built the 30 or so decks that I wanted, I turned to selling my extra cards, but selling singles on eBay got to be too expensive when they changed their Store Formats so I tried building a website. About half of my buyers are from TLHH. The other half wander in from Google, or god knows where.

P.S. You also have to keep in mind that 80% of those singles will never sell unless someone in a niche market wants to make a deck and happens to need Orc Scimitar.

Probably closer to 90 or 95% =)
The majority of the foils just sit there, but I'm not out to sell all my foils at once. If I was, then I would would expect to only be able to move a complete foil set for $300 =)

It's just what they sell for.

My site is primarily for buyers who need a few cards to complete a deck, or a set or whatever. And are priced accordingly.

And Ket is right on! Don't be disappointed in us for thinking the value is so low. Be disappointed that the value is so low.

And again, rather than take our word for it, post it for sale at a price that you would like. I'd love to be proven wrong! Most foil collectors dream of putting together "the complete set" I'd love to know that its value is on the rise!

In fact, I ran some numbers.

Less than 5% of the cards that I've sold have been FOILS since opening the site in March.

The reason for this is because there is a smaller market for foils, and my foils are overpriced. Like I said (and ket said) my foils are priced for the player who only needs a few to foil a deck or complete a collection. And even then are probably overpriced.

Unfortunately everyone so far is correct about the value. I've been piecing together my FOTR Foil set since the game came out, and it's still not complete. I don't build decks and I don't buy individual cards at market price. I Buy boxes of unopened cards when the price is a steal, or I trade cards I have duplicates of for cards I need to complete my collection. I only buy a single if it's IMPOSSIBLE to find, and I need it to complete a collection. Once I finish my collection, I won't ever sell it. Why? I know I won't ever get back what I put into it, and only some of the singles will sell for much money if at all. That's why I don't dump money into individual cards in order to complete my collection, since I know it's a loss already. BTW - I am interested in completing my collection if you are going to sell your set off in chunks. Here's what I need:

FE Foils

Ancient Chieftain (foil) Rare FE 1x
Boromir, Lord of Gondor (foil) Rare FE 1x
Celeborn, Lord of Lorien (foil) Rare FE 1x
Desperate Defense of the Ring (foil) Rare FE 1x
Gimli's Battle Axe (foil) Rare FE 1x
Pursuit Just Behind (foil) Rare FE 1x
Servant of the Secret Fire (foil) Rare FE 1x
Sting (foil) Rare FE 1x
Thin and Stretched (foil) Rare FE 1x
