The current server hosting your games is going to be shutdown for real in a near future, meaning we have to find a new host if you still want to play Lotr on GCCG.
Requirements:
- Linux/Unix OS
- 24/7 uptime (including network)
- Server uses light network and memory resources (even an old server can handle the charge)
Anyone able to find/provide some help, please drop a message.

I am not very familiar with servers and hosting, but correct me if I am wrong:
- When the server shuts down, GCCG will still run, but there will be no tables available, right?
- Any computer can be a server? Is Linux/Unix OS a must?
- If no permanent server is found, can any of us simply create a table and host for the time we need to play? I understand it is possible to create and host additional tables as Tbiesty did not so long ago and if any of us can do that, then that could be an alternative until a more suitable server is found.

No, the lobby will be gone too, so you won't be able to connect.

Not ANY. Must be unix based.

No, lobby will be unavailable, so no tables.

too bad:( a week today since i installed gccg, and then the servers are shut down:( really bad luck......
-
I have been enjoying lotr on gccg very much in the past month. I don't have a unix based computer. Nor I understand anything about hosting and such. But can i do something? Donate money for server or something like that?
-
i also installed gccg a week ago...
just got into the game and then we have this problem... i hope that the regular plazers will stick around on forum...
-
How big the server has to be? I have an idea, but I need more info.

Not much.
Few megs for storage, few memory for games (depends how many tables are running), small network connection.

I have a PC at home, my network connection is almost flawless (almost 24/7, drops every day at the exact same time for a few seconds, and it is back up). I could provide it as a server. But the PC has Windows XP atm. If I am provided with some basic instructions and a Unix download link, I'll pop it up there.
Conf.
Pentium 3 (@ 800 mhz, can easily be clocked a bit)
128 Mb graohics card, 256 ram, about 30 Gb hard disk.
Can anything be done with that?

Aiieee! I had almost thought of trying to set this up in tandem with the lotrtcgdb.com web hosting, but I think it would require an upgrade of my hosting account by a fair $$$ amount. wlk, will it be possible to preserve the current usernames/collection records?
EDIT: BTW, is this GCCG in general, or just the LotR module that is being shut down? :-k
EDIT2: OK, might be able to do it cheaper than I expected with VPS hosting. ETA?

If you could set it up, I think we'd have little trouble finding people who would help by small donations.
-

This is just the Lotr Module being shut down as the MECCG one still works fine.
-
:(
-
Its also METW.
-
Only GCCG working is magic, cause its run on another server already.

can't we just find out who is hosting it and try to ask for our game to be hosted too?

The whole server is being shutdown, including all other hosted games and modules source repositories.
Sourceforge is hosting only the core module (no specific game stuff).
We have some backup for the user database/collection.

Netrunner is being moved on a new host too.

I got a pc avaiable as well, but it needs to get linux on it and I dont know if my inetconnection is sufficient enough and what more is needed.
-
And how much is the traffic? I have this current idea of hiring host services in my country. Will it work?
p.s. sorry, i posted this in the wrong topic.

I'm thinking about VPS -- http://www.lowendbox.com/ for ideas? $3/month (QuickWeb) isn't too bad, and I doubt GCCG needs that much memory. This seems to be the easiest way. My current hosting provider does not give me root access or let me install the Linux modules I need (specifically SDL) without upgrading to "business" class (+$20/month).

Indeed, the best deal here is about 17€/month to get a Linux box with at least a SSH+compiler.
-
I'm pretty sure since you get a full (virtual) Linux distro + root access you can do whatever you need to do. I'm not so sure that I'm the best person to run such a server, because I don't much spare time for it. :P
-
Don't tell me ;)
-
wlk, an estimate on memory and bandwidth usage?
-
Not sure, but somehow small footprint.
About 20-30MB/tables I'd say, and network is only using text commands (not much more than an IRC server).
As a comparison, the current(old) server has 1GB RAM and a 512MB link, was hosting several games/tables, source server, and was also a web site for other purposes.
-
wlk, can you add a message to the GCCG server to come to TLHH (lotrtcgdb.com) for updates on the server status, since there are some players who don't have a username here yet and might be stuck when the server goes down?
-
done.
-
What time today (how many hours?) until the server is shutdown?
I'm still on the fence with VPS, but if I decide to go that route, they say it can take up to two days to get the server setup. If I could run TLHH on the new server as well as GCCG, the cost to me would be fairly negligible.
-
There's always the SdA/Hamachi method...
-
NB, how many games have you played in the last year with SdA? Many GCCG users are in their hundreds (jmc is nearly 2,000!). I cut back at around 400 or so. :P
-
What time today (how many hours?) until the server is shutdown?
Consider the server is effectively shutdown. Even if running few more days, no new game will be hosted there.
-
Update:
/me is working on a new server! :)
-
Faithfully, right, good Kralik! =D>
-
Haha. Let's give it a week and see what I can manage. I'm having fun with it--my interest in computers trumps my interest in LotR.
-
Will it be LOTR or GCCG in general.
-
Planning on just LotR. What other GCCG games are not yet covered?
Update: Got a test server set up and seems to be working.
-
Great news Kralik. Thank you for your time and work.
If for some reason things go bad, then maybe small donations could work as well.
I had thought to provide the server via my computer but there is no desktop anymore in house since I'm in move all the time.
-
Update: I've figured out the test server and tried a sample game. Now I'll see if wlk approves and we can try copying the user data over (as well as "beta" test a bit). I'm not sure yet whether we can transition without a client update needed.
Other good news will be that I should be just fine to offer as many tables as needed. Woohoo!
-
Kralik, PM'ed you.
Good news for everyone: the user database, collections and pending saved games should be restored exactly as left on the old server.
-
Gold for both wlk and Kralik!!! :gp: :gp:
-
Any way to exchange that virtual gold for real life $ ? ;)
-
lol I wish! I can give ya gold every 15 minutes or so for a couple hours a day in exchange for a foil ATAR though! I will do it for a month then you can have more gold then everyone here!!!! ;D
-
Update: Test server works, but needs an upgrade (more RAM, faster CPU). I started with quite a low end box and will move it up as needed. Maybe ready to roll by tomorrow, we'll see...? :P
-
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH =D, please please please :D
-
Memory upgrade done, now just tidying up loose ends.
-
You, guys, are AWESOME. Thank God for having you around.
-
The old server is officially down. Want to try the test server (http://lotrtcgdb.com/forums/index.php/topic,6156.0.html) instead?
