Title: Most creative decks you've seen?
Post by: ScottieB on January 20, 2011, 07:09:58 PM
What's the most creative deck you've ever seen / played against?

For me, I recon the Demon of Might deck (here:  http://lotrtcgdb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=4988) would be one of the more inspired I've seen.  Although a solo Smeagol isn't too original in itself, using him to bring back the Balrog is something I would never have thought of!

I built it last night just to see how it plays with some friends.  Didn't do much to it, other than throw out one Dark Places and a Balrog's Sword to fit in two Hosts of Moria so I can grab a card of opportunity if needed.  Also subbed one of the Demon of Might's for a Flame of Udun should I need to do a swarm late game ...

What's the most original you've come across ?

On Fellowship? In Extended, Solo Sam. It uses Sam, Bearer of Great Need as the only companion. The One Ring, the Great Ring lets Sam add strength to survive skirmishes. Resistance comes from lots of Hobbits, and burdens are removed with Home and Hearth. Obviously, it dies to a lot of things - Shadows sites Cavern Entrance or Anduin Confluence, for instance - but it's super fun to watch. Playing against it last weekend, I saw Sam become strength 35 or so, then go from 15 burdens to 2 in one Fellowship phase.

while its nothing new or crazy, i've enjoyed playing my gollum's #$&*@! deck.

it just uses evil smelling fens to make everything a marsh and then bomb on site 4 or 5.

packs a few shelob etc for stopping power.

its a really fun surprise for your opponent.

When Reflections first came out someone in San Antonio had a really interesting ring-bound ranger deck featuring the Red Arrow.  They played Smeagol ring-bearer and a few ring-bound rangers as the main comps.  Then they would use the red arrow to play a Rohan companion who could die to any huge minion while the rangers took care of everything else.  Then add burdens with Smeagol to discard any leftover minions and move again.  It wasn't the most effective deck by any stretch of the imagination and had some major issues, but it sure was creative and entertaining.  The best part was if they played something you just couldn't deal with like Castamir with Raider Halberd he would use the red arrow to play Theoden Tall and Proud, then Theoden would die and pull out another Rohan guy to die in the fierce.  Silly, but hilarious.

I pride myself on building decks that are different from your standard tournament-winning decks. Most of them are not very competitive, but all of them are heaps of fun.

For example, in my Echo of Luthien deck, I run Dear Friends to throw [elf] cards under my draw deck, I run 9 mounted companions and make #$&*@! with Veteran Horseman, I make my hobbits overwhelm Cave Troll of Moria and use Master Proudfoot (to my knowledge, I'm the only one using that card), I have a Dwarven-Rohan archery deck featuring Slaked Thirst, 4 copies of Hand Axe and Weapon Store pulling Hand Axe back, I run Gandalf with Wizard Staff in combo with The Shire Countryside and Staff Asunder, etc.

Those decks are even quite competitive, but most important, I have so much fun building them and playing them.

My vote for the most creative decks, however, would have to go to Kralik's Durin's Secret Society of Dear Friends (http://lotrtcgdb.com/forums/index.php/topic,4077.0.html) and Cw0rks These Are My People (http://lotrtcgdb.com/forums/index.php/topic,2368.0.html) decks. Even though they are not that much fun to play against except when you play against them for the first time... then you're like: "WHAT THE....". Creativity at its best.

Note that all these decks are Pre-Shadows and in contrast to open, there are X-Lists, but as Thranduil said: "Restrictions breed creativity and all that." ;)

My Mallorn-trees deck. Died to Dead Ones. That's creative.

Ha, I remember. That was great!

I was just about to reply with my own Durin's deck (my "claim to fame"), but I see that hrcho beat me to it. Also, Heije has a pretty fun LttG deck that I thought was rather creative (but I cannot reveal its secrets).

Is there a deck list anywhere for this? Sounds fun!

No Ringbearer.  Fruit-loop decks are so cheap.

i will go with some decks :

this is the top of the top of creative decks :
 http://www.decktech.net/lotr/decks/decks.php?deck=33930
a deck with million combos inside,in the hands of an expert (and only expert player) this deck had 99% of winning.

also
b) a discard deck i saw in official lotr online tcg with melon.

c ) shadow side with million of  possessions playing in support area and a couple of uruks+sauron trolls etc

d ) a deck with gimli ringbearer (with ring of hunter3), isildur (with 1 res) faramir (hunter 2,exert to heal) aragorn (hunter 2 , exert to exert ) and gandalf , with quite a lot of combos and answers to everything. For the three hunters , cool healing , blood runs chills, possessions removal, strong companions etc )

e) 4 hobbits - cheap frodo, sam that sees hobbits to get pumped , wobas pippin and merry friend to sam, smeagol always helps : initiative abuse + shire countryside + choke .
ps : i hate solo decks ,at least when i used to play against cause i never liked to be chocked.I have seen frodo, smeagol, sam, galadriel solo.
(i am quite sure i have met more decks that were very creative but dont ring a bell)

Thanks Kralik, for pointing out my deck. I too think it is creative  and against any new players it has an almost perfect sheet. I'd like to point out that you too have some creative versions of lttg, not to mention your dear friends deck, that must be the best legal deck in movie, be it very boring too :D. I mean, I took it to a tournament, to play vs some of the best Dutch players from back in the days. They were in awe when they realized what was happening. For those not knowing that deck, well to throw out some specifics:

- move to 9 in possible 3 steps
- dish out 13 exertions/wounds before skirmish
- heal up to 12 wounds in regroup
- have no drawdeck left at site 2

Sounds original to me

Durin's Society of Dear Friends - Kralik (movie)
News From the Mark - Cw0rk (TS)
Evil Men Stacking Fierce Mega Swarm - smallman (standard)
Powerful Guide - Olorin (standard)
Slinker Pipeweed - Gil-Estel (TS) *I like my version better though, Heije must get the credit for the idea. :)

Hm... i faced many creative decks, but my memory is a little bit rusty...

My most creative deck should be Balrog Launch on Standard or my movie The Three Stooges fellowship.

by the way: is anyone having probems to acess GCCG? I tried yesterday and it was working but today server seems out (i would just pass by to see what was rolling anyway)

I like my pipe-weed deck a lot. I never knew any people who played anything like it.

One of my friends did something like elven telepathy (I think) he used it to kill your minions strength.
