Well, here we go: last friday my friend madgoblin arrived late. After uploading the lugage, the coke, my medicine and my passport we were ready to go. We had a nice 8-hour drive when we arrived in the nice city of Bayreuth. Wanted to check in to the youthhostel, but the group who had checked in for all of us had just left to the city. When we contacted the organisator of the tourny, we found all of them, including Olorin at a gameshop. There were some games going on and people trying to trade some. Later that night we went back to the hostel and we went to our rooms. Madgoblin and I shared a room with Olorin and his brother and 2 other german (little) guys. Started some trading and some deckbuilding.
That last part was somewhat difficult for me. As allways I don't want to bring my best deck, for it has to be fun to play with and to play against. I'd rather bring a deck that has the potential to hurt, but is fun nonetheless. So I built a Lost to the Goblins deck. I will post the deck later, since I'm at my work now and don't have access to my SDA files.
Saturday came early, or should I say that friday ended late?....We went to breakfast, which was nice and we moved to the room where the tourny was to be held. They had a table standing with all kinds of displays with older boosters and some starters...The morningperson I am noticed a few nice starters: 2x Hunters and 3x RoS. Immediately they were mine and I was so nice to share them with madgoblin. It turned out to be quite a catch since they included Aragorn, Defender of Rohan, Mumak Commander, GATS, Ugluk, ugly fellow, Otsea 2x and a few others. Our day started nice.
#1 game: Gil Estel's Gloin/Arwen/Aragorn/Pippin engine and LttG vs Basti's Huge Elves and Hunter Uruks
I bid 2 and let this guy start. He was the runner up last European tourny, so he ought to be good. He started with the prancing pony which is supposed to be good for me. He starts building his deck and moved. Went to site 3 and I didn't do much. I walked, totally forgot to pull Arwen, which is needed in my deck. I moved also and stopped moving. He walked and created once more a huge ammount of twilight. I started to use the Palanthir of Orthanch, Far seeing Stone to put shadow under my deck, which is the whole point of the deck, getting the freeps out, the shadow back in and lay down a LttG bomb. He stopped moving since I played Crags of Emyn Muil. I pulled Arwen due to my own copy of The Prancing Pony but then I had to reshuffle my deck, wich isn't good. By this time he recognized the deck and he starts sweating....nice to see an experienced guy being nervous, which is a sign of the potential of your deck ofcourse. To make a long story a bit shorter, he managed to stay out of reach, running like crazy and I couldn't hit him...But he was really nice and fun to play against.
#2 game: Gil Estel's Gloin/Arwen/Aragorn/Pippin engine and LttG vs MadGoblin Elves and Evil man Archery
Bomber!! Second game and already playing against a friend who knew my deck very well, where surprise is a basic element of the deck. It was a bit dissapointing playing against eachother and to make a long story not too long -again- I had to unleash the bomb too early which resulted in a 1 burden short situation...2 losses in a row #-o
#3 game Gil Estel's Gloin/Arwen/Aragorn/Pippin engine and LttG vs Julian's Rohan and.....?....
I don't remember his shadow anymore, but that is due to him not hitting me. My fellowship was close to untouchable it seemed. This was a nice game. I had to reveal LttG a few times, he saw a few orcs, a gollum and a few Isengard minions, but he didn't know what to expect. Thinking about swarm, didn't make sence, and so he was torturing himself. He was running Rohan with Gimli ringbearer to be able to get rid of some shadow conditions. The problem was with Gimli he had a lower resistance ringbearer. But he was feeling pretty convident and he reached site 8 without wounds, fully loaded and he didn't see the lingering danger coming...I hit him with a bomb and so he was corrupted
#4 game Gil Estel's Gloin/Arwen/Aragorn/Pippin engine and LttG vs a german guy that ran Gondor and ...?...
Again I don't remember his shadow, and again for a reason! He didn't touch me. The problem was that he was running an ridiculous high resistance Isildur. 14  How to deal with that? I don't know. I almost got to him, cause he didn't ran, for he was scared of something not knowing what. I was cycling my deck just perfect, just waiting for my Throne of the Dark Lord to appear, for I would need it. It turned out to be the last card of the deck. I had to reconcile, drew 2 cards that were put under. I had put 12 shadowcards under my deck and the stupidity was that I drew 2 off them, after the 12 I just put everything under there....unleashing the bomb I revealed the rest of the 10 shadow cards and 2 fellowship, adding 'only' 10 burdens + a throne of the dark lord....too bad, it was a bit frustrating........So I lost again
Game #5 Gil Estel's Gloin/Arwen/Aragorn/Pippin engine and LttG vs Chris Klose and his rainbow direct wounding and turbo corruption
Well this shadow I will mention, for it was nasty! He could selfassign his nazguls and that hurt. Gloin died early, at site 2. That hurts.....a lot. I need Gloin to make my deck work, and that was tough. He was running a very low resistance ringbearer though and therefor I needed to try to corrupt him. I had 2 LttG's at site 4, let them loose and he was on 5 burdens. Site 5 I had another and that was it...this game I got lucky, for he would have torn me apart in no time. He was also a great person to play against....I loved it and it was a good closure off the first day.
3 games lost, but 2 off them were soooooooo close.
That night we had a Two Towers draft which was great fun. We were to open a draftpack first, take a good look at them and after that we opened 3 boosters. I didn't look to well and then I got all these lovely cards. Axe of Erebor, Final Count and My axe is Notched. Too bad I had no Legolas or Gimli to make the party work . Still I won 3 out of 4 games, which gave me 5th place
Sunday
I wanted to have something to hit with this day, I wanted some sort of revenge. So I built this Eomer Shadowplay deck that hurts. I paired it with Evil man archery with a mean twist. Isengard Ruined and Saruman, SoS were to visit the party. It is/was a tough deck, with loads of everything.
game #1 My Eomer/Merry/Eowyn/Aragorn and Evil men archery vs his Dwarves and Evil men Archery
This sucked!!! Big time. I was drawing not too well and he made little to no twilight. Still I was able to shoot him up real bad, but somehow he drew Ring of Fury every turn :-S. That was a 4x heal each turn...That made it really tough, low twilight, loads of healing. At the same time I gave him enough twilight + he cancelled a serious wounding possibility by playing Pavise. And 1 site before I could get to him, he played Grieving the Fallen on my main wound absorber Merry Swordthain. All my companions were exhasuted and he finished it...so close, but yet so far away :'(
game #2 My Eomer/Merry/Eowyn/Aragorn and Evil men archery vs Kadafi's Strong elfs and Besiegers.
Well this was nice, not only because of the fact I won, which is always nice, but because he -the brother of Olorin and Kadafi isn't his real name- was a very cool guy! We had such a good laugh during our game and he was such a sport! Credits for him.
He was having the toughest time, for his besiegers came in play practically exhausted due to Shadowplay and they were finished by either Aragorn's bow, Eomer's Spear, Trusty Weapon, or just Eowyn exerting. I wanted a shadowkill so I just let him walk ahead and at site 8, due to me remembering him to heal at 6 ;), I killed him.
game #3 My Eomer/Merry/Eowyn/Aragorn and Evil men archery vs his Rohan/Uruk Hunters.
This was bad too! Not only did I find my opponent a bit annoying (he was talking to him self, giggled like a little girl and was too happy for himself) his deck was even worse. I had a nice shadowhand which I could play. When I reconciled to play my own fellowship I hadn't much support. I played a mount, a border patrol, and Eowyn which gave him 12 pool. He played Ugly Fellow and Saruman Agent of the Dark Lord. Ough....that combo killed both Eomer and Merry. That sucked. Still I managed to get to site 7 where Frodo finally fell after losing Eowyn and Aragorn along the way......
game #4 My Eomer/Merry/Eowyn/Aragorn and Evil men archery vs Madgoblin's Ringbound Hobbits and Corsairs
So again I was playing vs MAdgoblin....I guess we both were tired and I got the best of it. He made some stupid mistakes which costed him the game. I shot him up real bad. Site 5 kill I guess. Wasn't it for his mistakes though, he would have given me a hard time.
Well that was it. My first European Event. It was so much fun, met some great people, Nina, Daniel, Voss, Basti, Olorin, Kadafi, Chris, the Leipzig brothers, Lars....and I had fun with them! Best part of the weekend was probably the trading! Got 2x mountain troll, 3x in the wildman's wake, 2x Gandalf, Powerful Guide, 9x MW foils, Gandalf Returned, and many, I say many more!
I ended at a 18th place out of the 23, but I'm not lying when I say that could have been much better! Madgoblin finished 11th, so he was satisfied as well.
