Title: Merfolk Control (Block)
Post by: SomeRandomDude on August 21, 2008, 06:53:46 AM
Merfolk rock with control. From Blue to Black to White. So...I decided I'm gonna take a whack and a W/U/B Merfolk deck loaded with control done merfolk style.

Mana Base:

Wanderwine Hub x 4
Fetid Heath x 4
Sunken Ruins x 4
Reflecting Pool x 4
Island x 3
Plains x 3
Swamp x 2

Merrow Reejery x 4
Cold-Eyed Selkie x 4
Surgespanner x 4
Judge of Currents x 2
Hollowsage x 4

Merrow Commerce x 2

Soul Reap x 4
Oblivion Ring x 4
Dream Fracture x 4
Familiar's Ruse x 4

Anyways, the point of the deck is to protect your guys with counters from getting killed, while O-ringing or Soul Reaping other dudes to death. Then, you use Hollowsage to empty their hand, hopefully, allowing you to have complete control over the game. Procede to use Merrow Reejery to do fun stuff, while Judge grabs you life, until finally, you can go offensive and swing for a lot.

Tips?

I think any deck that plays Rejeerey would benefit from Stonybrook Banneret, as well as Sage's Dousing and perhaps even some copies of Sower of Temptation. Also, Cryptic Command is missing, and I don't see why it should be. I think Ajani and Jace could probably fit in well, too, probably in the sideboard, though.

So? Have you seen Quick'n'Toast playing? The same deck runs Cloudthresher and Cryptic Command, not to mention Firespout (payed with red a lot of times) and some black cards...
I also run a UGB Mannequin Block deck, and I run Cryptic Command in it with not much effort.

Cryptic Command is just that good.

And so are Reflecting Pool and Vivid Lands. ;) You DO lose a bit of tempo, but hey, it's well worth it for being able to go into a format meant for Wizards to concentrate on monocolored (or bicolored) tribal aggro decks and simply play "5-color good stuff". Totally worth it.
