There are several cards that say "play a companion" or "play the balrog"

namely:
Gandalf the Grey Wizard
Power and Terror

because there is no specification as to where you should play these cards from, could I play them from my discard pile or draw deck if they aren't in my hand.

Using gandalf, I exert him to play boromir defender of minas tirith from my draw deck... ?

Whenever it says "play something" its default meaning is to play from hand. If it was to be played from anywhere else it would've been specified. Such as Host of Thousands or Captured by the Ring.

The same goes for "discard something". Its default meaning is "discard from play". If it was from anywhere else, it would've been specified as is the case with Dwarven Axe or Orc Inquisitor.
