Title: Elven Wound with Morgul Archery
Post by: uncle_elrond on February 25, 2011, 11:15:12 AM
Galadriel, Bearer of Wisdom
The One Ring, AtaR
Legolas, Elven Stalwart
Arwen, Queen of Elves and Men

Lorien Swordsman x2
Cirdan, The Shipwright
Gil-Galad, Elven High King
Sam, Son of Hamfast
Rumil, Elven Protector
Asfaloth
Gwemegil
Long-Knives of Legolas
Nenya
Elven Bow x4
Elven Sword x4
Blades Drawn x2
Shadow Between
Strength of Arms
The Splendor of Their Banners
Company of Archers x2
Double Shot x3
Feathered x3
That is No Orc Horn x2

Gothmog, Morgul Commander x3
Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul
Morgul Ambusher x4
Morgul Hound x3
Morgul Lurker x4
Morgul Squealer x2
Morgul Whelp x4
Gollum, Plotting Deceiver
Fat One Wants It x2
Flung into the Fray x2
Streaming to the Field x4
Ten Times Outnumbered x2
Captured by the Ring x3

Yes it has a lot of companions, but I usually don't play them all.  If I need one I will, otherwise I'll just discard him.  This deck can either archery things to death or spread the wounds around and then use those wounds to help me win skirmishes.  So far it's proved to be surprisingly solid, but it could probably use a few tweaks.  Ideas?

My shadow is one of the best morgul archery decks I've tried.  Gollum adds threats for the Ambusher and Streaming to the Field for both the Morgul Lurker and Gothmog.  Unfortunately it can be fairly inconsistent.  I've won at Site 5 by dealing 17 archery and last time it lost was to Dauntless Hunter and Vilya keeping Streaming to the Field off the table.  Morgul Hounds aren't too great, but I didn't know what would be better in those slots.  Any ideas how to make it more powerful?

Morgul Hounds are awesome. They're almost as good as Morgul Whelp. I'd switch Plotting Deceiver for Dark as Darkness because he can help a lot with exerting the RB (which is not only an extra wound, but also helps Morgul Whelp and Morgul Hound) and I'd switch 1 Gothmog, Morgul Commander for Gorbag, Covetous Captain. Gorbag can help a lot in skirmishes and Gothmog is too expensive to have 3 of him.

I disagree with hrcho. If initiative bomb archery is the key to this deck, as it looks like, I'd consider 4 Gothmog. That's the card that this deck is designed around. I do agree with Dark as Darkness, the better Gollum that can do many useful things for you. You could even think about Evil Smelling Fens to be able to pull back a minion of your choice, removing a Morgul Hound (the weakest minion, I think.)

The reason I was using Plotting Deceiver over Dark as Darkness was the ability to play him from my discard pile when I have initiative.  With Fat One Wants It, I can add threats without CBTR.  Next time I play this I'll use Dark as Darkness see how it goes.  I have noticed a tendency to get stuck with extra Gothmogs, so switching one to Gorbag is probably a good idea.  I can get a lot of archery without Gothmog and I think the potential for extra wounds during skirmish will only help me out.

As ramolnar suggested, Evil Smelling Fens could be a good choice for you, but only if you decide to go with Plotting Deceiver. Dark as Darkness already exerts himself so you don't get the full potential.

Also, when I was building Morgul Archery deck, I also used 2-3 copies of Morgul Creeper. Since I always prefer a Shadow Kill over Fellowship win, I often bid 0 and let people go first (this has also been the cause of my many losses, but those wins make up for it). Many players will bid 1 to go first. I just used Pelennor Flat* which provided a win-win situation -> 2 burdens or initiative. I also run Northern Ithilien and you'd be amazed how many times I managed to corrupt my opponent with my Morgul Archery deck.

If you won't run Morgul Creeper then take Steward's Tomb as your site 5. It's a good site even for your freeps.

I like running Morgul Skulker x2 in my morgul archery deck to shuffle back whaterver minions are most important for repeated use.

You might wanna change to Legolas Archer of Mirkwood. There will be very few chances of 3 wounded minions anyway. Most of the time shadow will just let one die. Or Arwen is extremely effective.

And with all the archers definitely use Aegnor. Archer of Mirkwood and Aegnor is a great elf archer combo...

Actually making them the starting fellowship is a better idea I think. With bow of the galadhrim of course.

As for shadow why don't you put both Plotting deceiver and Dark as Darkness in and remove whatever you want. So you can get Plotting deceiver if you have initiative and Dark as Darkness with CBTR.

As I've been playing this deck, I've realized that Elven Stalwart never works.  They always kill minions to prevent him from winning.  Archer of Mirkwood is probably the better call here.  I don't know how I forgot Aegnor, he definitely would come in handy.  I'll drop a Lorien Swordsman to add him in.  Shadow Between is in there already though.

I'm not sure if running both Gollums will work, but I'll try it next time to see if it makes a difference.  I'll probably drop a Morgul Hound for him.
