I have been looking for work since immigrating to Vancouver, Canada, and as I have way too much time on my hands I have been thinking a lot about what job I would really like, how much I want to earn etc...
So, why do you work in the job you have?

I work for a university newspaper, which is obviously not a real job, but it's stressful nonetheless. I do it because every week I walk in and I never know where I'll end up. I could be interviewing cheerleaders, or visiting Sikh temples, or getting shot at by police officers.
I've done all three. :-)

I work for the church in facilities management. At least until I commission. I'm a Cadet in the US Air Force. I serve cause I care about my country and my family. I think, as part of the heroic journey (look up Joseph Campell) it is important to serve. One of those rites of passage.

I work for the State's Supreme Court of Law, for two reasons:
1 - Because it was a great job (you had to take a test to get in, and only hte first X candidates got in) when I was only 20 and still in college - it pays well enough considering wages in Brazil, it's an afternoon-only job with 35 hours a week, I get small (but added up) raises for every course I take and stuff like (I got a substantial one after graduating in Law, and will get another one now after specialization) this aside from one raise, at least, a year, and I can't actually get fired except after an administrative lawsuit that proves I did something absurd or ilegal;
2 - I learn a lot and it helps me since I want to take yet another test (much, much harder) to become a State Judge in the near future.

I work for a hotel/restaurant supervising meeting rooms. Its a promotion i got from my old waitering job and I see it as a path up to banqueting/restaurant manager.

right now i'm a freelance lawn/landscape/construction/whatever man. i've even put up christmas decorations for money. and that pays the bills while i'm studying mechanical engineering.
so eventually i will get a job related to mechanical engineering, which is sweet because you get to design stuff. like the other day i got this idea for a new style of machete. ordinarily i'd just have to file it away somewhere in my brain or at best sketch it out on graph paper. but because of my studies i was able to quickly make a model of it on the computer, until i accidentally closed it without saving....
but engineering is a very useful thing for everyday life, and plus it pays very well.

I did that last Christmas. Had some fun times climbing ladders and peoples houses in the snow.

I am a teacher, for the most ideological reasons possible. I want to teach kids and bring them up to sensible citizens.... One day it goes better than the other I must say :D

yeah, no kidding. this last january when i was taking a christmas tree down for these people, i had packed up the decorations and took them out to storage. and then i found a brass elvis presley ornament on the floor. so i meant to put it with the others on my way out, ended up bringing it home with me on accident.
just returned it to them this morning. haha.

I work in the school cafeteria. Because its on-campus and gives me a ton of hours. Then as far as unpaid, I also write for the school paper.
(Undergrad school).

I'm also an undergrad working on mechanical engineering. I work at my schools tutor center and as a private tutor whenever I can. I tutor math, chemistry, and, on occasion, physics. Private pays well, but its harder to get.
