You know, this is one deep sentence, right here. Consider the whole story. The book dates back to the middle of last century, Tolkien himself was pretty old already when he wrote it, almost every single race is unnaturaly long-lived, the creatures are also old (or enduring, and dating back to early ages), the world itself has gone through some epic stuff already...
I mean, I'd be surprised if ANYTHING at all that lived on Middle Earth lived less than a century.

Again, only because they died at the end of adventurer's swords or smeagol's claws. Men, because they either killed each other, or killed themselves by jumping out of a roof "after running the length of a football field, ON FIRE" (this alone shows how tough they all are). If left unchecked, they'd probably live to a hundred, at least.
