Title: Tourney!
Post by: Doom on July 08, 2011, 09:45:31 AM
A bit of history:
I've been playing LOTR TCG for quite some time now-mostly with physical cards. However, recently, I've been starting to explore the world of online play with GCCG.
After a few games, I'm starting to wonder: has there been any initiative to create an actual tournament online using GCCG? Unfortunately, I started playing just after the last tournaments in my area died [Men], but have been told over and over how much fun they are, and how much they help you to improve. I also understand that there is some sort of league play, but after trying out GCCG for a week or so, I haven’t really seen any evidence of this.
So what about an online tournament?  :up:/  Is it possible? Or has it already been done and I just missed it somewhere…

And yes, WTK, I did use the search function before I posted.

That's unfortunate. I guess it would be kind of hard to get a bunch of people together online. Oh well..

Still though, it could be possible, with more people off in the summer? Suggestions, anyone?

i think that if you want it to work you have to have a bracket system. maybe a double elimination tournament. ending after maybe a month with a clear and definitive winner. everythng else has seemed to die fairly quickly.

Personally, I think that a tourney type thing would work a lot better if it was formatted like professional futbol leagues. i.e. each player is allowed to play one league game every week, a win is three points, and a loss or not playing is worth 1 point.

oh I see. but then that's a league, not a tournament.

I doubt everyone will be able to be online at a certain time due to different timezones or work/family commitments. There is only one possible way to have a tournament on GCCG though as I see it. We could get people to sign up, and then generate a list of fixtures and leave the players to sort out among themselves when do they meet up with the opponent within the next 7 days for the match. The results could be posted on the forum and a new fixture list could be generated showing the next matchup. This method isn't foolproof though. No-shows/match-fixing will ruin the fun for others. And there's the issue of prizes as well. But all in all, I do hope TLHH will have a successful tourney and soon. :)

I doubt a tournament is feasible now, unfortunately, since there really has been very little or no interest in this threat at all, and a tournament would take, at least, a lot of players to participate. Feel free to contact me about the standard/expanded league, though.

I played in a couple of MTG tournaments hosted on MTGsalvation.com. They all went the following way:
- Someone volunteered to be the administrator and hosted the tourney (he couldn't play in the tourney, so this was the hardest part)
- Everyone had to send their decklists to the administrator and post their deck security codes in the signup thread (is there something like a security code for decks on gccg? some code that is unique to all decks?)
- Every round lasted a week, so participants had time to figure out when can they play their games (using an IM client or facebook is useful, but PM can work as well)

This system worked flawlessly in a couple of tournaments I played in, guess it can work here too. If gccg has no "security codes" for decks, that's not a big problem if we all trust each other, I don't think that anyone could be such jerk to cheat in a tournament played only for fun.

GCCG has a deck check at the beginning of each game. as far as i know that is the only security measures in place.

You can use the /rd option to register a deck.

Which is probably more people than all the people playing LotR TCG IRL all over the world, which is to say something about the system being great.

ha, right on. Yea my friend and i just started playing irl again. ONly have cards through two towers sets but a lot of cards. Just found out abuot Gccg and am excited though still a little confused on a few mechanics. But after some more practice i should be good. also need to catch up on return of the king since it looks like the games i have peaked in on all play all the new cards. Is there much interest in just fellowship or two towers open block?

Yeah, both FotR and Towers Standard are pretty popular.
