What's the best common card you know?
-
Hmm Ithilien Blade is common and killer, but requires some help
Need to find the best stand alone common
-
Ithilien blade or Mordor fiend.
-
captured by the ring
-
Orc Butcher is one of my favorites... I could easily see it as a rare instead of a common.
-
I luv orc butcher...but aside from that...
-
Sam, Son of Hamfast. He's a companion (at the very least a speedbump), an alternate Ring-bearer, and a burden remover extraordinaire. NOLINKLook at him peeking over his shoulder! Eying Rosie Cotton, or sensing the approach of the X-list?
Other choices:
What Are They? - Once the roaming part is set up, discarding minions in the maneuver phase (regardless of wound/exertion prevention) is plain nasty. Counters are further limited since it's an event.
Goblin Scimitar - Costs (0), draws a card, and gives strength +2 to a very lucky minion. But more than that, it combos with Goblin Scavengers as the gift that keeps on giving, as well as Goblin Armory to flood the twilight pool. In terms of its sheer power in the deck it serves, I think it earns a high spot in the list.
-
Captured by the Ring - than thing is nasty! No deck uses Gollum without CbtR :)
-
Beaten Back, Captured by the Ring
-
Faramir, Son of Denethor. Still awesome.
-
Hobbit Sword.
-
Hobbit Sword.
wins thread.
-
But from which set?
-
Does it matter?
It's so good it's been reprinted 4 times.
-
"Most Useful" and "best" are different. Faramir, Son of Denethor, is best, because its ability is so wicked awesome, not because it sees more play than Hobbit Sword.
-
Obviously not Shadows as its a Starter card in that set

You do not argue with the data! 4 reprint! WINS!
Well, you're right, but...
-
captured by the ring
QFT CBTR FTW
-
CBTR is too specific. Faramir is way more versatile.
But yeah, CBTR rocks massively. Almost as massively as Faramir, and definitely more than Hobbit Sword. ;)
-
Hobbit Sword, hands down. You can't argue with the statistics, it's the most reprinted card, and for quite a while, it was the one single card you could toos in ANY deck without risk of it being a dead draw or not fitting with the strategy, you gotta give it to the Sword!
-
Same with Faramir. :D He's flat out awesome in any deck with room for another comp. As I said, Most Reprinted =/= best.
-
Only reason Hobbit sword was reprinted so much was so it could see play in just about if not all formats. It was reprinted numerous times because it was awesome just a way to pump your ring-bearer a bit and that is needed in every format. Hobbit sword is good but the arguement about it being the best because it was reprinted more than any other card is bull.
-
Yeah, I know.
My honest vote would probably go for Ithilien Blade. It did end up getting Madril X'ed in standard. Although by that argument Mordor Fiend is the best... it got itself banned...
-
Fiend is definitely the best.
Aldred, Eored Soldier. Makes the horn deck work.

be quiet you ;)

Yup. It was sometimes starter rarity, but who cares, so was Hobbit Sword. F_M, you seriously can't beat the Ruling Ring is was reprinted WAY more times that Hobbit Sword and could be tossed in ANY deck, including ones that ran ARBs and NO Hobbits WHATSOEVER.
Hats off to the Ruling Ring.

Some other good candidates:
Quickbeam, Bregalad (simply awesome)
Librarian, Keeper of Ancient Texts (name me another race than [Gandalf] Man that gets THAT much better with one common card...there aren't any)
Gimli, Eager Hunter (where else can you get such an easy [2]-cost 9/3 companion?)
Aragorn, Heir of Elendil (awesome sacrificial lamb with no cultural enforcement and no questions asked)
Faramir, Prince of Ithilien (a potential [1]-cost 7/3/7 companion with easy defender +1? Yes, please!)
Home and Hearth (key to so many decks these days)
Forth The Three Hunters! (all THAT one one common card?!)
Elven Bow (for rather obvious reasons)
Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom (hey, I had to toss one of MY favorites in here :P)
Fireworks (REALLY wishing this was Standard-legal)
The Terror of His Coming (entire decks are built around this card)
Bounder (oldie but a goodie)
Pavise (um...yeah, rather obvious here)
Host of Thousands (at least bears mentioning)
Wow, bigger list than I thought, and I could probably list more! :P
Personally, my Top 10 (in no particular order) would probably be:
Hobbit Sword
Captured By The Ring
Faramir, Son of Denethor
Home and Hearth
Elven Bow
Host of Thousands
Forth The Three Hunters!
Pavise
Librarian, Keeper of Ancient Texts
Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom

To specific

Still specific, but he is that good.
Gimli, Eager Hunter (where else can you get such an easy [2]-cost 9/3 companion?)
Yeah...not really candidate for BEST. But still good.
Aragorn, Heir of Elendil (awesome sacrificial lamb with no cultural enforcement and no questions asked)
Nope. Definitely not.
Faramir, Prince of Ithilien (a potential [1]-cost 7/3/7 companion with easy defender +1? Yes, please!)
Please. Son of Denethor SO pwns this one.
Home and Hearth (key to so many decks these days)
Let's just mention No Visitors and Mordor Fiend
Forth The Three Hunters! (all THAT one one common card?!)
WAY too specific.
Elven Bow (for rather obvious reasons)
Yup.
Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom (hey, I had to toss one of MY favorites in here :P)
I know its your pet card, but it really stinks. It really does.
Fireworks (REALLY wishing this was Standard-legal)
Too specific.
The Terror of His Coming (entire decks are built around this card)
Not really.
Bounder (oldie but a goodie)
Ally hate is too big. Allies aren't that good anymore.
Pavise (um...yeah, rather obvious here)
SLM got banned, not that good anymore.
Host of Thousands (at least bears mentioning)
It galls me to say this, as I love the card, but its to specific.
Wow, bigger list than I thought, and I could probably list more! :P

Captured By The Ring
Faramir, Son of Denethor

Librarian, Keeper of Ancient Texts
Nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom
Elven Bow, Faramir or Fiend, IMO.
-
If you want to go with best reprinted card I'd say Elven Bow. Ruling Ring is kinda meh, and Hobbit Sword is nothing compared to Elven Bow.
-
captured by the ring and traveled leader
-
GT has risen from the Necromantic ashes once again!
-
Sam, SOH hands down.
-
well I remember when every deck ran 4 hobbit stealth to deal with the balrog, Bounder saw a lot of play too. or what about the common ring?
-
Filibert Bolger. That guy rocks. But he might be an uncommon, come to think of it.... #-o :-[
-
Black Sails of Umbar and Under Foot are worth mentioning. As are Gimli Counter of Foes, Dwarven Axe, and Swept Away. But, Hobbit Sword would have to be my favorite.
Favorite uncommons would have to be filibert bolger, shadowplay, etc.
-
Filibert Bolger is common.
-
Filibert Bolger is common.
And he rocks. Stealth then Filibert, sorry Balrog. Broken? Well... not in broken open.
Thanks Lurtzy
-
Hobbit Sword +1
-
Hobbit Sword +1
But, Hobbit Sword would have to be my favorite.
Elven Bow pwns Hobbit Sword. End of story!
-
Elven Bow pwns Hobbit Sword. End of story!
Yeah, because THIS is the way to have a discussion. Kids these days...
-
I think he made it clear that our opinions were no longer needed as he declared the winner. I mean elven bow is obviously amazing... ](*,)
-
Lightfootedness >>>> Elven Bow. New winner declared! FIN. :uh-huh:
-
Vile Goblin.
I win. End of story.
-
lol...lightfootedness prevents a wound, elven bow just gives the shadow player a wound. Obviously lightfootedness is more useful.
-
your all wrong the "best" common is 4C42
-
Defend It and Hope was money. Sweet card against Uruks.
-
I`ve given some time thinking about this. (as some of you have). I think Captured by the Ring is the best, because:
- it costs 0
- it gets Gollum from Drawdeck AND Discardpile
- Adds a threat
- And is one of the few common cards I know that makes a complete culture playable.
There are other ways to play gollum of course but this card has been in EVERY gollum deck I`ve played against. Therefore CbtR is my winner.

Best Card Ever.
-
I don't know if it's the best, but it is overused.
-
Most things get overused for a reason. ;)
-
I think the hobbit sword is still the best!
-
captured by the ring
-
That one is useful, but have you ever seen a foiled hobbit sword? It's like gold, it's like printing your own money!
