Title: Starter Deck Random Rares
Post by: TelTura on April 02, 2012, 08:25:25 PM
So I got a lot of a couple thousand cards on eBay for about 30 bucks from a guy who claimed to get it all in a garage sale; didn't know anything about them.  I figured what the hey, at the very least I'll have a lot of fodder...and oh how true that was.  It seems the vast majority of the lot was some poor fool who bought about 21-ish Faramir starter packs and 18-ish Witch King starter packs.  Now, I had considered doing this myself; that's a fair amount of random rares, even if you've got doubles and quintuples of everything you'll never need, but I remember settling for a couple starters back in the day if the boosters were all sold out.  In my case, though, I now am the proud owner of ~18 Gate Troll, Skinbark, Fladrif, and Enraged, and about  ~21 Ancient Roads, Isengard Mechanics, and Don't Look At Them (Not to mention three 0P17).  This seems to entirely ruin the point of having Rare cards at all, at this point it's as "rare" as the premium starter cards.  What sets did this idiotic algorithm apply to, in case I decide to try my luck on a starter box sometime?  I distinctly recall Fellowship, Mines, Realms, and Tower all having random rares, but by Ents it seems to have abandoned that notion.

(I did get Denethor, SotC, Anduril, FotW, Grond, Gothmog, and a few other rares from set 7/8, not to mention one starter from each and some assorted Magic and Star Trek cards that I'll have to investigate, so I don't count my time completely wasted, thought that doesn't necessarily count for my money...)

I'm pretty sure it was just EoF and BoHD that had the set AI rares in each starter deck.

Indeed.  The idea was that new players would get cool rares that worked well in the deck if the rares were fixed, but starter decks sold terribly because most players didn't want these fixed rares in large quantities.  Decipher switched back beginning with RotK

Well, that's good to know.  My starter-buying strat may see the light, then, after all.
