Title: Gemp Images Down - Result Cancellation
Post by: ket_the_jet on August 27, 2012, 03:18:03 PM
MarcinS: Can you cancel the result for this game?

http://www.gempukku.com/gemp-lotr/game.html?gameId=4980

Thanks.

bibfortuna: all the crd images disappeared
chet_manly: Did you refresh the screen?
chet_manly: That's happened to me in the past.
chet_manly: Usually a quick refresh solves it.
bibfortuna: ys. i cant click
chet_manly: Try closing the window and logging back in.
bibfortuna: nope still broken. what happened?
bibfortuna: why arent they showing up?
bibfortuna: i cant click on any cards
chet_manly: I am not sure. Let's give it a minute and you can try refreshing.
bibfortuna: wtf are we supposed to do?
bibfortuna: its not fair that you can win because i dont know what the cards are
chet_manly: Try refreshing now.
chet_manly: I think the server just refreshed. It finally switched to being my action.
bibfortuna: refreshing doesnt work
bibfortuna: wha did you do to cause my images to go away?
chet_manly: Was that you that passed the Gimli skirmish or was that the server updating?
bibfortuna: i passed
chet_manly: Whoa. Let's not jump to conclusions.
chet_manly: First of all, I'm no cheat.
bibfortuna: but how could i know it's the gimli skirmish?
bibfortuna: you oviously did something, because i didnt do anything
chet_manly: This is a known issue on this system.
bibfortuna: not to me
chet_manly: Listen, I know you're an old head on TLHH, but so am I so I don't know where you get off by accusing me of cheating.
bibfortuna: never had this happen before
chet_manly: It's a #$&*@! card game to me and I don't care that much about it.
bibfortuna: im not accusing you of cheating
chet_manly: I just play for fun.
chet_manly: You just did twice.
bibfortuna: its not fun if i cant see the cards
chet_manly: I understand that it isn't fun. I'm trying to be patient and I haven't made a move. The clock is ticking on my end, so there's no harm nor foul if you continue trying to refresh.
bibfortuna: no, i didnt
bibfortuna: are your images working?
chet_manly: Yes.
chet_manly: "wha did you do to cause my images to go away?"
bibfortuna: why?
chet_manly: That sounds pretty accusatory.
chet_manly: Why are my images showing?
chet_manly: I don't know. I have a fine internet connection.
bibfortuna: if your images are working and mine aren't, something must have happened on your end
chet_manly: Why would it have happened on my end?
chet_manly: And not, let's say, the server's end?
bibfortuna: if it was the server's end, both of us would have this problem
bibfortuna: that's how servers work. when something goes wrong on a server, it affects everybody
chet_manly: Not necessarily. Depends on the routing.
bibfortuna: it's all one internet
chet_manly: That's routed through thousands upon thousands of servers.
chet_manly: Facile argument.
chet_manly: It's all one ozone layer, but the hole is over Australia.
chet_manly: Marcin is not online.
bibfortuna: but there's nothing wrong with my end. it was working before, and i didnt do anything to change this
chet_manly: http://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php/topic,7592.msg77785.html#msg77785
chet_manly: There is a link that shows that this is a known issue.
bibfortuna: link doesnt work
chet_manly: Did you scroll all the way through?
bibfortuna: yes
chet_manly: l1no, is MarcinS in the lobby, by chance?
bibfortuna: i C&Ped te entire URL
chet_manly: Search "GEMP images" on TLHH.
bibfortuna: i cant
chet_manly: wilco: Is MarcinS in the lobby, by chance?
chet_manly: You can't...access the internet?
bibfortuna: yes i can. the site doesnt work
Me: http://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php
Me: See, now it sounds like an internet issue *on your end.*
bibfortuna: i already tried that link
System: wilco left the room
bibfortuna: but its not
bibfortuna: im chatting with yo, that means my internet works
bibfortuna: and i can access other sites

For what it is worth, I would have won that game easily and yes, I'll avoid playing Bib in the future.

If my card images aren't showing up but yours are, this proves you did something to cause that. If the image server were down, it would have affected both of us. When a server if up, everybody can access it; when it's down, nobody can. So when one person can access it but another can't, that is very suspicious.

It isn“t problem of server or whatever..it is problem of connection...i have same bugs sometimes too...slow response by interet....ping is high...and that is result....i didnt ever met guy who have this bug in same game as me. So it is not fair to tell some1 he is hacker.

Bib, think who you are accusing here. You are actually giving Ket credit of being able to hack computers?* :P

*Just kidding Ket. Seemed to good to pass up :)

So explain how he was able to see the card images but I couldn't. The images were loading just fine for me before that; I believe we were in the middle of a skirmish between Gimli SOG and a Goblin Scrabbler when the images suddenly went down. The only other explanation I can think of is there is some sort of bug with one of those two cards that only affects the FP.

Did you try running a trace route?  You're not entirely right when you said "that's how servers work. when something goes wrong on a server, it affects everybody"; as chet said, it depends on the routing.  As an example, my connection to TLHH hits about 17 routers before it gets to the proper server.  If one of those goes down, that could take TLHH down for me and not for other people.

Ket doesn't cheat, Bib.  He runs his mouth, whines, complains, and generally spends a lot of time bitching, but he doesn't cheat.

The site was messed up for a lot of the afternoon, a lot of us were having similar problems. Frankly, there wouldn't be any point in hacking the site anyway, I mean...what's the reward? Who cheats to win an online children's card game worth fantasy gold?

Other possible explanations:
1. There could be a proxy server between you and the WAN with caching of images enabled.  IYour computer would only be reaching out to that server instead of to the actual web server to download the images.  If the cache was corrupted, you could lose the images but the server might think you were still getting them and not let you out into the WAN.
2.  There's an IDS/IPS between your computer and the web server that updated its signatures and started generating false positives on the image files.

If my card images aren't showing up but yours are, this proves you did something to cause that.

Whoa, ok guys, that's enough. It has been shown this is a KNOWN ISSUE with Gemp, and that it USUALLY only affects a single person when it happens, so let's move along. I removed ket's inflamed post below (sorry ket, editting that wouldn't cut it, I'd have to remove the whole text anyway), and I'm giving you guys a "verbal warning" (without actually using the warning system for now), so let's hope Marcin can clear up what might be bib's problem so he can play again.

I believe it's not really a problem of the website (gemp-lotr) itself. As already explained by bibfortuna25, he was unable to access the lotrtcgdb.com (TLHH) website at all, which eliminates the application as having anything to do with that. But to reiterate and maybe explain, if you are unable to access lotrtcgdb.com website, you will not be able to see the images, because that's where gemp-lotr points your browser to get the images from.

For what it's worth, I had some problems using Gemp with Explorer, but found that it worked fine on Firefox.
