I'm curious about the quotes at the bottom of the cards. Are they only from the books, or from both the books and the movies?

Decipher was occasionally inconsistent about it, but generally lore worked like this:
If it was surrounded in " " and nothing else, the lore can be sourced to one of the books, and was a line of prose (meaning it wasn't a character speaking). If it was " ' ' " then it was a character speaking in one of the books. Decipher's own writing was never wrapped in quotes. A direct movie quote was usually illustrated by using " ".
Sometimes, however, a quote from the film would be wrapped in " ' ' " to look prettier, I guess. It always bugged me when they didn't adhere to the system!

Here's how it goes:
"'....'" Means it is a character's quote from the novel or movie. See Greenleaf or AWINL for an example.
"...." Means it is a passage from the novel, but not a character's quote. See Glamdring for an example.
No quotation marks at all means it is something Decipher wrote themselves. See Arwen's Fate for an example.

It's funny this came up, because flavor text is actually one of the items I don't know how I'm going to handle in 2E. I guess I'll try to go with Decipher's system.

just choose your quote's carefully. Some of deciphers were horrid! Especially the post shadows stuff

If you play(ed) their Star Wars CCG, the lore from the Dagobah and Cloud City sets were especially terrible.

Whaaaaaaaaaat Bib!? Cloud City had the best lore of any set! #$&*@! was hilarious.

For star wars they didn't have three tomes of literature from which to draw so I would excuse some of the lame stuff they invented. As for as LOTR is concerned, I don't think decipher had a lagit excuse for using lines of lore such as "Some orcs had basic tracking skills." I dont recall which orc culture card had that lore but after reading it, I lost all faith in Deciphers ability to create decent lore.

in cases such as those, the far better option is to print the card without lore.

i whole hearted agree. if you have to use some lame line like the afore mentioned, it is best not to produce one. If you just HAVE to put a lore line on your card come up with a line that at least sounds like it came from a book. instead of "orcs possess some tracking skills." try "The orc hunched over the imprint in the mud. He examined it with practised eyes." it conveys the same message in a much more agreeable fashion. Trust me on this, I've been a writer for 20 years

To be honest, I have never cared about lore... but seeing that so many of you seems to really care about it, I'll have to improve my stuff if I order to make good DCs.

To your knowledge, how would they skip a passage when quoting it?
For example...
FULL QUOTE
"'It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest...fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.'"
OPTION 1
"'It began with the forging of the Great Rings. [...] Seven to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.'"
OPTION 2
"'It began with the forging of the Great Rings... Seven to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.'"
OPTION 3
"'It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Seven to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.'"

Decipher went with Option 2 for that scenario. Let me see if I can find you an example.
Ah, here we go. Celeborn, Lord of Lorien:
"“They were clad wholly in white … and the hair of the Lord Celeborn was of silver long and bright; but no sign of age was upon them, unless it were in the depths of their eyes; for these were keen as lances in the starlight, and yet profound..."
The actual quote from the book:
They were clad wholly in white; and the hair of the Lady was of deep gold, and the hair of the Lord Celeborn was of silver long and bright; but no sign of age was upon them, unless it were in the depths of their eyes; for these were keen as lances in the starlight, and yet profound, the wells of deep memory.
