Title: Anti Son of Hamfast strategies
Post by: neopium on May 22, 2013, 07:40:15 AM
Hi everyone,

I have a [sauron]/[gollum] corruption deck that works pretty well... except when Sam, Son of Hamfast is there.

What are good card to get rid of him?

Orc Assassin only works if there is another Hobbit to spot, which is not always the case in Movie Block.

Ideas?

I would say lots of Hate. If Sam's taking the burdens off, he's going to have some wounds on him. Finish him off with Hate and your Sauron orcs!

The problem with Hate and Helpless is Sam's already done his deed by the time you can get to him.  On Gemp, everyone I've ever played against just kills him off after the three exertions anyway.  Unless there's a way to keep him from being played (which I'm pretty sure there isn't), you are kind of out of luck.  If he actually is sitting on the table for some time, those really are your best options, I'd think.

Sam removing 3 burdens certainly does not simplify the task of my deck, but the real problem is when is is healed and removes more.

So I guess Hate is a good option (the is also Enquea Shotgun that can help). Helpless is great, but you have to spot frodo as well... and play Nazguls...

To echo Zurcamos's point, he essentially gives you +3 starting bid and a Thrarin, at the cost of a few extra twilight for moving, and the opportunity cost of having another [2] companion in your starting fellowship.

One possibility vs. the "suicide Sam" is to take advantage of there being a card in the dead pile. Here are some cards that use that mechanic — none of them seem super-useful to a Sauron/Gollum corruption deck, but maybe you'll find something.

Movie
Orc Butchery
Despair
Sauron's Defenses
Driven Back
Beyond All Hope
Field of the Fallen
Put Forth His Strength
Uruk Fanatic

Expanded
Suppressing Uruk
Uruk Outrider
Orkish Headsman (edit, cannot believe that's spelled that way ... )
Houses of Lamentation

My burden deck uses Sauron/Gollum/Ringwraith so my plan to deal with him is always the Bill Ferny, Swarthy Sneering Fellow (2R75) or Gollum, Mad Thing (10R21) assassination. Aside from that and the other mentioned you could use You Bring Great Evil (1C283), Called (7U174) with Plotting (7R67), Small Hope (7R159) or Fierce in Despair (7R148) as long as he isn't the ringbearer (which makes him pretty unstoppable). I hate that motherfucker. Good luck!

You do realize many of these cards are useless because they slap him down, then kill him.

do you have a better suggestion?

Sadly there is no way to prevent the 3 burdens being removed (I have a burden intensive shadow in Fellowship block that would be so much more deadly if SoH wasn't around).  Goblin Domain (not that I've ever seen it used) was the only way in Fellowship Block, or get a Black Breath on Frodo to prevent the loss of the burdens.  But using Hate or Enquea (since he is likely to become the 6th companion) are really your only options.  By then the 3 burdens have gone, though.  Helpless is also vulnerable to condition discard, so really cannot be relied upon.

I still say the best thing is to just Hate him to death.

Hmmm... trying to think... there are several cards that cause companions to come into play exhausted, aren't there? That could help for the "slap him down and kill him" scenario.
