Hi all,
Simple question: is it implicitly true for shadow spells that you must be able to spot Saruman to play them?

No, you do not.

No. All cards do what they say, so if a card does not say you need Saruman, then you don't need him. Saruman's Snows, for example, tells you exactly what you need to be able to play it. Saruman can certainly be that Isengard minion if you wish, but you could also use any other minion from that culture.
When in doubt, do exactly what the card says.
