Title: The Lore of the Rings - V2 (DC Contest)
Post by: Elf_Lvr on October 11, 2008, 09:41:26 AM
Hey guys! I hope some of you old CC folk remember my contest, "The Lore of the Rings." Well, it's up again for another round.

For those of you who are new to this, or just don't remember, here's how the contest will operate:
-I will give you a lore taken directly from the books/movies, and you make any sort of DC you want that uses that lore.
-The card has to "fit" the lore as much as possible.
-You then PM me the card by a designated date, and on that date I post the cards for voting.
-CONTESTANTS ARE REQUIRED TO VOTE. (Not for themselves).
-Others are encouraged to vote and will get  :gp: for it.
-The rounds will be single elimination. The person with the least votes is out.

Of course, what would a DC contest be without prizes? Prizes will depend on how many contestants show up. Assuming we have enough for first, second, and third place, though, prizes will be as follows:

FIRST - One Rare FOIL card, two C/U FOILs
SECOND - One Rare FOIL
THIRD - Two C/U FOILs

Not GREAT, I know, but honestly I only have so much collection left.

So, how do you join? Just post here saying you want to participate by Monday, October 13. Generally  :gp: is given to a host of a contest, but not required. Not like it really does anything for me anyway, except for a warm fuzzy feeling only gold can give.

I KNOW there's a lot of you out there. And I'm not above PMing every last one of you to get you to join. So get it over with. You know you want to.

I'll play, but my internet situation is sketchy at best; it's liable to go out the window again any day (which means I'd have to bum off my parents).

I vouch for him. He's in!

But if that's not enough, he said THIS to ME:

I'll try, but things have been absolutely nuts for me lately. I'm behind on Realms of Middle-earth, my DCs, and am STILL trying to get my own contest going again.

But I'm in. Just no guarantees at this resulting in some of my best work.

Okay, guys, I think its high time we began! Let's look at our contestants:

-drum roll-

The Master of Twilight, Menace64!

The Fiendish Guardian of Mordor, Gate Troll!

The Esteemed King of the Woodland Realm, Thranduil!

The Protector of Truth and Justice, GarrisonofGondor!

The Shameless Overlord of Spam, sickofpalantirs!

The Slayer-of-Boromir, Mr. Lurtzy!

The Sour Spawn of Britain, lem0nhead!

The Agent of the Law, NappyKorn!

And, of course, our Metal-Soled King Under the Mountain, DainIronfoot!

Everybody take a bow!  =D>

Anyways, long-winded introductions aside, I've come bearing your first challenge, and it's one you old CC vets should recognize. It's one of my favorite quotes in the entire trilogy, and it was also a part of the previous Lore of the Rings contest. There's no way to start something new like starting it with something old. So, heeeeeeeeeeeeere's your lore!

"'But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

HOLY EPIC BACKSTORY!  :P

Yeah, you don't have to use all of that. You may trim it as you will but the last sentence is required.

The phrase is from Gandalf's confrontation with Denethor just after he arrives in Minas Tirith. For those who couldn't guess, Gandalf is the one speaking.

Alright. PM me your entry by... say, this Sunday. That's plenty of time, don't you agree?

Now get creating! Hyah!

:o Is it? Unless I do it now (which is a little unlikely because it's late in England) I won't be able to get it in on time!

EDIT: That said, I think I just did it now!

Post by: Elf_Lvr on October 24, 2008, 05:18:45 AM
Well, it looks like we have our first no-show.  ](*,)

That changes the rules of the game a bit. Since he didn't submit his card, NK is disqualified. True, I didn't set a specific deadline, but I had hoped that he would have got it in ASAP, and I did PM him, so I guess we can assume it's not coming.

However, we're still gonna post the cards and vote on them. I may decide to eliminate a second member this round. Oooh! Plot twist!

Anyways, here are the cards!

Quote from: #1
[4] •Gandalf, Steward [Gandalf]
 Companion • Wizard
 Strength: 9
 Vitality: 4
 Resistance: 7
While you can spot Denethor, Gandalf is Strength -3.
Gandalf is strength +1 for each [Gondor] Man you can spot. (Except Denethor)(Limit +4)
"For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

Quote from: #2
[4] •Gandalf, Steward of Middle-Earth [Gandalf]
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 7
Knight. Defender +1. Fellowship:  Gandalf may be spotted as a member of the [gondor] culture.
Response: Each time a companion heals you may add [2] and exert Gandalf to remove a burden.
"'But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

Quote from: #3
[4] •Gandalf, Hope of Middle Earth [gandalf]
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 8
Each unwounded companion is strength +1.
Fellowship or Manuever: Exert Gandalf three times to make another companion gain defender +1.
Regroup: Discard Gandalf to heal every companion twice.
"'But all worthy things that are in !peril as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

Quote from: #4
[4] •Gandalf, Steward of Middle Earth [Gandalf]
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 7
Defender +1.
Response: If a Free Peoples card with twilight cost X is about to be discarded by an opponent, add X and exert Gandalf to take that card into hand instead.
"And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

Quote from: #5
[4] •Gandalf, Grey Wanderer [Gandalf]
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 8
Vitality: 4
Signet: Aragorn
While you can spot 3 [Gondor] knights (or Denethor), Gandalf is also a [Gondor] companion.
Each time you lose initiative, you may exert Gandalf to heal another [Gondor] companion (twice if Gandalf is a [Gondor] companion) or liberate a site.
“‘But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care....For I also am a steward. Did you not know?’”

Quote from: #6
[4] •Gandalf, Steward of Minas Tirith [gondor]
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 7
To play, spot two [gondor] knights (or exert a [gondor] man).
Skirmish: Exert Gandalf to make a [gondor] knight strength +x, where X is the number of fortifications you can spot (limit +4). Then, if you can spot X knights, you may shuffle a [gandalf] or [gondor] event from your discard pile into your draw deck.
"For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

Quote from: #7
[2] Call of Stewardship [Gandalf]
Event • Response
If a Shadow event is played, exert Gandalf to cancel it. That event's owner may remove 2 burdens or 2 threats to prevent this.
"'But all worthy things that are in NOLINKperil as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

Quote from: #8
[3] •My Task [Gandalf]
Condition • Support Area
At the start of each turn, you may exert Gandalf to add a [Gandalf] token here.
Each time Gandalf wins a skirmish, you may exert him to add a [Gandalf] token here.
Regroup: Spot Gandalf and 8 tokens here to choose one: heal each companion; remove 5 threats; remove 3 burdens; or discard each Shadow condition. Remove this condition from the game.
"'But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

And so voting begins. Vote for your favorite three, in order. First will receive 3 points, second 2 points, third 1 point. The person with the lowest points this round will be eliminated. However, points don't carry over to the next round, unlike my last contest.

Contestants are reminded that they are required to vote. Not for yourself. I will know.

Some cards came to me without culture, or uniqueness (on companions!), or other things like that. Please proof your cards before sending.

I also made a few format changes to all of them (i.e. bold card titles, ":" after strength and vitality, "•" used to show uniqueness, etc.). This is to prevent people from guessing whose card is whose (although it may not be that difficult anyway). In the future, try and format stuff the same way, but I'll still be looking over the card formatting before posting 'em.

I also didn't include author's notes, for the same reason. If you want me to include those too, just go ahead and say so and I probably will. Because of that, I encourage you to read the cards thoroughly before voting. Note, for example, that some Gandalfs have the [gondor] culture.

I'll end the voting on Tuesday, October 28. Unless anyone needs more time to vote, which you probably shouldn't unless you just don't have access to a computer. I'm gonna be gone all weekend (it's my fall break) so don't worry if you don't hear from me for a while.

Happy Hunting!

1) 4 - I love how it accurately represents Gandalf protecting all things! Defender is a nice touch as well.
2) 7 - Again ties in nicely with the lore, though it would have to be a bit cheaper for me to use it in a deck, I think.
3) 6 - I love cross-culture and all support for knights, so this one immediately got my approval (though his recursion ability doesn't quite make sense the way it's currently written; I'm assuming there's an error somewhere and the last "X" is either supposed to be a particular number or it works on events of twilight "X or less").

There are fun cards, here! The number of Gandalfs is beginning to hurt my eye, though... @-/

A bit vanilla and he gets too big IMO. 13 strength most of the time since everybody would run this on an all gondor deck. He's almost as big as Elendil, Gil-Galad and Durin III with their gear, and for only 4 twilight. Besides, he has all the condition discarding and burden removal. Too overpowered IMO.

Bad wording, mate. First sentence should be "Gandalf may be spotted as a [gondor] companion.". The burden removal is a bit crazy too with all the healing gondor usually packs. It's a defender +1 knight companion with solid burden removal. Overpowered too IMO.

Personally don't like event canceling. Just doesn't match the LOTR TCG gameplay as a whole, it's very unusual.

Quote from: #8

For I also am a steward. Did you not know?'"

Don't like the way you add tokens to it. If you have to exert, turns out that doesn't really matter if it's once per turn, or each time he wins... you'll be limited to 3 tokens until you heal him, period. This just makes it more complicated and cluttered IMO. You could just have chosen one way to add tokens. The benefits are interesting, but 8 tokens would most likely be there only by site 7 (that is if he doesn't take any wounds) and could be too late, not mentioning Gandalf would be an easy target, exhausted most of the time. Then if you pack stuff to reinforce tokens, you could lose card efficiency and packing the usual burden removal / condition discarding would be easier.

My votes are:

Well, now I'M the one who's been slacking off in getting this contest moving.  >:(

BAD EL!  ](*,)

Uh, anyways, I'll exempt Dain from voting this round (for obvious reasons) though I'm not sure if he'll still want to / be able to participate. We'll see, I suppose.

Anyways, results were like this:

GarrisonofGondor (#1):1
Gate Troll (#2): 0
Mr. Lurtzy (#3):9
lem0nhead (#4): 9
DainIronfoot (#5):3
sickofpalantirs (#6):8
Menace64 (#7):5
Thranduil (#8):13

So, congratulations to Thran! :gp: for the victor of the round.

Since we had a no-show, NK was eliminated this round.

I'd hate to trouble you all so much for voting and then say it doesn't matter. We've got a double elimination this round, then, I suppose. Sorry, Gate Troll.

I'll post the next lore later on today.

Alright, guys. Here's your next lore.

"But this I will say to you: your Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all."

Galadriel speaking to the company. I think you all probably remember this moment.

Bonus points to anyone who uses this lore, too!

`Look, my friends!' he called. `Here's a pretty hobbit-skin to wrap an elven-princeling in! If it were known that hobbits had such NOLINKhides, all the hunters of Middle-earth would be riding to the Shire.'

Deadline: Next Sunday, Nov. 16. Unless anyone has a reasonable objection.

It's just after Frodo is stabbed by a big spear and doesn't get hurt. Aragorn says it when he sees the Mithril-Coat. :uh-huh:

That's fine, Dain. I would rather still like to have you in the contest. I DO actually have everyone else's cards, so it looks like we can get the ball rolling again tomorrow.

Then I'll try and get it in today to avoid holding things up. Just means I'll likely have to hold off posting my own DCs until then as well...which I might have done anyway.

Oh, and more Realms stuff soon, too. I promise! I was getting close to posting more before my daughter decided she'd waited long enough and came early. :P

But first, this contest. I'll see what I can do real quick-like.

I ended up being extremely busy yesterday, so I didn't have the opportunity to put anything up. Without further ado, here are your cards!

Quote from: #1
[2] Sorrow and Much Toil [Sauron]
Condition
Resistance: -2
To play, exert a [Sauron] or [Orc] minion. Bearer must be an unbound companion. Limit 1 per bearer.
While bearer has resistance 0, the Free Peoples player may not assign [Sauron] or [Orc] minions to bearer.
When you cannot spot a burden, discard this condition.
“‘...your Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all.’”

Quote from: #2
[3] •Upon The Edge Of A Knife [Sauron]
Condition
Bearer must be a companion.
At the start of the maneuver phase, remove a threat to transfer this condition to a companion.
While bearer is exhausted, bearer may not be assigned to skirmish.
"But this I will say to you: your Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all."

Quote from: #3
[2] •True Company [Shire]
 Condition
 Resistance:+2
 Bearer must be Frodo.
While you can spot another companion with Fellowship, Frodo is strength +1.
"But this I will say to you: your Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains, while the company is true."

Quote from: #4
[1] The Insight of Galadriel [Elven]
Condition
To play, spot an Elf. Bearer must be a companion. Limit 1 per bearer.
While bearer has resistance 4 or more, bearer is strength +1 and gains muster.
While bearer has resistance 3 or less, bearer is strength -2.
"'But this I will say to you: your Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all.'"

Quote from: #5
[1] Dangerous Quest [Shire]
Condition • Support Area
To play, spot a [Shire] Ring-bearer.
Each time the fellowship moves from a site with Shadow number 1 or less, discard a condition.
Each time the fellowship moves from a site with Shadow number 2 or more, wound a character.
'"But this I will say to you: your Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all."'

Quote from: #6
[1] • Hope Remains [Elven]
Condition • Support Area
When you play this condition, spot all companions in the fellowship. Each companion spotted in this way is strength +1 and resistance +1.
If one of the spotted companions is discarded or killed, discard this condition.
"But this I will say to you: your quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all."

Quote from: #7
[2] •Edge of a knife [Wraith]
Condition • Support area
To play, Spot 2 [wraith] minions.
Each time the fellowship moves to a site with a shadow number of (0), add a burden.
Each time the fellowships moves to a site with a shadow number of [3], the free peoples player must exert a companion.
"But this I will say to you: your Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all."

Same voting rules as last time. CONTESTANTS MUST VOTE. I'd like to be able to start the next challenge in a week.

I really like both #4 and #7 and it took awhile before I decide to put #4 first.
I didn't like any of the others very much except #1 which seemed okay but a bit complicated.
So, without further ado:

Awesome: 4
Cool: 7
Neat:1

Now, I also think we can exclude Dain from voting. I doubt any of you would mind.

So, with that, here's the points:

#1 Dain Ironfoot: 9
#2 Anonymous Prodigy: 1
#3 GarrisonofGondor: 6
#4 Menace64: 15
#5 Thranduil:3
#6: lem0nhead: 8
#7: sickofpalantirs: 6

Sorry, AP. Looks like you're out this round. Congrats to Menace, the overwhelming victor.  :gp:

Here's the next lore for you guys. I really wanted to use something the Witch-King said to Gandalf at Minas-Tirith, but while I was looking for that particular passage, I found this little beauty:

Thrice he cried. Thrice the great ram boomed. And suddenly upon the last stroke the Gate of Gondor broke. As if stricken by some blasting spell it burst asunder: there was a flash of searing lightning, and the doors tumbled in riven fragments to the ground.

Basically, the Witch-King cries and Grond smashes the Gate of Minas Tirith. Pretty neato, if you ask me. Feel free to trim the lore a bit if you want.

Deadline is next Wednesday.

I like this one. I do, I do. I like the way it conveys the scene to an event.  It could be Maneuver phase but it seems good as-is. :P

Quote from: #2

That seems a little broken. Not to mention a bit boring. Maybe should have mentioned Grond instead of the Witch-King. :-|

[1] Rend Both Heart and Stone [Wraith]

Too cheap. Too flavor-less. Too broken. >:(:down:

I like that one. A lot. Very similar to #2 but is a little more balanced and adds something fun. ;D :up:

Muahahahahahahahaha! I love this card! Grond and site control seem so right together! :up:

This might actually be UP. It could definitely be cheaper and maybe forgo some exhaustions. That or it could do more damage.
I mean come on. Blowing [5] as well as exhausting two huge expensive minions? For one measily wound or two burdens?
This card sucks. Big time sucks. :-X :down:

Really sorry guys for holding things up for so long. The end of the year is always ridiculously busy for me; added to the normal chaos was the return of my best friend from the Navy and I was trying to spend as much time with him as I could. *and* a coworker quit which made work even more stressful than it usually is.

Blegh. It's 2009 now and all of that crap is behind me. I voted. Be happy!  =D>

Pretty close round, there. Sorry GoG - but you're out this round.

Let's give some :gp: to the lucky Dwarf that won this round, too! Congrats, Dain!

Anyways, your next lore is a little more up to you to choose - I'd like you to pick part of this section of RotK:

From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a tremor ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was now bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster than the winds, the Nazgûl the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom.

I can see a few different cards in that one. Just cut it up appropriately.
