Title: Boromir, Possibly OP?
Post by: SGollum on June 05, 2020, 03:45:06 PM
So does playing Armor on Boromir, Bearer of Council let him take just 1 wound as a penalty and no more for the rest of the skirmish? Am I reading the rules right? I'm not aware what Gemp does but that does not change anything.

Oh wait, you have to add 3 burdens since you can't pay the cost. Leaving this thread up for future players.

You solved your own question. You would have to pay the three burden cost if Boromir was the Ring-Bearer. It's a dangerous game.

Interesting. So having Armor on him almost becomes a disadvantage.

You are almost giving your ring-bearer an instant corruption clause if you put Armor on Boromir. Footman's Armor or Coat of Mail are better options if you need to throw something on him in Movie Block.

Honestly, all the alternate RB seem to stink. I mean, sure they're strong, but it doesn't matter if they're going to kill themselves. BoC could be strength 45, but it can still only skirmish like 4 times.

The benefit to most of then is that they enable full mono decks that can use the same cards for the RB as are used for the main fellowship. A [gondor] knight deck packing Isildur doesn't have to include 4-5 random hobbit cards for an emergency Frodo save.

Really tho they're hampered somewhat by the fact that the game is about protecting a vulnerable RB, and decipher was unwilling to make them physically weak, so they had to take a different path to vulnerability.

I just rejoined the game after a 10 year hiatus but i think you are forgetting that armor came out prior to any man wearing the ring. It specifically says wound so I wouldn't say it forces you to then take burdens unless you choose to take burdens via ring text then you just add 3 instead of that wound. And I believe its per skirmish  not the entire phase. So unless you are fighting Fierce minions you can only take 1.

Note: If he is the ring bearer the text does say at the "Start" of each skirmish so he takes 2 wounds or 3 burdens then he has to begin his skirmish in which he can take no more than 1 wound at the end of each skirmish resolution. I believe Boromir's text comes before the skirmish itself and the armor does not affect that text.

my opinion of course

It's a common misconception, there's just one rule that stands in the way:

Quote from: Comprehensives Rules 4.0
If the effect of a card or special ability requires you to choose one of two different actions, you must choose an action that you are fully capable of performing (if possible).

Since you are never able to add 2 wounds because of Armor but you're always able to add more burdens, you don't have any choice in the matter. A related misconception is that you have to take either 2 wounds or 3 burdens. You only have to be capable of taking them -- preventing the wounds via Sapling of the White Tree or something similar is fine.
