Title: Dwarves And Nazgul
Post by: JamesCB on January 20, 2021, 07:19:53 AM
I just wanted to do a normal, standard, and (hopefully) good deck, and here are the results.

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Courteous Halfling
Ring: The One Ring, Answer To All Riddles

Adventure deck:
Dunharrow Plateau
West Road
Beacon of Minas Tirith
Anduin Banks*
Pelennor Flat*
Minas Tirith First Circle
Pelennor Grassland
Morgulduin
Slag Mounds*

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
2x Fror, Gimli's Kinsman
1x Gimli, Son of Gloin
1x Gloin, Friend to Thorin
3x Gandalf, The White Wizard
2x Book of Mazarbul
3x Dwarven Armor
2x Dwarven Axe
3x Dwarven Bracers*
3x Gimli's Battle Axe, Trusted Weapon
3x Hand Axe
2x Battle Fury
4x Flurry of Blows
3x Endurance of Dwarves

Shadow Draw Deck:
3x Gorbag, Lieutenant of Cirith Ungol
3x Morgul Detachment
4x Morgul Regiment
4x The Witch-king, Lord of Angmar
3x Ulaire Attea, Keeper of Dol Guldur
3x Ulaire Cantea, Lieutenant of Dol Guldur
4x Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul
4x Ulaire Nelya, Ringwraith in Twilight
4x All Veils Removed

Neither side are unique or special, just Nazgul/ [wraith] Orcs on the one side and Dwarves on the other.

As a deck in general, there are a few problems that stand out. Flurry of Blows is your only way to generate twilight for Gandalf, did you mean Defender of the West? Either way, Gandalf is a very expensive splash when you're not taking advantage of the cards he can use. There might be a better companion for the job instead. Book of Mazarbul unfortunately will only draw cards in Fellowship block -- it's confusing at first, but unless a card says "Any site X" (see Anduril, Flame of the West) then no site symbol means Fellowship block. It's a tale for Gloin, but since you have Endurance of Dwarves and not Sleep, Caradhras you're clearly not against using conditions so you'll be better off with another tale instead. Farin isn't necessarily a great companion, but you're probably going to come up against Orcs more often than Uruks in KS and you need some brave volunteers to go up against The Witch King after Gimli is exhausted.

Your Shadow side is incredibly twilight hungry -- your only card costing less than [5] is a skirmish event! You're going to be able to play 1-2 Shadow cards most turns if you're lucky, and without anything to discard cards from hand I suspect by site 5 your Free Peoples are going to be on their last leg after not drawing much 3 sites in a row. You have so many unique minions that the odds of you having 2 or 3 of the same guy in your hand skyrocket, which is just going to make the hand clog worse and drastically reduce the number of choices you can make -- with 3x Lord of Angmar, 2x Lieutenant of Dol Guldur, and 20 twilight (which should give your 5-card Shadow hand a lot of freedom!) on the table, you can play just two cards.

There are other suggestions I could make, but really what you have here is a nice pile of cards -- neither side seems to have any direction. If this worked perfectly every game, what would it be doing? Once you have a goal in mind you can shape the pile of cards into a real deck. Until then, if something goes wrong how would you know where to improve?
