Title: Reflections Non-9R foil distribution?
Post by: 5tein on February 07, 2022, 04:04:25 PM
Friends, I had the pleasure of opening a handful of Reflections packs this last week. One of the packs was 94% foils.

Excluding the regular foreign card, all of the cards were foils: the 2 Reflections 9R foil cards (Seeing Stone of Orthanc + Freca) plus an even mix of 5 rare foils, 5 uncommon foils, and 5 common foils.

It's been a long time, but I seem to remember the occasional Reflections "super pack" back in the day. Does anyone know how common these were?

I'm also curious what the distribution of non-9R foils is in Reflections. 3/4 of the other packs I opened had just one additional non-9R foil. It made me wonder if I'd gotten lucky with the 3 other packs which had a foil or perhaps unlucky with the 4th that had none?

Finally, what sets were represented in foil distributions in Reflections?

There existed so-called god packs, (almost) full-foiled packs.. Don't ask me the odds but they were quite rare. I openened plent R2 but only had 2 godpacks.

Reflections (and Draft Packs for that matter) were basically a way for Decipher to dump excess product, which means that all cards (presumably foils included) were from sets that they overprinted and were trying to push out of the warehouse.  This means that it's notable what you won't find, such as Battle of Helm's Deep or Siege of Gondor, as those sets were underprinted and snapped up.

As far as I know Siege of Gondor never appeared in Reflections (along with the rest of King block) because it was still able to be ordered. SoG released a few months before Reflections. The first print runs were mostly FOTR stuff while the later print runs were more focused on TT block.

I opened a few boxes of reflections back in the day. From what I could work out:

The non-set 9 cards came from sets 1 to 6. However, the only set 5 cards all came from the starter boxes (fixed rares included). None of the ones I picked up were foil, perhaps as they wouldn't be in a starter deck.

The foreign language card could be foil. I have a lovely 'Arco Lungo Dal Naith' (Naith Longbow).

Thanks for this info. To clarify:

1. Is there any consistency to non-9 foils in Reflections packs? My experience suggests no.
2. Is there any consistency to non-9 regular Rs in Reflections packs? My experience suggests that each Pack contains at least one R.

In other words, if I bought a box of Reflections (ha!) how many non-9 Rares and foils could I expect?

Related: If both Draft Packs and Reflections were based on excess product, why do Draft Packs never contain foils but Reflections packs do? (I don’t know this definitively but I’ve played scores of drafts and never saw a foil in a DP).

From what I remember: draft packs were a fixed starter package to combine with a booster draft mechanism. The only randomization as far as I know was the theme. It made sure you had some companions, a frodo and a ring and some basic gear.
