Title: My newest project. (Set 20)
Post by: Crainiac (The set 20 project) on July 20, 2022, 05:09:28 PM
What do you guys think about a whole new set for the lotr tcg? The unmade set 20, the idea is that I would create a new set for fellowship block, consisting of all new cards. Please leave feedback in the comments, I'd really like to make this project but I won't if nobody is interested. Thanks  :)

Here are a few examples of the set 20 cards.
The first one is a Gollum card, based off of the scene in the mines of moria, when Gollum first shows up.

New sets is a cool thing, the PC released one last Christmas and we're working on a second one on Discord (perhaps you would like joining and seeing the discussion). The Gollum is a cool idea, but way too strong. The first ability needs a limit, and he skirmishes too easily. Other than that, it's a neat idea.

thanks, I'm currently not on discord but I really would love to help with making a new set. I'm gonna fix the gollum card, and I'm working on a few isengard conditions currently.

I think it would be awesome to see a whole new set of cards, I love seeing what people make when they have any possibilities.

thanks! I'm really excited to start with this project. What cards would you like to see in set 20?

I'm pretty interested in anything, really, but I'm especially curious to see what happens with the [Moria] and [Wraith] cultures.

cool, I've been planning out the  [Isengard] culture, but the next one I'll do will be  [Moria].

Alright, I'm going to need some help. I'm making the  [Isengard] culture cards right now, but I was curious, how many cards should be in each culture. The cards are supposed to work with all Fellowship Block cards.

To know how many cards should be in each culture I would decide how many cards you want in the set and then just give each one roughly the same amount. (Giving more cards to the culture you'd like to focus on more, like Two Towers has a crap ton of [Isengard] cards.)

I was thinking about 20 cards per culture, what do you think?

That puts you at (I think) ~180 cards (plus sites and the ring, if you're doing that), so if you're up for it - go ahead! :)

Yeah, idk about sites and a ring but that might be cool. Maybe an Uncommon ring of power would be cool.

Alright, it's time. The first set 20 card is complete! This is the ringbearer card, Frodo, Unsung Hero. I would like to give credit to Teltura/Ketura for providing me with the image and helping me every five minutes when I had a new problem.

The second card is also done! well, technically it's the 3rd card in the set but whatever. This card was probably the most difficult to make considering the fact that the template for modifier cards was being finicky.

He seems cool, just powerful. A limit of some sort would make him great.

Bilbo's Study is super cool, I like the addition to tales for FOTR.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm not sure what to do about the Frodo card, I do agree that it is rather op. I personally don't play with allies that much so I may have underestimated how much use I would get out of it. I also will be adding (hopefully) more tales to the set.

You could change his text to "At the start of the fellowship phase, spot a [Shire] ally to play an [Elven] or [Shire] tale from your deck.

Yeah, that could work. I'll add that option to the poll and see what people want the most. Thank you very much for the feedback.

The poll is open! You can now vote on what game text you want for the Frodo, Unsung Hero card. The voting closes on August 1st 2022, make sure to vote soon.

Alright, the next card is here! He's a  [Shire] character from the books kind of like Old Noakes. The character is... Fatty Bolger! I know that there is already a card for him in set 18 but I like this version better. Keep in mind that this is not a final card, I will make edits that make sense. If there is something wrong with the card, please let me know in the comments and I will fix it.

I like him. He's not that different than Hobbit Party Guest, but draws a card when played, has 1 more vitality, and he doesn't self-heal. Plus he's unique, balancing him further.

Only thing I'm seeing off about the card is instead of Home 1 • Hobbit, he should say Ally • Home 1 • Hobbit. Other than that, it looks awesome!

Alright, I fixed fatty bolger. I made him less like Hobbit Party Guest and I fixed the issue with the card type, Thanks Jamescb.

I've been making a lot of allies for set 20 and I believe that this is the last one. Hobbit Craftsman is useful for finding specific cards in your draw deck. He can also be used to buff hobbit companions/allies.
Here are a few questions that I have about this card:
Is twilight  [2] too much or to little?
Is the card way to overpowered?
Should it be a rare card?
Thanks for the feedback on the rest of the cards for set 20, it's really nice to know what people want to see.

It's a big day for new cards, I created the first event for the  [Shire] culture.
I was also creating some mockups for a custom booster pack that will be released on Wednesday. I hope you guys are enjoying this new set, I've put a lot of work into it. Thanks for the support.

So, first off, it's almost pointless to quibble over rarity.  Rarity is only really a concept for sealed and draft formats in this day and age, and anybody who's gonna use your cards will be doing so in an unlimited constructed format.  If draft becomes a thing, it'll be something you don't have a hope of balancing until you have the entire card base set up, so I would advise just setting rarity aside.

For the fellowship ability, the discount is wholly unnecessary.  You're getting to pull a possession, any possession, for basically free (this is Shire we're talking about, the exertions are gonna get healed away), from either draw or discard. If anything it ought to cost 1 or 2 more, and I would restrict it to just one or the other.

The second ability might work out (assuming that "Regroup" was meant to be "Skirmish").  Just remember that when you discard a weapon, you lose that weapon's strength, so using this on a hobbit sword is in effect a +1, and on a frying pan a +2.  Other possessions would have to justify their inclusion, which admittedly the first ability helps with.

Lastly, consider uploading your card images to a website like https://imgur.com and then embed them here; the attachment model makes them a bit annoying to consume (and that way you can have albums for clusters of cards).

I didn't even realize that I had said regroup, It was supposed to be discard a possession to make a hobbit strength +3 until the regroup phase.

I do realize that his first ability is OP, but so is The Gaffer, and Filibert Bolger, especially when you have Frodo, Old Bilbo's Heir.

This is hugely more Op than either the Gaffer or Filibert. This with stuff like Pipeweed is just completely bonkers, not to mention pulling all sorts of weapons and such to filter the deck.

In general, anything that is recurring pulling of stuff is overpowered. Especially since he can heal so easily with Party Guests, Frodo OBH and your new Fatty Bolger.

I know that I promised a booster pack today, but I've been struggling with fonts so I decided to pitch a new type of booster.
I call them: Site Boosters. The concept is a type of booster that includes a new adventure path for the fellowship, and a random rare. It's a fixed pack like the starter decks. Each pack is for a different type of deck, here's the list.

1. Wraith site booster. Includes: East Road, Weathertop, Ford Of Bruinen, Eregion Hills, The Bridge Of Khazad-Dum, Lothlorien Woods, Anduin Wilderland, Anduin Banks, Emyn Muil + Random Rare

2. Isengard. Site Booster. Includes: East Road, Midgewater Moors, House Of Elrond, Hollin, The Bridge Of Khazad-Dum, Lothlorien Woods, Anduin Wilderland, Anduin Banks, Slopes Of Amon Hen +Random Rare.

3. Moria. Includes: East Road, Breeland Forest, House Of Elrond, Great Chasm, The Bridge Of Khazad-Dum, Dimrill Dale, Anduin Confluence, Brown Lands, Emyn Muil +Random Rare.

I will post later this week on the Free Peoples Site Boosters.

What is the purpose of packs?

Essentially it's used to expand site paths and rare collections.

I think you want too much and do too many things at the same time. I'd focus first on cards, as printing and packaging essentially don't matter in this game.
