Title: Free People Cycle
Post by: TheJord on November 17, 2008, 05:26:35 PM
I cant bring myself to play the Horn deck, so I need a good cycling FP deck. Lets try it out!

2x *Gondorian Merchant(7R97)
1x *Aragorn, Strider(11R54)
1x *Arwen, Royal Maiden(19P6)
3x *Gandalf, Manager of Wizards(7R37)
2x *Gil-Galad, High King of the Noldor(18R12)
2x *Isildur, Heir of Elendil(13U71)
1x *Pippin, Wearer of Black and Silver(7R324)
2x *Brooding On Tomorrow(10U15)
2x *Glimpse of Fate(10U12)
2x *Hardy Garrison(10U33)
3x Home and Hearth(12C122)
3x Into the West(7C23)
4x Still Needed(7C29)
1x *Dinendal, Mirkwood Archer(15R12)
3x *Woodhall Elf(18C17)
2x *Aragorn's Bow, Ranger's Longbow(15R56)

Ok lets see. Use Woodhall Elf to draw 3, Arwen to reconcile allowing you to discard out junk, Gandalf to keep everyone alive and do some removal via GoF and BoT, and Gil-Galad if you lose your Still Needed. Into The West resets threats added by Arwen, Isildur helps keep up the cycling by drawing an extra card every time you reconcile, which will be usually twice a turn.

How big is the deck and who's the starting fellowship?

The problem I see is that Manager of Wizards and Still Needed are both anti-cycling. If you want to guarantee drawing those cards you just put on top of your deck, you want City of the Trees and Wells of Deep Memory. And you know what else wouldn't hurt? Uncertain Future.

How strong is this deck? The only focus I see is cycling and I agree with Thandruil, Gandalf and Still Needed don't help your cycling, same with Pippin. Another thing is: with Woodhall Elf you draw 3 cards. Not much to reconcile with. My preference lies with Dwarven cycling and Gloin. They draw like crazy, they are strong and can endure.

about half the SdA decks i've built have gloin-cycling freeps. the strength of the dwarven cycling is that it doesn't sacrifice strength for cycling. it doesn't step out on risky ground. it's just a solid dwarf deck geared to cycling.

but thran is right, gandalf sort of works against your cycling strategy, granted, you probably will be placing 3 shadow cards, so maybe it's not a problem. theoretically, you could clear out the gandalf culture altogether. that would slim it down 5 cards (to 29 i think).

only other thing i fear is that if you are gaining/losing initiative, isildur is gonna bite the dust at the end of the skirmish phase if you have used gandalf to lose initiative. or the end of the fellowship phase if you have just dropped a bunch of freeps stuff.

the last problem is pippin. theoretically he can keep burdens off  with home and hearth, but that means jumping into your hand every turn. and then he has to sit there through the shadow phase. this not only works against cycling because you take cards back into hand, but also only allows a max of 7 shadow cards in hand during the shadow phase. that might be a problem.

overall you have a LOT of good cycling

I still want to try this deck out, but cut out the telepathy part and stick with cycling. Probably means I will need to go for wounding/archery, but threats are out with Arwen, RM adding loads... so I need another outlet. Possibly choke?
