Title: The Eventual Solo Frodo
Post by: NappyKorn on August 14, 2008, 08:22:40 AM
Before the deck is posted letting it be known that if a strategy is needed I can post it, but it looks pretty self explaining .

Frodo And Ring
*The One Ring, The Great Ring(19P1)
*Frodo, Weary From The Journey(15C144)

Fellowship (30)
2x *Mithril-coat, Dwarf-mail(13R153)
1x *Farmer Maggot, Hobbit of the Marsh(11U163)
1x *Gandalf, Leader of Men(8R15)
1x *Pippin, Hobbit of Some Intelligence(12R127)
4x *The Tale of the Great Ring(10U116)
4x Home and Hearth(12C122)
3x Pressing On(7R325)
3x Scouring of the Shire(18R112)
2x Make Haste(10C109)
4x Saved From The Fire(8R20)
1x *Daddy Twofoot, Next-door Neighbor(13U144)
2x *The Gaffer, Master Gardener(13U151)
2x *Sting, Elven Long Knife(18R113)

Main thing Roast Farmer Maggot ASAP to pull Make Haste, Daddy Twofoot, Next-door Neighbor and either Scouring of the Shire or Home and Hearth. Rest you should be able to figure out if not I can edit with a deeper strategy . Have fun bashing or complimenting the deck. BTW I paired it with Troll Swarm and replaced a Gaffer with Robin Smallburrow but if there is a better card dumping engine in case of hand clogging Troll Swarm please let me know as that follower counteracts with Make Haste's ability to toss a minion (which isn't it's main goal). Make Haste simply gets Pippin to hand to remove burdens and heal when replayed . Anyway no bash/compliment the deck.

Smeagol! The one that let's you dump cards to make him str +1.

This deck is Standard that version of Smeagol isn't standard legal my friend. The one you speak of is Smeagol, Poor Creature. Click the name he is from Ents of Fangorn .

Hurried Guide would be a not-too-terrible alternative to Poor Creature, and it's Standard-legal. But unless you plan on building some support around him, that's probably not necessary. Interesting, but more a bonus than anything.

Unless you plan on burning Gandalf himself, or just letting him kick the bucket, Foe-hammer or Elven Blade couldn't hurt. Other nice little splashes would be Gandalf's Staff, Ash-staff or perhaps Wizard Staff, New Authority and/or A New Light, Traveled Leader, Salve, Brooding On Tomorrow (which might actually make Hurried Guide an intriguing choice after all :-k), Recovered Seeing Stone (which should be much more of a benefit than a hindrance with the burden removal you have), and especially Inspiration (a guaranteed -3 much of the time thanks to Pippin). I would wholeheartedly recommend Inspiration.

If you DO plan on having Gandalf just die out, then consider Sent Back, allowing you to at least take a minion with him.

Yeah Gandalf Just bites the dust after You play Saved From the Fire. Sent back is a nice idea but hopefully Farmer Maggot gets roasted by site 2 if not site 1 and i would hardly want to pack enough Sent Backs to get it that early without a bit of luck .

On the contrary, he is vital for dumping excessive cards that you might have, thus improving your cards flow, and also, he gives you access to Safe Passage allowing a massive choking engine. Also, Swear By The Precious is always an option to keep Frodo alive. But anyways, some way to dump extra cards, if only Robin Smallburrow, is essential to the deck being competitive. I prefer Smeagol, but if you want a true solo, go Smallburrow.

Well I have tested this deck out twice now and Have won both games. Of course it was the shadow that killed in both but the freeps have done very well. Frodo is very annoying since he takes no more than 1 wound a skirmish and can exert to cancel the fierce of all minions he faces . After he takes the wound from round one then exerts to cancel all fierces he heals right back up with Pippin being replayed then The Gaffer attaching to him so he can do it all over again . One Game I played with G-E that crashed was his Little Snufflers. He claimed to have x4 of it in hand and DaD as well and if that was the case Frodo was dead for sure, but luckily for me I got a crash still gave him the win and we played a rematch which didn't crash and went my way. When we got into region 2 Little Snufflers wasn't much of a threat nad with me killing his Smeagol ASAP he couldn't burn him with SFtF to quick his snuffler early enough. Anyway I like the deck and I may actually try to build this one next .

Unless you are afraid of the Gaffer being discarded, you might as well replace one copy of him with community living to help the deck cycle better ever so slightly.  And I would say that replacing one copy of make haste with Hurried Guide would be a great idea, both to help cycle and to boost the chances of a saved in your opening hand.  If you decide to do this, consider adding one or two copies of Deagol to fetch Frodo's stuff.  They can replace the superfluous copies of sting and the coat, and you can travel to dammed gate stream to fetch him.

I still don't get it, how the Pippin is replayed?

Better watch it the dead post resurrection police might cite you for this violation. To answer your question though, Pippin is sent back to hand every site with Make Haste then he is replayed from your hand.

as long as its constructive, like asking for help understanding a decktype, Resurrecting threads is all good. I mean what are we here for, if not to help people learn, and further interest in the game.

It was all in good humor and I did answer his question. Seems like the boards are slowly dying here anyway and it doesnt bother me if people do resurrect old threads or ask the same question a million times a post is a post and just happy to see posts being made still .

I've noticed a major drop from when I joined to now, and that was this summer.  I hope it's just a seasonal thing, though (people having more free time over the summer).

I'll try and post a bit then :)

Recently joined, played for years, live near Melbourne, Oz. Any players around here? :)

We only have two players left around here!

I stopped buying cards before the end so don't much of the newer ones, but my mate who plays has a bunch of newer cards.

Haven't checked out the online play yet but I plan to.

Oh, hijacking, um, Go Frodo! Haven't played a deck like that, I do have an old Smeagol / faramir deck that I'm pretty keen on, but it's been ages since I've checked out what's legal in Standard and what's not :)
