Title: mithrandir or white wizard
Post by: jdizzy001 on March 25, 2015, 07:21:32 AM
Both are great skirmishing gandalfs. One is twilight dependent, the other requires constant healing. I've seen both used to great effect. Which do you prefer? Don't like either of them? Which one do you like?

Mithrandir, with all the toys. Namely Lightning Brand, Greatheart, Walking Stick, and Narya. With some backup healing, I've had this Gandy just lay waste to Shelobs and Balrogs, then just keep trucking. Top tier strategy? Nope. Lots of fun? You better believe it. I just wish he had the Gandalf signet so I could use Gandalf's Wisdom to better effect.

I prefer vastly the white wizard. Mithrandir is just unreliable, if you dont get the cards you might need he dies to his own ability.

In my opinion, both aren't ideal. If I have to play a Dandy Gandy I'll pick Leader of Men or Manager of Wizards.. For the obvious reasons :P.

Mithrandir is still fun to play though, but as thetimewarptrio said it isn't top tier or anything.

Same goes for The White Wizard, you need quite a bit of events in your deck to get him to work nicely and that can choke your own hand, which I never like. Also the extra twilight makes it harder to double.

Depends on the format of course, but my favorite Gandalf is definitely Wise Guide. Powerful Guide is also quite popular, as is Bearer of Obligation. Elf players of course love Manager of Wizards, while the Saved From the Fire guys love Leader of Men. Depends on what you want Gandalf to do for you. I almost never see Mithrandir or The White Wizard, though.

I'm a big fan of ages end all around. Sadly, they have a great unloaded keyword that is almost unusable :(. But yes, Wise Guide is a great gandalf. Sarge, next time I see you on gemp, I will use one of my wizard decks.

I like both of them, but Mithrandir is definitely my favourite. The fact that he has the Aragorn signet allows you to use him with both Aragorn, King in Exile, to cancel out his wounding each turn, and Hard Choice for additional healing. I also find his constant strength more reliable than The White Wizard's, which depends on an opponent not being able to remove twilight in a skirmish. I usually use The White Wizard in tank decks, or decks that add a lot of twilight in the maneuver phase, which is made easier in Expanded by followers. Likewise, Mithrandir is much easier to use in Expanded because of Shadowfax, Unequaled Steed. In the earlier formats, even cards like Intimidate will help out Mithrandir, and in movie you get Moment of Respite, which helps a lot. You can also increase his vitality with Narya and Gandalf's Staff, and then just use Sanctuary healing on him, as he's less likely than most companions to lose skirmishes. Mithrandir also has built-in Damage + 1, unlike The White Wizard or Defender of the West, which helps a lot with finishing off lesser minions early-game.
