Starting LOTR TCG Deck Building With Fellowship Block
« on: August 08, 2020, 12:42:23 PM »
I would to learn how to build a Fellowship Block deck, It was recommended that I start with Fellowship because I'm new to LOTR TCG, though I've played other TCGs and some starter games of LOTR TCG mostly long ago. For learning, would copying a deck first or just learning how to build one work better?
I have little LOTR deck building experience.

Update Oct 26 2020: I have received feedback on my 3 decks with Uruk-hai shadows (one for each competitive Fotr Gandalf and an Elves/Aragon Free Peoples deck I found in the wiki), I am playing them and taking notes.
The decks before the feedback are below. I am also working on a dwarf/Moria swarm deck because lower down dwarves were recommended to go with Moria Swarm to use Delving and Book of Mazarbul.

Here is my Rough Draft of a Dwarves Moria deck, 42 card halves Starting Gimli and Gloin with Delving and the Book of Mazarbul and Goblin Scimitar

What goes with Uruk-Hai?

Here is an Uurk-Hai attempt based on a game I watched on GEMP
40 cards

Minions: 29
2x Lurtz Servant of Isengard
4x Troop of Uruk Hai
4x Uruk Captain
4x Orthanc Assassin
4x Orthanc Berserker
4x Uruk Warrior
4x Uruk Lieutenant
3X Uruk Guard

Events 8
3x Uruk-Hai Sword
4x Savagery to Match Their Numbers

Weapons
4x Worry

I was going for high power minions. After watching a game on GEMP I saw the importance of Worry, Orhanc Berserker and Orthanc Assassin. The deck with Uruk-Hai won. Worry helps add burdens when Uruk Hai win fights. Orthanc Berserker can exhaust a companion if there is enough burdens. What  is a good number of Uruk Hai for this strategy, does 40 cards/side work? I also saw Uruk Ravager (cheaper with Saruman) and Saruman Keeper of Isengard. How do I fit Saruman in there? I also saw Can You Protect Me From Yourself.

I would like something with some card cycling/card draw for free peoples to get more Uruk-Hai if I need to go for a shadow win.

In general, 40 cards is pretty big unless you play on drawing and discarding a lot of cards (which your Shadow side won't). Most people would steer you down to 34 at most. The closer to 30 the better as a rule (I myself rarely drop below 36 and cycle until it hurts instead). This is especially true in Fellowship block, where before site 7 you often won't have the twilight to do what you want. You definitely want Keeper of Isengard in there if possible. He doesn't really count as a minion himself, but makes every other minion you play worth two and makes them nigh on invincible. Leaning into Worry and Orthanc Berserker makes this a much more specialized deck -- in general the 4 wounds you'd deal in skirmishes are worth more than the exertion or burden on Frodo, especially once Sam, Son of Hamfast takes the burdens away. Still, as you saw it's certainly doable.

Because Uruk-hai are relatively expensive, you're right to look for cycling. Otherwise you could find yourself stuck with a hand full of minions too often while your FP is getting thrashed. The easiest way around this is Elrond, Lord of Rivendell with Ottar, Man of Laketown to draw 4 cards every Fellowship turn and discard whatever you don't need to boot (before Tower Assassin comes knocking, anyway). So you'll need Gandalf. The Grey Pilgrim and Friend of the Shirefolk are really the only two choices, and which you want depends on how you want to play.

The Grey Pilgrim will draw you another 6-8 cards over the course of the game. He's the perfect accent for any strategy, though you need to start with him to get the most out of him. Friend of the Shirefolk is the opposite, you probably want to play him once he'll be strength 9 -- easiest if you're already starting Legolas and Gimli. You'll have to build your deck with him in mind, but the result is a strong Fellowship that can do it all.

If you're interested, there's a few good posts gathered here that might be able to guide your decisions. I was a forge-my-own-path type getting into the game, which is why I'm being more general than specific. Of course, if you want detailed suggestions I'll be happy to provide them!

Maybe I saw more of an Orthanc Berzerker corruption deck, with worry and can you protect me from yourself, than a normal uruk-Hai deck, The Wiki entry under Sauruman keeper of Isengard says he goes better with cheaper uruk-hai and lots of pumps, how many pumps is a lot, and how important is worry?

I remember a fellowship of Legolas Greenleaf and Awen starting and then Aragorn and Gandalf friend to the Shirefolk, Frodo Old Bilbo's Heir and Allies like Bounder and Gandalf Allies. Also Arwen's sword helps. No idea how to build free peoples.

I found this free peoples deck in the wiki under Legolas Greanleaf, it has Gwemegil and Elrond Lord of Rivendell. As well as Aragorn, like the deck I saw did but no Gandalf. It starts Arwen and Legolas.

Example Decks
Fellowship Block "Super Friends" by Ringbearer

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
Ring: The One Ring, Isildur's Bane

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
1x Arwen, Daughter of Elrond
1x Legolas, Greenleaf
4x Aragorn, Heir to the White City 6
2x Boromir, Defender of Minas Tirith 8
1x Celeborn, Lord of Lorien 9
3x Elrond, Lord of Rivendell 12
3x Galadriel, Lady of Light 15
1x Orophin, Lorien Bowman 16
1x Rúmil, Elven Protector 17
2x Gwemegil 19
2x Aragorn's Bow 21
1x Armor 22
1x Flaming Brand 23
1x Horn of Boromir 24
2x Ranger's Sword 26
2x Sting 28
2x Secret Sentinels 30
2x The Last Alliance of Elves and Men 32

I read in the wiki that Saruman Keepr of Isengard Went with cheaper Uruk-hai and lots of pumps. the idea is to use cheaper uruks (no lurtz or 5 cost uruks) to get more out with Saruman.
Using Saruman and cheaper uruk-hai and and lots of pumps (went with 0 cost pumps) and 35 cards to match the free peoples deck I found. (would that work?) (close to 34) I could also build my own free peoples with Gandalf plus that ally. I'm sure I will need to edit this shadow deck no matter what I pair it with but I don't know what to change. Also could Troop of Uruk-hai or Orthanc Assassin or Lurtz fit in here or are their twilight costs too high?

23 Minions
4x Uruk Captain (brings back Uruk-hai)
4x Uruk Ravager
4x Uruk Warrior
4x Uruk Lieutenant
4x Uruk Slayer
3x Uruk Guard

8 Pumps
4x Savagery to Match Their Numbers
4x Saruman's Ambition

4 Sauruman
4x Saruman Keeper of Isengard

To use Elrond and Ottar, man of laketown, which Gandalf would be better with this deck? The card draw Gandalf or a Legolas and Gimli Start for Gandalf Friend of the Shirefolk? Who would go with Gandalf the Grey Pilgrim?

Here is a Grey Pilgrim Gondor attemt (start Gandalf)

It uses Aragorn King in Exile to heal everybody.

Grey Pilgrim Gondor Uruks Fellowship
Ring-bearer: Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
Ring: The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

Adventure deck:
The Prancing Pony
Breeland Forest
Rivendell Terrace

2x Boromir, Lord of Gondor
3x Elrond, Lord of Rivendell
3x Ottar, Man of Laketown
2x Glamdring
2x Wizard Staff
2x Aragorn's Bow
1x Armor
1x Flaming Brand
1x Horn of Boromir
2x Ranger's Sword
2x Sting

Four Uruk Captain is way too many. He's unique, so you can't have more than one of them in play at a time. You don't want to get stuck with an unfortunate hand with multiple copies.

I'm not going to tell you something is perfect, because nothing is perfect, but this is close to perfect.

Shadow Draw Deck:
1x Lurtz, Servant of Isengard
3x Saruman, Keeper of Isengard
4x Troop of Uruk-hai
2x Uruk Captain
3x Uruk Fighter
4x Uruk Lieutenant
4x Uruk Ravager
1x The Balrog, Durin's Bane
1x Beyond the Height of Men
1x Lurtz's Battle Cry
1x Saruman's Power
4x Savagery To Match Their Numbers
1x Greed
1x No Business of Ours
3x Saruman's Ambition
2x Saruman's Snows

Cheers,

Thanks Ket,

I am working two Gandalf deck (for Grey Pilgrim and Friend of the Shirefolk, thanks to Phallen's suggestion

I had also found a Legolas Greenleaf/Aragorn Heir to the White City 35 card free peoples deck that has Gwemegil and Elrond Lord of Rivendell in the LOTR wiki,  (draw/cycle, which I am looking for),under Legolas Greenleaf, would it work with the Uruks? Not sure about the sites. Could remove No Business of Ours to make them the same size or add a card to the elf deck.

It would look like this:

Legolas Arwen Gondor Uruks Fellowship
Ring-bearer: Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
Ring: The One Ring, Isildur's Bane

Adventure deck:
Westfarthing
Breeland Forest
House of Elrond

The Bridge of Khazad-dum
Caras Galadhon
Silverlode Banks
Pillars of the Kings

1x Flaming Brand
1x Horn of Boromir
2x Ranger's Sword

2x Secret Sentinels
2x The Last Alliance of Elves and Men
3x No Stranger to the Shadows

Shadow Draw Deck:

The Aragorn/elves free peoples deck I found on the wiki works with the Uruk shadow deck Ket the Jet helped with. However I would like to know the strategies I could do that do not require winning the bid to go first to use a location (like the Prancing Pony) to find a character. I would like to be unpredictable. I would also like feed back on the my two Gandalf deck attempts.

Grey Pilgrim Gondor Uruks Fellowship

Use Aragorn to heal Gandalf, Boromir and Frodo
Try to win with either Free Peoples or Shadow.
Can draw and cycle a lot with Elrond and Ottar. Build a strong Aragorn and a Strong Gandalf. Has Aragorn's Bow and Legolas Greenleaf to clear out minions.
Perhaps Aragorn, Heir top the White City + No Stranger to the shadows would work better? I wanted to try the Healing Aragorn.

Ring-bearer: Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
Ring: The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

Adventure deck:
The Prancing Pony
Breeland Forest
Rivendell Terrace
Hollin
The Bridge of Khazad-dum
Galadriel's Glade
The Great River
Gates of Argonath
Summit of Amon Hen

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
2x Legolas, Greenleaf
1x Gandalf, The Grey Pilgrim (starting)
4x Aragorn, King in Exile
2x Boromir, Lord of Gondor
3x Elrond, Lord of Rivendell
3x Ottar, Man of Laketown
2x Glamdring
2x Wizard Staff
2x Aragorn's Bow
1x Armor
1x Flaming Brand
1x Horn of Boromir
2x Ranger's Sword
2x Sting
2x Narya
4x Servant of the Secret Fire
2x Sleep, Caradhras

Shadow Draw Deck:
1x Lurtz, Servant of Isengard
3x Saruman, Keeper of Isengard
4x Troop of Uruk-hai
2x Uruk Captain
3x Uruk Fighter
4x Uruk Lieutenant
4x Uruk Ravager
1x The Balrog, Durin's Bane
1x Beyond the Height of Men
1x Lurtz's Battle Cry
1x Saruman's Power
4x Savagery To Match Their Numbers
1x Greed
1x No Business of Ours
3x Saruman's Ambition
2x Saruman's Snows

Here is the Gandalf FotS version

FotS Uruks Aragorn
Ring-bearer: Frodo, Reluctant Adventurer
Ring: The One Ring, The Ruling Ring

Draw Gandalf with Elrond or find Gandalf with A Wizard is Never Late, which can  also find Ottar, Man of laketown
Fight with Aragorn and Gandalf, Try to win with both Free Peoples and Shadow

Adventure deck:
The Prancing Pony
Breeland Forest
Council Courtyard
Hollin
The Bridge of Khazad-dum
Galadriel's Glade
Anduin Wilderlands
Gates of Argonath
Summit of Amon Hen

Free Peoples Draw Deck:
1x Gimli, Son of Gloin (starting)
1x Legolas, Greenleaf (starting)
4x Gandalf, Friend of the Shirefolk
3x Aragorn, Heir to the White City
3x Elrond, Lord of Rivendell
3x Ottar, Man of Laketown
2x Gimli's Battle Axe
2x Glamdring
1x Armor
1x Flaming Brand
2x Ranger's Sword
2x Sting
2x Narya
3x A Wizard is Never Late
4x Servant of the Secret Fire
2x Sleep, Caradhras

Shadow Draw Deck:
1x Lurtz, Servant of Isengard
3x Saruman, Keeper of Isengard
4x Troop of Uruk-hai
2x Uruk Captain
3x Uruk Fighter
4x Uruk Lieutenant
4x Uruk Ravager
1x The Balrog, Durin's Bane

1x Saruman's Power
4x Savagery To Match Their Numbers
1x Greed
1x No Business of Ours
3x Saruman's Ambition
2x Saruman's Snows

Played the Grey Pilgrim/ King in Exile deck from the post above this one. Faced Gandalf FoTS and Nazgul with lots of black breath and blade tip. Gandalf died at site 3, could of sacrificed ottar but forgot about black breath. If I sacrificed ottar I would have a chance to try to draw sleep carhadras. Still I went all the way to site 9 and decked myself using ottar for lots of cards because I was desperate because Gandalf was dead. Had to throw away a lot of minions because I lost Gandalf and needed more companions. I got them but they all died and a lonely frodo died at site 9 to an overwhelm. Include the shire condition that cancels a ringbearer Nazgul skirmish? Nazgul are tough if Gandalf dies. 72 card deck I ran out of cards.

Every deck should have a contingency if they have to go second :) Though looking at these decklists, you already have 3-4 copies of Aragorn. Prancing Pony is just a convenience at that point. With the card drawing in each of the decks, you're going to be able to play Aragorn before site 5 almost all the time. It's still good to try for first though, since not only will that put pressure on your opponent to make riskier moves but you also can drop 4 twilight at a way safer point in the game.

Solid deck, by the looks of it. Because of the card drawing I think the deck size is alright, but there are some changes I would make. I don't play a ton of Fellowship Block, so if anyone else has any ideas I'd want to hear them myself! I think there is currently plenty of protection from Swarm with the archery and Servant of the Secret Fire, but fierce minions (Nazgul and especially Uruks) might give you some trouble. You can draw up to 5 cards each turn with your Free Peoples, so you can drop some of the less important duplicates in favor of stuff to beef up a bit more. Nazgul and Uruks are both expensive, so No Stranger to Shadows will go a long way and you'll be safe if only one or two companions can handle them.

-1x Horn of Boromir (you have few allies and they are important -- they'd die to a strong minion and I don't think you need the extra swarm protection)
-1x Wizard Staff
-1x Legolas, Greenleaf
-1x Narya
+1x No Stranger to the Shadows
+1x Elrond, Lord of Rivendell (Better to draw and play him as soon as possible, plus extra copies cost no deck space since they'll be instantly replaced with another card)
+1x The Last Alliance of Elves and Men (a bit of permanent strength for your main fighter -- you should still let Legolas die when he's no longer useful)
+1x Armor (your opponent will use Beyond the Height of Men too)

I would consider Wizard Staff a situational card. 1 strength is always good, but sometimes 2 twilight for your opponent outweighs the benefit. Sting will be able to see if there's any harm in playing it, and if there is don't hesitate to discard it with Ottar! If you find yourself decking out often, here are some suggestions for extra FP cards: Barliman Butterbar, Prancing Pony Proprietor; Hobbit Stealth; O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!; a second copy of No Stranger to Shadows; extra Flaming Brand for Ulaire Cantea, Lieutenant of Dol Guldur; and Orophin or Rumil. Depends on what you find gives the deck the most trouble, which will shift from time to time with the meta.

For the Shadow side, the only thing I'd look at is how often No Business of Ours does you any good. I have definitely seen Sting win games against Uruk-hai by revealing a bad hand, and this would probably save you from that sometimes. But other than that, how much does it matter when your opponent knows what's coming? If you remove it, I'd replace it with either another minion or Abandoning Reason for Madness. I'm partial to Uruk Guard myself, but there are several good options still available to you: Orthanc Berserker is a good fighter even if you never use his text (most people don't), Orthanc Assassin does well even if his archery doesn't usually make a difference, Uruk-hai Raiding Party looks boring but the extra vitality matters a surprising amount of the time, Uruk Slayer does a great job making your opponent think twice before using Secret Sentinels. If you need to add more cards, minions and Abandoning Reason for Madness are where I'd go, too.

Your site path is fine, but see what you think about this:
7) The Great River -- Doesn't really help you except against Moria, and again I think you've got plenty help there. Plus you're behind at this point and I don't know that this would help you double. Silverlode Banks can destroy a Fellowship, but almost everyone plays at least one Ranger to avoid it. I think it would be a better choice. My choice would be Anduin Confluence -- riskier because it does harm you, but if you're running behind it might be more important to harm your opponent's Free Peoples than to help your own.
9) Summit of Amon Hen -- Your opponent will probably have a few burdens, so the card drawing works in your favor. However, in most cases you can plan for whether you're going to be at site 9 or your opponent is. If you know you won't make it, you already have Elrond and Ottar to build the perfect hand, a few more cards won't likely make a difference. Doubly so when you can't afford them. Slopes of Amon Hen, on the other hand, will let you play an extra Uruk-hai or Saruman for free. If you find yourself not having Saruman at the end when you need him, or if you decide to go with The Great River and lose your allies, Emyn Muil* is a decent substitute. I would try to make Slopes of Amon Hen work first.

Both of these site substitutions benefit from a copy or two of Abandoning Reason for Madness. After No Business of Ours, the extra copy of Saruman's Snows and Lurtz's Battle Cry are what I'd trade.

Here is the Gandalf FotS version

Draw Gandalf with Elrond or find Gandalf with A Wizard is Never Late, which can  also find Ottar, Man of laketown
Fight with Aragorn and Gandalf, Try to win with both Free Peoples and Shadow

Here's what I'd do:
-3x A Wizard is Never Late (I think 4 copies of Gandalf is enough for this deck)
-1x Gimli's Battle Axe (You need someone to throw in front of Cantea anyways
-1x Narya
+1x Hobbit Stealth (Mostly for The Balrog, but this is such a great card overall for Fellowship block)
+1x No Stranger to the Shadows
+1x O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! (swarm and anti-Nazgul)
+1x Gimli's Helm (Better than a second copy of Armor)
+1x Elrond, Lord of Rivendell

The site and shadow suggestions from above apply here too, and if you find Council Courtyard helps your opponent more than you I'd switch back to Rivendell Terrace.

The Aragorn deck using the Free Peoples Aragorn/Elves deck I dound on the wiki, it works, but only played it twice so far, have not tried the Gandalf Decks

The big thing I'd consider is protection for Boromir from Such a Little Thing, since that's going to be your biggest asset against swarm. The Saga of Elendil is a good option. For some extra possessions, Flaming Brand is easy and effective, Asfaloth can be nice, and you can also think about Elven Bow to put on Arwen (or Celeborn and Elrond for when they're called to battle). Harder to say what to cut though. My first thought is to lose some duplicates:
-1x Aragorn's Bow
-1x Ranger's Sword
+2x other possessions (I would go 1x Flaming Brand and 1x Elven Bow)

Optional: -1x The Last Alliance of Elves and Men, +1x The Saga of Elendil (Boromir won't be fighting, but sending others to fight for him in this case)

I didn't cut Gwemegil because I think it's the best weapon in the block. If you did, though, another Elven Bow or adding The Saga of Elendil without losing The Last Alliance would be nice.

What kind of Free Peoples Strategies work well with Moria Swarm with Cave Troll? The decks with Moria Swarm I saw on the forum have 38-42 card Shadow and Free Peoples decks. What is a good deck size for Moria Swarm?

The following cards seem important
Cave Troll, Balrog Flame of Udun Goblin Runner, Goblin Scavengers, Moria Scout, Host of Thousands, Goblin Armory, Goblin Swarms, They are Coming, Relics of Moria see important, and other goblins seem important, some like Moria axe. Possibly such a little thing.

I've also seen

Goblin Scrabbler, Goblin Warrior, Guard Commander, Troll's Keyward, Goblin Flankers

The wiki has a deck under Gandalf, the Grey Pilgirm that uses Gandalf, The Grey Pilgrim, Elrond and Ottar to set up a super Moria shadow hand.

Thank you,

I'd suggest Dwarves. Use Delving and Book of Mazarbul to draw huge hands.

A big deck for Moria is great because it means you can go crazy with They Are Coming.
