The Ring Goes South
« on: August 14, 2020, 09:24:09 AM »
With a friend of mine I had a go at making a set using the Card Generator. We mostly just play Movie block so we wanted to make 3 sets that could act as a continuation of Movie, so no Shadows+ stuff. Here is the first, based on Fellowship. Its our first attempt at DC's so I hope you like it.

Dwarves

This one is supposed to be a tale, must have missed it off.

Gandalf

I know this image is from Towers but was really hard to find a good Glamdring shot from Fellowship. And yeah I know Glamdring is normally not an Artifact but I've always thought that was stupid so decided to change it.

Image from the Hobbit I know but was hard to get a good image for this one from Fellowship

These were a lot of fun to read. I loved some of the themes you came up with.

DUDE.  These are fantastic.  I particularly love the expansion of the Moria orc-under-deck idea, the Balrog stuff, and the Ringwraith shadow-card-on-freeps-deck mechanic.

If you're interested in doing more of this sort of thing with a larger group of people, we in the Player's Council would love to have someone with your design flair.

I would recommend changing the generator to output Double or even Original size when showing off like this; Huge is, like, massive and this whole page took my 50 mbps down internet like, two minutes to load, lol.  I would also advise occasionally putting in manual line breaks for your titles so they don't get put awkwardly on two lines, by default you can do this with the \ character or with <br>.

(There's actually, like, a lot of formatting and wording issues here, but that's all typos that can be fixed.  Your grasp on interesting gameplay is clearly excellent.)

Wow, thanks for the great feedback. I'm not surprised that there are some formatting and typo issues as it took me ages to get to grips with HTML, not really my forte. I think these cards were outputted in double size, but I'm not sure. Certainly their file names all have the word double in them. How do you change the size of file that it outputs?

Oh snap, I didn't even realize that this was Double, lol.  Goes to show just how enormous of a size increase these templates are.

In settings.txt, you can change [card_size] to be any of huge, double, or original.  "original" is the same size as the images on this website, with double 2X that size and huge is 4X.

It's going to be ghoulish reviewing these since they aren't easily-quotable, but I randomly took a deeper read on Celeborn and I'm going to skip a bunch of stuff in the middle and show you my suggested rewrite of the card with a brief explanation following.

[2] •Celeborn, Prince of Doriath [Elven]
Ally • Home 6 • Elf
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
To play, spot 3 Elves.
Each time you play an [Elven] tale, you may exert Celeborn to make a companion strength +1 until the regroup phase.

I've tightly-muzzled him, I know. No healing effect, he needs 3 Elves, and the +1 now requires an exert.

That's sort of where I think Allies as a card type are headed (and Elf allies in particular). For a minor additional Pro for using him, this would also be a good spot for muster.

From here I'm just gonna start dotting some reviews in.

Quote from: Finarfin
Gandalf, SoV

I find Gandalf's discount effect to be intriguing. I could see something like this appearing on other close-to-Frodo character cards.

Quote from: Finarfin
Whip of Many Thongs, FotFA

7 line limit on a card.

Quote from: Finarfin
Become Terribly Clear

Compare to Their Eyes Fell On Him, a in-process card that's been through a few rounds of discussion.

Some Evil Work

Sweet! I'd suggest we find another picture since A Shadow Rises is already out there, but A+ card concept that I'd vote to pass right along to playtesting.

Bilbo, Son of Bungo

What a delicious subtitle that is.

This card is incredibly interesting to me. He's got Young Bilbo's stats, a Shire-heavy subtitle, and a Shire-building effect. To me (especially with the chosen image), this version of Bilbo should have something to do with the Ring.

What do you think of something like this:

"To play, add a burden.
Response: If a [Shire] companion wins a skirmish, exert Bilbo twice to play a [Shire] condition from your draw deck."

Thanks for the reviews.

For Celeborn I want him to be a bit better than that, he always got kinda left out before. Maybe as you have put but at the start of rach turn he heals himself. Otherwise I think the ability has really limited use. And I might change it from 'make a companion strength +1' to 'make an elf strength +1'

As for Bilbo yeah thats a good change.

The minus twilight on the gandalf is a feature of the set with all most of the fellowship characters. The aim was to create a cohesive cycle of all the Fellowship that you could actually make a deck of.

And Their Eyes Fell on Him is very powerful, possibly too much with Resistance Becomes Unbearable, Gates of the Dead City, It Wants to Be Found and Gollum DaD
