Announcing the LOTR-TCG-Wiki 2.0 Beta!
« on: September 20, 2021, 01:09:36 PM »

Anyone who has used the wiki here knows that there are some issues with it, from organization to presentation and to most obviously the fact that it has been locked for editing for far too long.

We would like to announce that we are overhauling the wiki to make it more usable, useful, and more easily maintainable by the community at large.  The most obvious update is that we are changing the software that the wiki uses from DokuWiki to the more famous MediaWiki (the same software that powers Wikipedia).

For now, all of the old pages have been imported into the Beta Wiki at https://wiki.lotrtcgpc.net.  Only a very few procedural changes have been applied, and there are ALL SORTS of formatting, linking, and presentation issues present, but the foundation is laid to turn this into the One Wiki To Rule Them All.

We could very much use some help!  If various parts of the wiki have irked or bothered you for the past decade, now is the chance to come in and share your ideas, and have some impact for the decade to come!

The old wiki will not be replaced until the new one is polished to a shine (and not until TLHH is migrated to PC servers).

NEW FEATURES IN THE NEW WIKI:

- Better Search -- all cards have article titles that fit their actual card name, meaning that the search is no longer so frustrating to use.

- Moderation Tools -- new users can edit anything they want, up to and including new cards, and those edits will go into a moderation queue for administrators to approve of.  If a user proves themselves to be not-a-troll, they will be granted the 'trusted' tag to skip the moderation queue.

- New Cards -- All of the Hobbit Draft Game cards have been added to this wiki (although there's an issue where all the card images have been shuffled--one of those issues we need to smooth over!).  Anyone can add new cards, and we will be establishing criteria for other fan sets to be added to the wiki, including PC cards.

NEW FEATURES COMING SOON:

- Data Queries -- being able to create automatic tables that list all cards that follow certain criteria, such as "All [Gandalf] Cards", or "All cards that interact with the 'fortification' keyword" or "All cards that exert as an effect" will be able to be set up.  This means that if a card is added or edited to include the criteria, all tables can be automatically updated without needing to perform tedious trivial updates throughout the wiki.  This functionality will also be able to live as an Advanced Search form for ad-hoc card searches.

- Rich Card Tables -- It's one thing to show a giant table with a bunch of text in it, but a lot of times you recognize a card by its image rather than its text.  We now have the ability to upload card portrait thumbnails, to make compact yet recognizable tables.

- Alternate Card Versions -- The wiki right now only shows the original Decipher-hosted English web images for cards, but there's a lot of variants that could be presented: foreign language cards, print errors, and errata versions.  Eventually we will have each card holding a gallery that only defaults to the standard English version, with all the other versions present on the same page to be browsed through.

It's an exciting time, so if any of this piques your interest we encourage you to sign up at https://wiki.lotrtcgpc.net, and to coordinate your wiki efforts with PC members at https://lotrtcgpc.net/discord.  We will also be posting major initiatives in threads on the Wiki subboard of TLHH: https://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php?board=55.0

If you have any comments or ideas, please feel free to leave them here, and feel freer to come join us!  If you need a place to start, look here: https://lotrtcgwiki.com/forums/index.php?topic=11985.msg98382
