Best way to complete sets?
« on: April 17, 2020, 12:48:37 PM »
I'm on a mission to complete my LOTRTCG sets, one of every card, 1-10 (including 9) on a strict budget. I already have 77% of the cards I need though buying packs. To my calculation, I'm missing 436 cards,  about 95% of them are rare/rare+. I am trying to get them in English, but I wouldn't mind Tenguar cards. So far, the only sites I found are eBay, Category One games (haven't ordered from), and Hill's Wholesale Gaming. Trading the cards here isn't really an option because I only have commons and a few uncommons to trade. If anyone knows some (reputable and secure) sites I can buy from or any tips, please let me know.

I bought from CategoryOne before, no issues. I think your best bet would be to list some wants and offer cash -- you'll get a better deal than eBay for sure, and usually wholesale too.

What would you recommend for set 9 rare+ cards? Best I found was around 3 dollars a card. Is that a good price?

It depends on which R+ the card is, but a brief survey tells me that most R+ cost more than $3 US.

Unfortunately, the price for Reflections has jumped in the last decade.  With a little searching, I could find boxes for $60 in 2012.

Shouldn't be horribly difficult since you're sticking with blocks 1-10.  Now if you decide to try and collect complete foil sets, that is a completely different story (VERY difficult).

Glad I'm not doing that! I found that at worst, I would be paying $90 for sets (base sets and RotEL). I found a French copy of that for $40 (wish I spoke French now), but that would drive me nuts looking up the cards every 2 seconds. Resale value is not my priority, and neither is foils. I'm just into getting 1 of every card so I can build almost any deck except the ones based off multiple rares of the same card.

I don't particularly enjoy sets 11-19 (as much), and I'm glad after looking at the prices. If I ever want to play with those cards, I use Gemp for that. Don't take me wrong, I enjoy 11-19, just not enough to ever buy physicals.

You're going to have a difficult time building a cohesive deck using 1 of each card. If you find yourself in need of duplicate C/UCs, I can probably hook you up.

You aren't alone, but there's still some sweet stuff in those sets if you can parse all the... hmm... hasty decisions that were made.

The only sets I need C/UCs in is 3 and 6 (we all need 3 haha). I am already used to not having more rares than usually just one per card, so that's not a problem. In fact, I've got around 350 I've got ready to trade, but I'm not sure how many commons trade for rares on average here.

How are we supposed to help you finish your collection if you won't give card names!? We need card names!

So.... I bought the collection I mentioned at an average $3 a card for the R+ ($80 for the set), and now it runs $600. WOW. My Gil-Galad card makes me wonder if I should grade it.

EDIT: To clarify, this was 2 years ago.
