Request-a-DC
« on: February 07, 2009, 10:08:59 AM »
Akin to the old threads on Cobra Cards. Give me a card title (and culture, if you'd like), and I'll produce a DC. Fire away!

Lurtzy's card: (Sucks in Standard, but kicks #$&*@! in Fellowship Block).
[7]Lurtz, Pawn of Saruman [Isengard]
Minion • Uruk-hai
Strength: 13
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 5
Fierce. While you can spot Saruman, Lurtz is damage +1.
Regroup: Spot an unbound Hobbit and discard Lurtz to return that Hobbit to its owner's hand. The Free Peoples player may wound another companion twice to prevent this.
"…he was pierced with many black-feathered arrows; his sword was still in his hand, but it was broken near the hilt…."

The Old Took's card: (Simple, but useful).
[3] Oliphaunt [Raider]
Possession • Mount
Strength +2
Vitality +1
Bearer must be a [Raider] Man.
Each time bearer wins a skirmish, you may add a threat (or 2 threats if you can spot 3 burdens on the Ring-bearer).
"‘Swertings we call ‘em in our tales; and they ride on oliphaunts, ‘tis said, when they fight.'"

Thran's card: (I'm disappointed with this; even the title is lame. But I have an excuse: I'm sick).
[3]Lugdush, Troop Leader [Isengard]
Minion • Uruk-hai
Strength: 9
Vitality: 2
Site Number: 4
Fierce.
Assignment: Exert Lugdush to reveal the top [X] cards of the Free Peoples player's draw deck, where [X] is the numbers of minions you can spot. Discard all Free Peoples cards revealed. The Free Peoples player may exert each companion to prevent this.
"‘West and a little north. Follow Lugdush.'"

GloinTheDark's card (I neglected to mention please submit only one title at a time).
[4]Saruman, The White [Gandalf]
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: [Ring] 2
Ring-bound.
Saruman is resistance +1 for each possession or artifact he bears.
At the start of each skirmish involving Saruman, you must add a burden or add [2].
"‘For Saruman the White is the greatest of my order.'"

This should be nice, especially in a Solo Sméagol / Ninja Gollum deck for getting your Shadow side set up (and of course pulling those useful skirmish events for Sméagol).

[1] To Catch a Fish So Juicy Sweeeet! [Gollum]
Event • Maneuver
Exert Sméagol and discard a card from hand to reveal the top 3 cards of your draw deck. Take all revealed [Gollum] cards into hand and place the remaining cards on the bottom of your draw deck.
"At once it sat down and began to gnaw at the small silver thing that glittered as it turned...."

[6] Misty Mountain Giant [Orc]
Minion • Orc
Strength: 15
Vitality: 2
Site Number: 4
To play, spot an [Orc] minion.
Regroup: Discard this minion to add a burden.
The Orcs of the Misty Mountains were foes to be reckoned with.

Feels rather lame, and I didn't feel like digging up any lore from The Hobbit, but there you go.

[4]Uglúk, Isengard Leader [Isengard]
Minion • Uruk-hai
Strength: 9
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 5
Fierce. Tracker. When you play Uglúk, you may add [1] for each unbound Hobbit you can spot.
Regroup: Exert Uglúk and discard a card from hand to play the fellowship's next site.
"‘We came out of Isengard, and led you here, and we shall lead you back by the way we choose. I am Uglúk. I have spoken.'"

[8]Gate Troll (V) [Sauron]
Minion • Troll
Strength: 13
Vitality: 4
Site Number: 6
Damage +1. To play, spot 3 [Sauron] minions.
At the the start of the regroup phase, you may exert Gate Troll [X] times to add [X] threats.
"Taller and broader than Men they were...."

I want a card that has an unloaded keyword which does not exist currently in the game. But I'll leave you to decide what that keyword is... ;)

I've got to make it a bit of a challenge!

[2]Glóin, Revered Dwarf [Dwarven]
Companion • Dwarf
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
Elder. Each other elder companion is strength +1.
Response: If a Shadow card is about to discard your [Dwarven] condition, you may add a threat to prevent that.
"‘Am I right in guessing that you are the Glóin, one of the twelve companions of the great Thorin Oakenshield?'"

How's that? Perhaps I should try to expand the idea, giving the elder keyword to characters that it really fits - Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, Saruman, etc. Just guys who have been around a long time and are up to speed on things. Then create a whole new batch of cards revolving around the elder keyword. Maybe even a whole functional DC deck implementing the "veterans" of Middle-earth.

Bad idea? Good idea?

Tis interesting, and a good word. The thing is, the word fits Dwarves very well but not Elves or Gandalf so much. I had a thought about representing age on cards: keywords like First Age, Second Age and Third Age. Though in most cases in the game so far this differentiation is not relevant (obviously, the Lord of the Rings is Third Age), it could be something to be developed. :-k

I dunno, maybe I'm just cracking up.

Hmmm... interesting idea. I'll have to think about that.

I dunno, maybe I'm just cracking up.
This we already knew. :P

[3]Mauhúr, Uruk Chieftain [Isengard]
Minion • Uruk-hai
Strength: 9
Vitality: 3
Site Number: 5
Fierce. When you play Mauhúr, you may spot another [Isengard] minion to make that minion strength +3 until the end of the turn.
Regroup: Exert Mauhúr to add [X], where [X] is the number of [Isengard] Orcs you can spot.
"‘…Mauhúr and his lads are in the forest, and they should turn up any time now.'"

Not bad IMO. Text ties in nicely with the lore, and a good anti-move minion.

[4]Gandalf, Prisoner of Saruman [Uruk]
Minion • Wizard
Strength: 6
Vitality: 4
Site Number: 5
To play, spot Saruman and discard a card from hand.
Gandalf cannot be assigned to a skirmish. The move limit is -1. [Gandalf] events cannot be played. [Shire] culture tokens cannot be added or reinforced.

[2]Orcrist, Orc-biter [Dwarven]
Artifact • Hand Weapon
Strength +2
Bearer must be Thorin. He is damage +1.
Each time an Orc is played, you may discard a [Dwarven] tale to make that Orc strength -2 until the regroup phase.
"‘This, Thorin, the runes name Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver in the ancient tongue of Gondolin; it was a famous blade.'"

Dammit. These Wizards are a challenge.

[4]Saruman, Sharkey [Shire]
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 6
To play, spot 2 Hobbits. Saruman is resistance -1 for each minion you can spot. The twilight cost of each [Shire] card is -1.
Response: If Saruman's resistance reaches 0, place him in the dead pile and remove [4].
"‘So you have heard the name, have you? All my people used to call me that in Isengard, I believe. A sign of affection, possibly. But evidently you did not expect to see me here.'"

I hope he's balanced, but I'm not sure. He's a big help with getting your cards out for cheap, but rather susceptible to dying due to his text. Although if he does bite the dust, he's goes out with a bang, perhaps drying up the pool enough for that game-winning double to 9.

Old Took's card:
[1]Thorin's Map [Dwarven]
Possession • Support Area
To play, spot Thorin or 2 Dwarves.
Each time the fellowship moves, you may add a [Dwarven] token here.
Regroup: Remove 3 [Dwarven] tokens from here to play the fellowship's next site (and draw a card if you can spot an Orc).
"On the table in the light of a big lamp with a red shad he spread a piece of parchment...."

Lurtzy, I'm not even going to attempt to make an [Uruk] companion. It just doesn't work.

GTD's card:
[1]Pippin, Wizard's Aid [Shire]
Companion • Hobbit
Strength: 3
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 8
When you play Pippin, you may spot Gandalf and add [2] to remove a burden or a threat.
At the start of the regroup phase, you may discard Pippin to take a [Gandalf] card into hand from your discard pile.
"Pippin became drowsy again and paid little attention to Gandalf telling him of the customs of Gondor...."
