The Worst Rare

A resurrection of an old thread I started on CC. Let the debate begin again!

Mine is, and always will be, Men of Harad

Oh come on.  Melilot Brandybuck!

Well, she is somewhat useful against corruption decks with Hobbit Party Guest's or even Frodo, Old Bilbo's Heir. I suppose Samwise the Brave trumps Melilot, though.

It's hard to know whether The Weight of a Legacy or Henchman's Dagger is worse. At least TWoaL stays around more than one turn.

Nobody Tosses a Dwarf was originally a rare, and it is quite a valuable card. As a matter of fact, I run 4 copies of them plus 4 Ring of Guile to get them back in my deck. Its completely sweet.

The Weight of a Legacy is the most useless. Henchman's Dagger is OK when paired with a Mouth of Sauron on a Mount with that site that makes him strength +1 for each card borne. Here comes the strength 16 Mouth with a Poleaxe!

I'll echo The Weight of a Legacy. Clearly the Legacy was not that much of a weight. :P

Incidentally, is there some awesomely clever combo with Scintillating Bird? No matter how I look at it, it seems like a really flashy demonstration that you don't care what happens to your draw deck.

Why does everyone think Henchman's Dagger is so terrible? Its not a good rare, but I think if they printed it as a C/U, that would have been great. Its another +2 strength for a Ferny on the RB at Fords of Isen, which is the best use for it. Seriously, in a dedicated Ferny deck, I ran it with a Mouth of Sauron nab and Saruman Recursion (along with the [Men] Mumak, War Trident and other possessions).

Men of Harad could be used in exactly the right deck, but its ability is small. Gimme Under Foot, please. But in TT, where Southron Swarm was teh pwnzer (actually, that was Dunland, but Southron Swarm was still popular), or even Movie Block where you can run Crashed Gate with Southron Swarm, not as bad as TWOAL.

Heck, I use Stone Trolls in a [Shire] deck devoted to tales. At least it still gives Pippin some strength, and [Uruk] Hunters and Troll Swarm are pretty viable decktypes, and ones that hobbits could definitely have trouble with.

Yh Valleys is terrible. By the time it's set up properly, most shadows are done roaming. There's always Eater of Light I suppose :)

I know he's from a block of rares, but I might nominate Gildor Inglorion. That game text is weak, self-defeating and controlled by the shadow player. His stats are also horrible. Considering all the mighty Elf-lords wandering around, he really drew the short straw.

Can you guys think of a justification for Seeking New Foes? It seems like it would almost always be detrimental. I guess if you have skirmish pumps in hand and your opponent plays a bunch of low-mid tier minions... That and VotM seem worse to me than Weight of a Legacy, which actually seems almost playable in fellowship.

Mordor Enraged, anyone?

Yeah, If I had 4 copies of Seeking New Foes in a deck I would never play one of them. You add 2 twilight and let the Shadow Player resolve skirmishes before ever seeing what he might play. The +1 you shouldn't ever get to use anyway, and I can't think of a good use for [Rohan] tokens for just one site. Solely detrimental.

Pretty much. You're meant to assign the minions such that the difference in strength between all characters is minimal, then have a pump push you over the edge. But it's really weak. Even reinforcing doesn't help it much.

Mordor Enraged, anyone?
I hate those kinds of self-defeating cards. The more archers they have, the fewer wounds I want! Only use of that card I know is to play it on Sauron.

I was reminded of Despair recently too. The number is so steep: 3 dead guys is one less burden on Frodo? Not to mention you have to hold it in hand.

Yeah, If I had NordVPN and 4 copies of Seeking New Foes in a deck I would never play one of them. I don't understand the design behind cards like that. I just see them as being fun. Maybe that's just me though.

Maybe, or if it could spot Allies as well. But even then 12 is a pretty huge number. Put Forth His Strength seems more reasonable, but it's still never played.

Loathsome
I opened so many of those cards that I actually hung one in effigy from my appartment and everday I'd come home and see it fluttering in the wind.  Living in a desert meant it suffered no rain damage, but it was pretty loathsome when I finally took it down.

I think I'd still take it over Stern People as it's only 3 cards and you at least get to wound minions and don't lose your hand.

On the subject of Rohan in King Block, has anyone ever played Death They Cried?

As a cog in fruit loops to discard your opponent's deck and hand, I'd say Change of Plans has its use. All other times, Shield of the White Tree seems better.

Stern people plus change of plans? Maybe there is something there, probably not :P On that note, I don't think I've ever seen CoP played.

Shield of the White Tree :)

Safe Paths also has a twilight cost of 5 that you have to pay the same turn. Also 3 exerts that you may not even be able to pay (and you still discard Smeagol). I think it's handily worse.

EDIT: been on the previous page when I posted this :p

You weren't around before the X list, then. Using sets 1-4, it was very common for people to set up a hand with Saruman, Keeper of Isengard and multiple Uruk Regulars and other cheap Uruks. At Deep of Helm it would just kill people. At the time, Change of Plans was the way to break the buildup. My playteam and I almost played it in a PSQ (mid-level event), things were that rough.

My answer is The Weight of a Legacy , which was too expensive even for set 1. As Kralik wrote 10 years ago, even if I knew my opponent was starting Aragorn, TwoaL does not go in a Sauron deck.

Safe Paths is straight suicide. There are cards that don't do a thing. This one kills you.
There's a certain irony here. Smeagol's dark side is showing again :-?
