Title: Unhinged (LotR edition)
Post by: SomeRandomDude on May 26, 2008, 07:17:16 AM
All righty, in Magic: The Gathering, there is a set called Unhinged. Some cards are inside MtG jokes, but some cards are just plain funny...like this one. (http://ww2.wizards.com/gatherer/CardDetails.aspx?&id=74237)

LotR has a lot of parodies, but they don't usually work with the game. So, it is my mission to make balanced, playable parodies in this set.

I need some ideas for card titles, so pm me any.

[1] Rohirrim Chicken [Rohan]
Possession • Pet
Archery: Discard Rohirrim Chicken to make the Shadow player exert a minion.
When the Rohirrim ran out of arrows, they turned to other, odder tactics.

[4] Strength of an Orc, Brain of a Troll [Isengard]
Condition
Strength: -12
Spell.
To play, exert Saruman 4 times. Plays on a companion.
Bearer loses all gametext.
The amazing power of Saruman was quite amazing indeed, until one realized that his power seemed great only due to the incompetence of those surrounding him.

[3] Oops, Wrong Spell [Gandalf]
Event • Response
If a [Gandalf] spell is played, cancel that spell to take a [Gandalf] spell into hand from your draw deck.
"Ach! No! Don't turn into a frog! Dangit!"

[1] Puppy Dog [Gondor]
Follower
Aid- Flip a coin.
If the coin flip is heads, bearer is defender +1 and damage +1 until the regroup phase. If the coin flip is tails, exert bearer.
*yelp* *bark* *woof woof* *slobber*

I'll post some more maybe later.

What happens if the 2 spells are of different phases? Also seems rather overcosted. Funny though...

Actually quite a clever mechanic. I might steal it... ;)

Something like:

'Aid - reveal the top card of your draw deck.
If it is a Shadow card... If it is a Free Peoples card...'

LotR could do with some Unhinged! ;D

Okay, so this is now a set. I'm ready to kick it off...just as soon as I come up with some more guys.

Here's another.

[2][6] •Sauron, Really Overrated Minion [Sauron]
Minion • Maia
Strength: 1000
Vitality: 1000
Site Number: 5
Damage + 1000. Hunter 1000. Enduring. Lurker. Muster.
Sauron can't take wounds during the archery phase.
"Psh, just IB him."

Cards like Ithilien Blade convinced me that a keyword like "Hardened (May not be discarded by opponent's cards)" was needed.

Sauron should never be felled by a simple sword.

The point was wasting 26 twilight to maybe kill 1 comp of the freeps choice is a little overrated. If you need that, pack Greed, 26 twilight will go a lot farther. :D

Crammed a few more keywords on there and a counterproductive special ability, if anyone else can think of anymore worthless keywords, lmk.

Ambush 1000. Better hit him with What Are They?

Got a good laugh out of these. Moar!

I love the idea of Unhinged for LotR and my parody cards have always tended in that direction. I would go for a cycle of coin-flipping cards, I think it could work really well.

How about side games using twilight costs as numbers - eg. a side hand of poker...

[1] •Pippin, Bearer of No Intelligence [Shire]
Companion • Hobbit
Strength: 3
Vitality: 4
Resistance: (14)
Each time Pippin would be exerted, exert him twice.
"Wait...how did he get the ring again?"

[4] Gandalf's Amazing Telekinetic Powers [Gandalf]
Event • Response
Not Really A Spell.
If a coin flip ends the way you don't want it to, turn the coin over. That side is the new result of the coin flip.
A weighted coin looks a lot cooler when a wizard is pretending to control it.

Taking a page from MtG here...

[1] Our Market Research Shows That Players Like Really Long Card Names So We Made this Card to Have the Absolute Longest Card Name Ever [Gandalf]
Condition • Support Area
All ties in strength during a skirmish result in a win by the character with the longest title and subtitle.
Just call it OMRSTPLRLCNSWMTCTHTALCNE for short.

Let's see if I can bring this back.

[1] •Denethor, Firebomb [Gondor]
Companion • Man
Strength: 4
Vitality: 2
Resistance: 1
Maneuver: Spot a fortification and place Denethor in the dead pile to discard any number of minions with combined twilight cost 5 or less.
"He killed more in his death than he had in his life...which was really embarrassing."

[3] •One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor [Gandalf]
Condition • Support Area
To play, spot [Gandalf] and a [Gondor] man.
The move limit is +1.
At the start of the maneuver phase, spot a minion. That minion gains slow (this minion is discarded at the start of the regroup phase.
"You've got to RUN!!!!!!"

[1] Slow Wit, Slow Speed [Gandalf]
Condition • Support Area
Not Really a Spell.
Maneuver: Exert Gandalf to transfer this condition to a minion. Bearer gains lurker, loses fierce and cannot gain fierce, gains slow, loses all maneuver and archer special abilities, and is site number +1.
"Wow, Gandalf's stupidifying spell really works!" "No, its a troll you idiot."

As long as you make cards which reference not really spells! ;)

And you might want at least a little enforcement of some kind on One Does Not Simply Walk Into Mordor

Haha what a random thought but an interesting one, what are the odds he falls on a really important character who was the pinnacle of a certain battle or strategic maneuever and thus changed the fate of the war.

you know it certainly is an interesting idea....you know, the thing he fell off of was probably near the gate (looking at the picture)...maybe he killed an troll, thereby blocking the gate temporarily, so the orcs could not get through with battering rams to destroy the second circle gate before the dead men came...maybe if he hadn't fell off pippin and gandalf would've died...thereby frodo and sam probably would've died...the eagles might not have come to the black gate so the nazgul would've had some time to own...aragorn most likely would have died...and possible someone else...thereby the line of kings would've been extinguished...

good thing he fell off.

maybe if he hadn't fell off pippin and gandalf would've died...

Not that I care for Pippin, but yeah, like SOMETHING could kill Gandalf... Seriously, I love LotR, but from what I gather, RPG-wise, Gandalf could pretty much walk up to Sauron and, I don't know, DISPEL him or something, he was powerful as #$&*@!, one overpowered NPC, that's what he is!

Hahahaha...

Well, the Balrog did. The only reason Gandalf came back was because the Valar sent him back to Arda.

[4] •Gandalf, The Indestructible [Gandalf]
Strength: 8
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 10
Chuck Norris Powers (each time a minion is about to lose a skirmish, rip it up and burn it instead). Indestructible (this companion cannot take wounds).
"But we have one, more powerful than them all...bearing Michael Jordan's Sneakers, Chritopher Lee's beard, Samuel L Jackson's Coolness, And Chuck Norris' sheer Beatdown ability...seriously...be amazed."
