I was thinking that an exertion is a pretty nasty cost to wear the ring. If he’s exhausted (not so unlikely), then he can’t put it on.

Tough choice, but here I go:
1) #1 for an ingenious way to deal with low stat companions - throw them at Balrogs!

Okay, fair enough. Got to try and make a deck out of these guys at some point to see how useful they are, then I’ll report back.
