Well, looks like the voting is all but decided (suddenly-lucky number 13 ), but voting still goes until Wednesday, if anyone hasn’t gotten to it yet. Heck, I still need to vote!
For now, though, I promised that the next round would get underway before voting was over. I hinted at today, and today, we will indeed begin the next challenge.
As there were no eliminations the first round, all contestants are still in in for this challenge. And that challege is to design three old-school cards. The winner will have their cards inserted into my second set, The Road Ahead, centered around The Fellowship of the Ring, so please keep that storyline in mind as you design these. A few more qualifications:
- I would prefer they be built around Orcs, but I’ll leave that up to you. Being from FotR, there are other tacts you could take if you want to, such as Wargs or even Sauron himself. But again, I’d prefer Orcs.
- At least one of the cards must be a minion, and again, I would prefer two. I will be building the entire culture in the set around your cards, so give me a good starting point!
- Since I will, as I said, be designing the rest of the culture around these cards, they must work together in some way. They don’t have to be wrapped so tightly together you can’t seperate them or anything, but some synergy would certainly be nice.
- As before, please format these cards crisply and include lore.
If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.
There WILL be eliminations this round, so do your best. The exact number of eliminations I will keep a secret...for now.
Since this is a bit challenging, and we still have a lot of contestants, we will have a week-long deadline again. Please have your entries in by the morning hours of Monday, November 19th. Any entries NOT in by the deadline will be one of our eliminations, so don’t miss it! If you need more time due to vacation or whatever, we might be able to arrange that, but let me know ASAP!
And as always, have fun! |
Best regards, Dáin, Vice Aftokrator of the Chosen Ones

Old-school, eh? I’ll see what I can drag up from the depths of my memories... I’ve had some pretty nasty experiences with old-school . |

Quote: • The Balrog, Thing of Slime
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Damage +2. Fierce.
When you play The Balrog, discard all other minions.
Each time The Balrog loses a skirmish, you may exert him to add a burden and discard up to 3 cards at random from the Free Peoples player’s hand.
Assignment: Exert The Balrog twice to assign him to an unbound companion. The Free Peoples player may make The Balrog gain enduring to prevent that. “‘…stronger than a strangling snake.’”
I like each idea okay by themselves, but together it’s just too powerful, in my opinion.
Quote: • The Balrog, Strangling Snake
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Enduring. Damage +1.
While at an underground site, The Balrog is fierce.
Assignment: Spot Gandalf to assign The Balrog to an unbound companion.
“‘His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake. We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him....’”
Killer against decks with Gandalf, obviously, but kinda meh otherwise.
Quote: • The Balrog, Keeper of Dark Tunnels
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Damage +1. Fierce.
To play, discard a card from hand.
Regroup: Discard all other minions and remove to make the Free Peoples player chose to move again (if the move limit allows.) You may play the fellowship’s next site.
“‘In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazad-dûm: too well he knew them all.’”
I like this one a lot, actually, but I think it’s too costly for what you get. probably would have been better, and/or dropping that discard-to-play text.
Quote: • The Balrog, Creature of Slime
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Enduring. Fierce.
Each time The Balrog wins a skirmish, you may exert him to make a companion strength -3 until the end of the turn.
Assignment: Assign The Balrog to a companion he has already skirmished this turn.
“‘His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake.’”
I like the first line of text a lot, but the assignment ability is just nuts! The lack of damage bonuses nearly balances it out, but not quite, I don’t think.
Quote: • The Balrog, Thing of Slime
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 5
Enduring. Damage +1.
At the start of the maneuver phase, you may exert The Balrog to play a Shadow condition from your discard pile (or two Shadow conditions if you can spot a Wizard).
Regroup: If you can spot no other minions, heal the Balrog four times and discard him to exert each companion and make the Free Peoples player move again (if the move limit allows).
“‘In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazad-dûm: too well he knew them all. Ever up now we went, until we came to the Endless Stair.’”
I think I would have liked him much better if it were limited to conditions. The regroup ability is nice, but kinda tough to pull off.
Quote: • The Balrog, Terror of the Deep
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 13
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Lurker. Fierce.
The Balrog is strength +1 for each site on the adventure path.
The Balrog is damage +X, where X is the shadow site number.
“‘Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazad-dûm: too well he knew them all.’”
Nifty. I might have capped that damage bonus thing, but since it comes into direct conflict with The Bridge of Khazad-dum, it strangely probably balances out. I might have limited that to underground or mountain sites to be safe, lest you pair him with, say, Sirannon Ruins.
Quote: • The Balrog, Terror Of The Underdeeps
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Damage +1. Fierce.
Shadow: If The Balrog is at an underground site, exert him twice to play the fellowship’s next site (replacing your opponent’s if necessary).
“‘Thus he brought me back at last through the secret ways of Khazad-dum; too well he knew them all.’”
Love it. Not what I had in mind, but a brilliant way to do what he does. So balanced.
Quote: • The Balrog, Creature of Slime
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 14
Vitality: 5
Site: 6
Fierce.
While at an underground or marsh site, The Balrog is strength +3. Response: If the fellowship moves during the regroup phase, you may remove a Balrog in your discard pile from the game to play this minion from your discard pile or hand. Its twilight cost is -2 and it gains damage+1.
“‘His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake.’”
I think would have been okay, but I like the always-lurking aspect.
Quote: • The Balrog, Creature of Fire and Slime
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Damage +2.
Assignment: Exert The Balrog twice to assign him to an unbound companion with strength 7 or more. Unless the current site is underground, the Free Peoples player may discard 3 cards from hand to prevent this.
While The Balrog is skirmishing, skirmish special abilities may not be used (and if at an underground site, skirmishes may not be cancelled and skirmishing characters may not be replaced).
“‘His fire was about me. I was burned. Then we plunged into the deep water and all was dark.’”
Too convoluted, which kinda surprised me considering the author. I’d use him, certainly, as he beats up bigger companions and smaller companions (like discarding Hobbits) alike. But that’s just SO much text....
Quote: • The Balrog, Creature of Slime and Darkness
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 15
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Fierce.
While at a battleground or underground site, skip the archery phase.
While skirmishing a companion with strength 7 or more, The Balrog is damage +1.
The Balrog is strength +1 for each twilight token you can spot (limit +6).
“‘We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him....’”
I like the twilight token thing a lot, but he just seems to be lacking something.
Quote: • The Balrog, Fire Beast
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Fierce. Damage +1.
When you play the Balrog at Bridge of Khazad Dûm, the Free Peoples player must exert three companions.
Maneuver: Discard The Balrog to discard Gandalf.
“‘The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep.’”
Cool, but VERY specific. I also kind of wanted a slime Balrog....
Quote: • The Balrog, Strangling Snake
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 5
Fierce. Enduring.
While at an underground site, the Balrog is twilight cost -3.
Each time The Balrog wins a skirmish, you may exert him to prevent the losing character from being assigned to a skirmish until the regroup phase.
Regroup: Heal The Balrog twice to exert 2 companions (or each companion if you can spot 6 or more companions).
“‘His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake.’”
Like it a lot...but he’s too cheap. Should have been AT LEAST , and maybe with a slighter lower initial strength.
Quote: • The Balrog, Quenched
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 14
Vitality: 5
Site: 5
Fierce.
At the start of the maneuver phase, you may discard all other minions to choose an unbound companion with strength 7 or higher. Until the regroup phase, only that companion can be assigned to skirmishes.
Response: If a player reconciles while the fellowship is at an underground site, return this minion to its owner’s hand.
“‘...but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake.’”
This is pretty much death to whichever companion that first part targets, and makes a REALLY wicked combo with a couple Goblin Runners. Again, I like the fact you can recycle him, but in this case it seems too easy. Not that is matters, as this is about to be the winning entry....
Quote: • The Balrog, Thing of Slime
Minion • Balrog
Strength: 17
Vitality: 5
Site: 4
Fierce.
Response: If The Balrog wins a skirmish in which the character he was skirmishing was not killed, exert The Balrog twice to assign him to that character and begin another skirmish phase involving them immediately.
“‘Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him....’”
Eh...just seems too good, for the same reason as #4.
So, at long last, my votes are:
Entry #7
Entry #6
Entry #8
I have results tallied, but I’ll give people a couple more hours to vote if they haven’t already. Expect results to go up around 0830 EST. If you haven’t voted yet (especially if you’re IN the contest), do so now! |
