Awesome report, MH. I enjoy draft too - too bad I don’t live near Texas. Smile

My last game:

Type: 2-player Game
Format: Expanded
Players: A Friend and I
Decks: My friend was using a Gandalf culture deck, that used the Gandalf Ring-bearer, Radagast, Treebeard, Grimbeorn, and some Gandalf Men. His Shadow side was Sauron Orc Swarm. My deck was Noble Leaders / Morc (Morgul Orcs + Nazgul, for those who aren’t familiar with the term) Swarm.
Result: My fellowship got a very good draw, and my friend’s Shadow was having an awful day. His minions couldn’t put a dent in me. Therefore, he decided to double-move against several minions, and I was able to swarm him with several Nazgul and a bunch of cheap Morcs.

My last game was at the Texas TOC (Fellowship draft with two fellowship boosters, and two Realms of the elf lords boosters). My draft pack wasn’t anywhere near as good as the last draft, although I did wind up with a pretty focused shadow (archery plus regroup wounding).

Site Path: (All Foil)
Westfarthing
Weatherhills
House of Elrond
Great Chasm
The Bridge of Khazad-Dum
Galadriel’s Glade
Anduin Confluence
Gates of Argonath
Slopes of Amon Hen

Frodo, Old Bilbo’s Heir (Foil)
The One Ring, Isildur’s Bane (Foil)

Fellowship looked something like this:
Aragorn, King in Exile
Boromir, Son of Denethor
Gandalf, The Grey Wizard
Pippin, Mr. Took
Gimli, Dwarf of Erebor
Sam, Proper Poet
Legolas, Prince of Mirkwood x2
Haldir, Elf of the Golden Wood
Ranger’s Sword
Hobbit Sword
Frying Pan
Old Toby
Longbottom Leaf
Frodo’s Pipe
Bounder
We must go Warily
Hobbit Intuition
Depart Silently x2

My fellowship wasn’t anywhere near as pretty as before as I didn’t have the right Gimli or Sam (Gimli, Dwarf of the Mountain-Race, Sam Son of Hamfast would be the best to have. I had Gimli, Dwarf of Erebor and Sam, Proper Poet). It was still pretty focused though and had a few tricks with Gandalf and the Depart Silently x2 as well as Frodo’s Pipe to heal Boromir at key times after the site 6 sanctuary. +3 strength to Frodo can mean winning or losing the game. The biggest problem with the fellowship aside from having the wrong sam and Gimli was that my only Aragorn Signet companion aside from Aragorn was pippin! Worthless. So unless I could get aragorn his sword, he was just an 8 strength 4 vitality blocker. Gandalf was there for a couple things as he allowed me to get out both sam and Legolas for free with an exertion and to soak wounds. If he needed to go, he did. I think I dumped Gimli and Haldir quite frequently as they were just in the deck in case all my other companions died.

Shadow looked something like this:
Ulaire Enquea, Lieutenant of Morgul
Goblin Bowman x2
Moria Archer Troop
Goblin Marksman x3
Goblin Runner x2
Goblin Warrior
Isengard Shaman
Isengard Worker x2
Isengard Retainer
Isengard Servant x2
Isengard Forger x2
Uruk Soldier
The Trees are Strong

Overall pretty focused on outside the skirmish phase wounding which worked well. The cheap minions meant I was able to pull of swarms pretty easily as well. Their low vitality and strength was a bit of a problem as a number of people had Legolas, Son of Thranduil in their packs. Extra archery in the later sites is a bad thing.

Game 1 - Me vs Kyle Christen (San Antonio DAgent)
This was a really well played and close game. The lucky guy got a Legolas Greenleaf as his draft pack rare. Out of all the rare cards to get, that or Aragorn, Ranger of the North are the two golden cards. A person who gets one of those can win pretty easily as they can get a person out of many jams. He bid to go first and I chased him from site 1 to site 7 and kept up quite well. He was playing with big Sauron minions which were good for stops, but not great from the cost standpoint. He doubled from 7 to 9 and I wound up getting out enough minions to pretty much exhaust his fellowship with archery get Frodo up to 8 burdens (he had to put on the ring to prevent companions from dying) and then still get two minions on Frodo. Unfortunately he had a pump left on his Boromir and had discarded There and Back again, so Frodo with his Sword was an 11 strength to my 10 strength. Greenleaf was the deciding factor in the game as I had to use my enquea to exhaust him and then kill a companion in order to get the swarm big enough to get 2 on frodo. Good game and well played.

FL +1pt. 0/1 Score: +1

Game 2 - Me vs Cassie Latshaw (San Antonio Player)
Cassie is a pretty young yet very experienced LotR player, but doesn’t have a lot of draft experience. This wasn’t a cakewalk, but the game went pretty quickly. I won this one by running to site 9 where she couldn’t qutie get enough minions out to kill me. She had drafted some amazing cards (Saruman Keeper of Isengard and Shards of Narsil being two of them) and had a pretty good strategy utilizing uruks. Unfortunately, her deck was a bit too unfocused and she couldn’t draw into enough cards to do anything against my Aragorn with Sword and 7 other companions at site 9.

FW +3pt. 1/1 Score: +4

After seeing her deck and asking the size I went over the deck with her to get it down from 30-30 to 21-21 which really helped with her consistency. It was fun to be able to look at what she had drafted and know that she knew good cards to draft but didn’t have the draft deck building experience (19 to 20 minions, Companions and free conditions and possessions on the free people’s side and 20 cards max per side). I’m pretty sure after tinkering with her deck she went on to win her next two games. That was nice to hear.

Game 3 Me vs. Roderic Powell (Former Houston DAgent)
This was a pretty lopsided game most of the way. Rod had managed to pull a pretty good elf-gondor deck that started Legolas Son of Thranduil and Gimli, Dwarf of the Mountain Race. On turn 1 he managed to get out Aragorn + beatick and Arwen, Elven Rider plus an elven bow. He stayed ahead of me most of the way except for when I doubled through the sanctuary at 6 to his site 7 to avoid my Anduin Confluence and keep my bounder. He hadn’t been that effective at getting wounds on me up to that point, although in the double he did force me to suicide my sam to save some wounds in the long run. Since I made it to 7 ahead of him he was forced to either double to get ahead of me and win or try to kill me with his minions. He singled into 7 from the sanctuary, keeping his fellowship small. I singled into 8 (Anduin Banks) and was very thankful that I hadn’t ballooned up like I had thought about doing. I stopped when he got out a few solid minions that would make it difficult for me to survive a double. At 7 he ballooned up to 9 companions (Arwen, Legolas, Aragorn, Gimli, Sam, Frodo, Gandalf Friend of the Shirefolk, Dwarf Guard, and Pippin) and then moved into his Anduin Banks where I was able to play minions to get the Archery total up to 11 and play Enquea and a few more minions that would eventually stay on the table. He was faced with a tough choice after that: Move into 9 with a clean enquea and a couple other minions, quite a few exhausted companions and additional archery headed his way or stop and take his chances that his minions would be able to kill me. While he was making his decision, I reconciled into about 5 more minions with more than enough twilight to play them all. He decided to stop and my fellowship moved into site 9 with with enough companions that he wasn’t able to get enough out on frodo to kill him.

FW +3pt. 2/1 Score: +7

Game 4 Me vs. Dan Peek (Austin player)
This was the last game since we only had 16 players and were just looking for a top 2 for the Day 2 byes for worlds. This game was pretty good, although it was a bit frustrating as my fellowship refused to fire until I was at site 7 or 8. Dan’s draft pack was pretty poor in that it didn’t have an enquea or nertea in it. I held back on playing out a bunch of companions until he had gone all the way through his deck and hadn’t played either yet. My shadow was pretty ineffective against him except that it caused some pretty good stops. I was able to bluff him into not doubling to keep up at site 5, but other than that the deck didn’t fire very well. I wound up running to 9 and killing off a couple of companions (gandalf and boromir) who were supposed to be dead at the end of the film, but that was about it.

During the game, his nasty Exert to wound Sauron orcs were doing a pretty effective job of getting wounds that would stick. At one point after I had used frying pan to get a second wound on one of his orcs that had exerted to wound me, he asked why I did that since I wasn’t planning on moving on and the result was the same. I had to answer that sometimes it is just good to be in control. Plus a dead minion makes it more likely that I would move on so I could try to bluff him into discarding fellowship cards to reconcile into a better shadow hand. I’m not sure that it worked, but oh well.

FW +3pt. 3/1 Score: +10

So I wind up in the 3/1 slot along with a number of other 3/1 players. According to the Strength of Schedule that we calculated, I wind up in third place so I miss out on the bye into worlds. Oh well. It was a lot of fun getting to play. I beat out one of the other Austin players for third place by one Strength of Schedule (SoS) point which was pretty funny. He always seems to have bad luck (losing a TOC by one SoS point last year, 4th by 1 point this year etc.) at TOC’s. Tough luck Evan Razz

It was a great tournament and a lot of fun to see all those players again. I have more draft product so I hope to do another draft (probably in Austin) soon! I’ll write then how it goes.

Regards,

Me vs Redoschi
Oz format. My Into the West Archery/Evil Men Archery vs his Gondor Roaming-Wounding/Evil Men Archery.

I kept playing a mediocre amount of archers, and did ok with my shadow but not great. His didn’t come together either, and I ended up having the upper hand with my vast amount of characters and healing. We both single moved to 7, and then i doubled to 9. He couldn’t kill a single companion Razz

My win.

Merrick: is the deck size minimum 20/20 in draft tournies?

Yep but for Booster draft only. Your draft pack has 29 cards in it (14 Freeps, 14 Shadow and 1 random rare) so you need to draft a minimum of 6 cards per side to have a legal deck. One advantage is that even though you often only have 40 cards, you get to reshuffle once and since you have hopefully filtered out most of the free people’s cards, it is practically (if not all) minions on the reshuffle.

If you are playing a sealed (starter plus 3 boosters that you don’t draft from) it needs to be a 30/30

It was a 5 player game. My enduring nazgul killed off 4 of them by like site 5. Then, when it looked like a game-over for my last opponent, I decked-out. lol He ran without any opposition, and all I could do was take a beating from his Sauron minions. I lost Think
First time that kid every beat me.
