Okay, so two aspects of the Lord of the Rings mythology have always perked my ears.

*Ahem*

First, in The Two Towers Gandalf recounts his tale of battling the Balrog in Moria to the Three Hunters. When he comes to the part where he was "underneath the world," he states that he dared not recall what he saw there.
My imagination runs wild with that idea in mind. Here we have Gandalf, one of the most informed and intelligent beings in Middle-earth, and even he didn’t expect to see what he saw.

Secondly, and this also comes from something Gandalf said (except this time during Return of the King), he mentions that Sauron is only an emessary of evil and that another dark lord would eventually come to assume power.

---

Both of these things I think we could expand on and come up with our own Fourth Age and Beyond Mythos. We could create a new dark lord to challenge whatever Free Peoples remain in Middle-earth. A dark lord that calls upon the nightmarish demons and ghouls found beneath the Misty Mountains, as well as the scattered Orcs and Trolls.
And to match the new dark lord, Gondor once again rises to the challenge. Except this time the realm of Men is strong again. Minas Tirith is expanded and mighty, and the line of kings Aragorn restored is flourishing.
Elves are gone. Dwarves are dwindling. Hobbits are, well, Hobbits. Another Maiar (Gandalf or one of his kin) could be sent to help Men. The Ents would likely still be around, and maybe even reproducing if they’ve finally found the Entwives.

Anyone up to this task? If we can make a cohesive storyline with appropriate backstories, I’d love to start a DC contest from what we create.

Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. Razz

Here’s the first passage (from The White Rider of TTT).

"We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. They were not made by Durin’s folk, Gimli son of Gloin. Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day."

And the second passage (from The Last Debate of RotK).

"{Sauron} will be maimed for ever, becoming a mere spirit of malice that gnaws itself in the shadows, but cannot again grow or take shape. And so a great evil of this world will be removed.
Other evils there are that may come; for Sauron is himself but a servant or emissary. Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule."

At this point I’m working on finding a name for my new dark lord. I’ve already decided that she’ll, well, be female.
Also, she will come from the unknown lairs beneath Moria. Seems like a logical place to set her, seeing as Tolkien never elaborated on it.

What I’d like to start doing is coming up with the "nameless things" Gandalf spoke up. Different nasty beings that she can amass into an army.

Ideas?

Okay, so I’ve been looking at some Quenyan dictionary I downloaded, and came up with a few names for her.

Moraina, which means (roughly) "clad in black"
Indimorë, which means (roughly) "bride of darkness"
Undumiel, which comes to meaning something near "daughter of the abyss"
Vanyanë, meaning "beautiful, yet not beautiful"

I like the last two the most so far.

Worked up some Sindarin names.

Dínathren, meaning something like "Woman both under and within shadow"
Móraenil, close to "black goddess"
Raugofuin, something like "demon of deep shadows"

I like the last two the best, though Móraenil sounds most Sindarin to me (I suck at Sindarin).
