Ok, next one up for the line’s Gagnut, who only sent me 2 cards. That means he gets a 0 on the other 8 entries, but as you may notice, he’ll still be ahead of quite some people. The lesson? STRATEGY, guys! "Oh, I can’t make it, too much..." Do what you CAN do. Do one card, whatever, it may be enough to buy you time until you can commit to win this one! Well, without further ado, let’s start, shall we?
The Ring, The Creation of Sauron

If Bearer is exhausted, Bearer can not take wounds.

Major problem I had with this one, aside from reading "responce": the second line of text. It just makes this Ring too powerful. However, I LOVED to see someone toy with the statsmore than the usual, very creative.

I mean, where can I start? "bearer must be..." on a Follower? I’m stuck between finding that creative or horrible. Not to mention totally lacking a twilight cost! Terrible one, indeed.

Ok, next one on the line is CarpeGuitarrem (actually, I shouldv’e posted this last night, but I’m taking some heavy pills, and crashed asleep early... Sorry about that), so let’s see how he fares, shall we?

Ok, let’s see what I think is wrong with this first one. For starters, chained to the old concept of remaking cards as they are. It’s you standard 4,8,4 aragorn (costs 4, has 8 strength and 4 vitality). No problem with this, really. However, let’s face it, his ability is kind of underpowered, given he belongs to the earlier sets, I just can’t see very much use aside from combo’ing out with Sam, Proper Poet for some serious skirmish cancelling, although there’s nothing wrong with it. What bugs me is the twilight cost. He doesn’t fit very well with the hobbits, as he takes up all the space in the starting fellowship, while he could have some interaction either by lowering the cost of hobbits (or one hobbit), or havi HIS cost lowered, let’s say, for each hobbit you can spot in the starting fellowship? That being said, his ability is waaay too limited and straghtforward for an uncommon, I mean, Aragorn, Heir of Elendil seems better, and it’sa common. One last thing, I couldn’t quite connect the flavor text with the card or it’s title, only VAGUELY with the ability. Kind of disappointing, coming from "the master of flavor texts".

My only concern with this one lies with his cost. Seems too powerful in a swarm, only having to spot one, single wound on ANY character.
•Charge of the Rohirrim

Now, this card threw me off balance. While I think it should be borne by a single companion, granting HIM the strength bonus and only able to wound a minion HE was skirmishing, thus not having to be unique, and making it for a nicer uncommon, I also think that this would change the feeling of the card so much it would knock it down to common, due to the initiative drawback. So, I went ahead and gave CG a vote of confidence on this one.

Ok, what seems wrong with this one? Any wild guesses? The twilight cost is the first thing that bugs me. This is a Rare. Sauron (the good one, at least) is a R+. Both’d be hard to get your hands on, not to mention PLAYING Sauron himself, so, WHY the high cost? Sauron doesn’t REALLY need the strength bonus, and adding threats can be easily covered with Orcs from RotK, so no player would want this card in their decks! It could: a) have the stats lowered to become an uncommon, thus "teasing" players to go after a Sauron; b) have a lower cost, or at least let you exert sauron/make him take no wounds (to let him stick aroung long enough to use it); or c) have another line, like: "Every time a character is killed in a skirmish, add a burden", making it better. Other than that, I liked the main idea on this card, a solid 10 on creativity alone!

Quite frankly, this is a poor attempt at "evolving" Delving. I liked the idea and the ability, that I did, but I like to think of Starterslike those "build around me" cards, or cards that are vital for the deck’s strategy. This one costs too much, is useless in the beggining, and even more if the opponent is playing with no underground sites (as dwarves lack site manipulation badly), an costs too much. Delving only costed and ONE exertion, to ent you THREE cards RIGHT WAY. Just didn’t like the feeling on this one.

CG’s worst card, by a landslide. Common doesn’t have to mean "bad". The card does nothing AND has a cost. Also, flavor text doesn’t quite link to the card’s idea, and unless it’s text said something about "bearer is strength +1 for each wound on each character in its skirmish" it SHOULD do something aside from just sitting there, clogging up your possession slot on the minion. TOO limited.

I’m not very fond of one-shot allies, I think you should have some way to heal him, although it doesnot have to be present on this very card, so no problem here, just saying it, for the record. My problem with this one it that it’s "Swarm-Free", meaning you’ll get to use his ability NO MATTER WHAT (ok, short from Tower Assassin, but who uses this nowadays, huh?), making it too powerful to be an uncommon. I know, there’s the whole "allies don’t get to start in the fellowship", so you’d actually have to draw him, but that just makes him even more useful, since you’ll almost always use him late game only, wrecking the opponent’s strategy. With the ARB’s around, I also think it should have "to play, spot a hobbit" on it’s game text, but that’s just me.

Now this is what I meant by a "build around me" card, after all, hobbits DO have some site manipulation, and Ents DO have some great sinergy with them. Now, how can simple mistakes mess up a great submitance! I mean, take a look at this card, it’s GREAT! Problem is, it’s TOO great for an uncommon. I mean, being able to transfer it to ANYONE for absolutely NO drawback, at a measly cost of ? Not even a spotting requirement to play? And making a vitality-happy Ent able to cancel ANY skirmish? Not to mention, the minion-discarding ability is ALSO overpowered, I mean, a RECURRING source of discarding minions for a single exertion? C’mon, it’s broken in almost every way! But, then again, it WAS a neat idea, making an eagle!

However, I gave you creativity points because it’s a UNIQUE thing: a Free Peoples condition that cripples THE OTHER Free Peoples, but it’s got a major hole in design, so it wouldn’t be played at all as it is.

FANTASTIC start from Turin06! At first glance, you may think: "well, yeah, but this card does WAAAAY too much for an uncommon", but notice the subtlety! The abilities are actually quite small, making him more of a "splashable" character than a powerhouse. Even with a full movie Fellowship, he’s what? Not THAT big. And that considering NO ONE dies, since ONE character dead AUTOMTICALLY disrupts one of his abilities! Great job, Turin! Just missed a flavor text on this one!

Problems with this one? Simple: Too many abilities (and good ones)for a considerably low cost, and at uncommon, meaning this guy would pop up every now and then in decks, since he has no spotting requirements. Also, followers usually add burdens to be transfered. Now, I’m not saying we can’t change that. However, changing that would make THIS aid cost what? RARE! It’s VERY rare for a follower to be able to adi by some measly twilight tokens.

If this card was an Event • Response, then it should be AT LEAST rare, but since the Free Peoples player gets to prepare (he’s, after all, SEEING the card in play before usage), it’s a VERY cool uncommon. Great judging on that. However, it’s a simetrical version of Hosts of the Last Alliance, thus, losing some SERIOUS points in creativity.

Now, this is a VERY subtle card, so let’s crack it. Why the high cost? Because there’s no spotting/exerting requirement, making it a more confortable early drop. And why the ability? Simple, again. Since the Palantir sees across great distances, it lets Saruman PREPARE earlier, so he can RESPOND to any strategy (like calling for help for someone, or going to fetch something powerful from a distant land) the Free Peoples might try. Then again, most of these cards do this on the Fellowship phase, when there are no minons out yet, so this card loses some of its purpose. But I liked it very much!

Stuck on the same old concepts, the Ring’s activation and post-effect is pretty standard, so nothing new here. However, theamount of burdens it add is LITTLE compared to the HUGEStrength bonus it provides, unless you HAD to be wearing the Ring to get the bonus. As it is, too broken.

Even in the new adventure path design, Bilbo’s Study SHOUL represent one of the earlier sites, and a safer one, for that measure, so it shouldn’t add so much twilight.
FINAL GRADE: 7,024
Turin06 is a good competitor, however, he missed a part of the challenge altogether, reason that made me take away 1 point from his FINAL GRADE. He didn’t quite grasp the concept of "making cards look from different sets". I didn’t see ONE SINGLE CARD from one of the "fallen" cultures, or a companion or ability referring to a signet, or maybe an old-school ally or site... However, he STILL qualifies for this challenge’s gp! |
