And macheteman is three for three!
From The Fellowship of the Ring, Chapter IV ("A Journey in the Dark" -- they are wandering through the Mines of Moria):
"Rope!" muttered Sam. "I knew I’d want it, if I hadn’t got it!"
You get as many guesses as you want, just try to be reasonable about it.
And for the record, the prizes for these questions are foreign-language rares and foils, not R+ cards -- although, those might be on the menu for a later challenge...
Question 4:
Who are the Onodrum? |

Yes indeed -- four for macheteman.
Question 5:
Do Balrogs have wings?
For fairness’ sake, this will be the last question tonight; I’ll ask some more at a different time of day.
Note that the answer to this question will NOT just be "yes" or "no" -- I want reasons and sources! The winner here will be the most thorough answer, not necessarily the quickest. |

Yes. The book clearly says it spread its wings. (Continue reading, the actual answer is unknown, but they had wings )
The Lord of the Rings wrote:
...suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall...
However, there was a debate that arose from this, due to an earlier reference
The Lord of the Rings wrote:
"His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings."
However, in the later reference, the term wings was apparently used in a non-methaphorical sense and thus the Balrog had wings. In the earlier reference, it may have been referring to another set of wings the balrog appeared to have had, a set of wings made from shadow , or Tolkien made an error (I hate to admit it, but he was human).
However, there is still another alternative that the Balrog did not have wings, but the word wings was used metaphorically in both instances.
And finally, another alternative. The Balrog is consider a Maiar, which is a spirit capable of changing appearance (hm....). This is the same of the wizards and Sauron, so...posing a twist, could the balrog appear to have wings at one point, and not at another?
Thus, in a fair and unbiased analysis, it is unknown, but I believe that Tolkien’s intent was to portray the Balrog with wings. (In other words, I’m biased.)
One thing we are certain of. If they have wings, they do not use them. Because if they could use their wings, the Balrog could have flown away in the duel with Gandalf, instead of falling. However, there a many winged flightless creatures even in the real world (Kiwi, Ostrich, some species of ants, etc.)
And I wrote this myself, with the debate part and exact quotes off of 5 second research from google, wikipedia, and the encyclopedia of Arda.
Oh, and in the movie, it had wings.
P.S. My reasoning is a mess. I’ll edit it tomorrow when I can think. *yawn* |
