He’s good... but it’d take a really, really weird deck to use him. Site control and threats? Sounds like an and [Uruk-Hai] mix to me.

Okay, I think it’s safe to move on. If anyone still wants to review Smaug, feel free. But for now....
Dáin’s DC Duos #92
One of the biggest concerns so far has been playing a behemoth like Smaug. He’s pretty expensive. Here’s a couple cards to help with that...as well as a couple bonus sites that help out. Enjoy!
Breeze From the Black East
Event • Maneuver
Weather.
Spot no threats to play an or minion and add two threats. Then, if you can spot a weather condition, add .
“...it was ominous and dreary even in the light of morning. Now it was lost and gone, blotted in the dark.”
Tailor-made for Smaug, Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities, adding two threats right off the bat to bump his strength up by 4. And with another weather card around (there are several in my sets), you get a little twilight cost reduction thrown in for no additional charge!
Desolation and a Dragon
Event • Shadow
Play an minion; its twilight cost is -1 for each card you can spot. The Free Peoples player may add 2 threats to prevent any cost reduction for that minion.

And now we have a straight-up twilight reduction method. Sure, it requires an / pairing, but it just might be worth it. Either you get a twilight reduction OR you get two threats for Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities to play with again!
And now those sites I mentioned....
Lake-town
Site 8 [LA]
River. Dwelling. The roaming penalty for each minion is -2.
Smaug’s Lair
Site 9 [LA]
Underground. Shadow: Remove a threat to play Smaug from your draw deck or hand; he is twilight cost -5. |

Duly noted. The cost is intentional for each. I can see maybe removing it for Breeze From the Black East, but I’ll wait and see what others say.

I really like them both, and I must say, unless I was building a deck that needed exertions, it would be a tough call to choose between the two. The weaknesses and limitations seem to counter the abilities.
Although, where’s the mention of the first subtitle? Specifically "Chiefest". Or is that just another word that I haven’t been introduced to before?

Definitely interesting. I like the additional cost at the end, and the ability to prevent multiple uses of the event at once. With the fact you can only play it once, I think it would work at ...

Now there’s an interesting cancellation ability... On the one hand, you probably wouldn’t play it with only one card out,. But what happens if you don’t have enough twilight if you can’t spot a card? Would it make the card a twilight reducer or add 2 threats card?
Maybe it should just say ’add 2 threats to cancel this.’ - which would allow you to play the minion anyway, or not.

I’m not quite sure if the wording is right. Minions with a site number of 9, maybe? Has there been a previous reference to a specific site number?

Yeeowch! A very nice card, though. I like it. Pretty cool. Except, should read "if you can spot a weather condition, add ".

Thanks for the reviews, guys. I made some changes to Breeze From the Black East, but it seems people were pretty happy with the others, so I left them alone. s are on their way, BW and CG!
I’m really happy that there’s already been EIGHT different reviewers in this thread, including some that don’t usually review the Duos. Lets me know I’m doing SOMETHING right.
The things that were going to be tying me up this morning got postponed to Monday. That means Monday morning will be busy, but it’s good news for today, because with Duo #92 already getting three reviews, we’re moving on!
Dáin’s DC Duos #93
Yesterday’s cards dealt with playing Smaug and reducing his cost. But what about if Smaug isn’t in your hand? Kind of unlikely, since you’ll probably be playing him late in the game and not have much (if any) of a draw deck left, but it’s possible. Here’s a card for a scenario just like that, as well as the other Smaug-related weather card, one that works very well with today’s first card.
I’m also feeling generous with this unexpected time I didn’t think I’d have this morning, so I’ll spoil a less specific weather condition that’s not specifically Smaug-related (I WAS going to save it for when I posted the rest of the culture), but it works beautifully with today’s weather card and yesterday’s Breeze From the Black East, so I’ll post it now. Enjoy!
Came From The North
Event • Shadow
Spot a Dwarf or Man and remove a threat to play an or minion from your draw deck.
“‘The first we heard of it was a noise like a hurricane coming from the North, and the pine-trees on the Mountain creaking and cracking in the wind.’”
The Gathering of the Clouds
Event • Maneuver
Weather.
Exert a Dragon or a Orc to make the Free Peoples player choose to either add 2 burdens or 2 threats.
“Still more suddenly a darkness came on with dreadful swiftness! A black cloud hurried over the sky. Winter thunder on a wild wind rolled roaring up and rumbled in the Mountain, and lightning lit its peak.”

Condition • Support Area
Weather. To play, exert an minion.
Each time the fellowship moves from a sanctuary, dwelling, or underground site, you may remove X threats to exert X companions.
Maneuver: Play a weather event from your draw deck. Discard this condition.
“A bitter easterly breeze blew....It swirled over and round the arms of the Mountain into the valley, and sighed among the rocks. After their long time in the stewing depths of the dragon-haunted caverns, they shivered in the sun.”
Wham! First you can play Threat of Oncoming Winter, then use it to play either yesterday’s Breeze From the Black East (preferrable if there’s no threats at the time) or today’s The Gathering of the Clouds, optionally preceeded by Came From The North to get Smaug out a phase earlier.
Of course, they work pretty well independently, too. Threat Of Oncoming Winter has some nice benefits when you keep it around, though the volatile weather patterns can cause it to spurn off another weather event (literally) without a moment’s notice...and since it doesn’t discard itself until AFTER the event is in play, weather events with text like "spot a weather condition" still trigger.
The Gathering of the Clouds certainly doesn’t need Threat Of Oncoming Winter or any other weather card, for that matter. It’s pretty nice even on its own.
And Came From The North doesn’t NEED to get that lost threat back with a card like The Gathering of the Clouds. Nice to have? Sure. But not necessary.

I would drop the cost to 0.

The one problem with the current wording is if you go up against something like Faramir, Bearer of Quality. Maybe it could be changed to "The roaming penalty for each minion is -2."

Wow, powerful! I’m thinkin’ that you might want to up the cost to 3, or maybe 4 with a toil 2.

The maneuver ability can just be worded "Discard this condition to play a weather event from your draw deck."
The first ability is really powerful, so you might want to change it to:
Each time the fellowship moves from a sanctuary, dwelling, or underground site, you may remove X threats to exert X companions.
And then you could drop the cost to 1 or 2.
for a great bunch of cards (and BTW, my GP for reviewing the thread hasn’t come in yet... not to be picky, but I’d like to get up to 300 )
