Rarely had Adalard seen any travellers from far out, although the Prancing Pony often had Men and Hobbits from furthur off. But Elves and Men from far away places were rarely seen.
And a Dwarf! It wasn’t rare to see a Dwarf, but it wasn’t common either. The rangers, however, Adalard knew of. Every so often, a Ranger would wander into the Shire to check up with Shirriffs, and Adalard had been on that duty a few times.
In the Shire, weapons were rarely necessary, so the Shirriffs generally walked around unarmed. But when their travels were sure to cause them to wander further than Bree, they had a few swords from early battles. One of those, Adalard had himself.
"Well, I’ve got this," he said, pulling a sword out. It was, as most hobbit things are, small for most of the gathered, but only slightly larger than would be normal for Adalard. "It hasn’t seen much use since the Wolves attacked, so it could probably use some repair, but it hasn’t been too bad." |
Our time here is ending...
What did you want to see before the end?
It will be made in the Request-a-card Set #1 (name ideas also welcome ). |

Ryle stood and his eyes flashed around the room before turning to capture Curubethion in a stare. Ryle lifted the bow off his back and set it on the table. His eyes didn’t waver. A few paces forward brought him in front of the ranger. He drew his sword without flourish, those he saved for the battlefield. He handed it to the man. It was a hand-and-a-half sword, keen and straight. The hilt was wrapped in black leather. A fuller ran down three-fourths of the blade, and set in the pommel was a black onyx.
Curubethion fingered the edge, and threw a glance at Ryle and then to his right. In a flash the sword was swinging sideways, it struck a wax candle, and cut it in two. The top-half fell to rest on the severed bottom. The flame flickered but seemed unconcerned.
The ranger smiled, "you have a good blade, where was it forged?"
Ryle’s eyes lingered on the candle a moment more, and then turned to lock on Curubethion. "Dale. My father had it forged for me, and I received it on my 13th birthday. It was the first man-sized sword I ever owned, and hope it will be the last."
The ranger handed the blade back to Ryle, who took the sword and sheathed it without breaking his stare. |

"Ah, loosen up, lad!" came a voice from behind.
Ryle and Curubethion turned to see the Dwarf approach from the bar, a mug of fresh ale in his gloved hand and a spot of foam from the last on his beard. "Don’t mind him," he said with a laugh, turning to Curubethion. "Master Ryle has always been a little...rough around the edges."
"You are one to talk, Rorin," Ryle retorted with a barely-concealed smirk. It had been several years since he had last seen the Dwarf that had taken him under his wing. Ryle’s father had never been entirely comfortable with the friendship and mentoring the Dwarf had occasionally offered young Ryle, but was in the Dwarf’s debt since Rorin had saved his son from a run-in with goblins from the north at the age of 10.
Rorin chortled in his ale and gave a wink to Ryle, then turned back to Curubethion. "Speaking of rough edges, Master Curube... uh, Cerubuth... er...."
"Curubethion," the ranger said.
"Right." Rorin set his nearly-empty mug down and reached behind his back, drawing with one hand an axe that would be difficult for Ryle (or perhaps even Curubethion) to heave with two. "Here is my ’equipment’, Master... Ranger."
Curubethion took the massive, dual-bladed weapon and gave it a quick look-over. "A Dwarven battle axe, favored by those in Khazad-dûm."
"And the Iron Hills," cut in Rorin.
"Indeed. I have not often visited that realm." Curubethion paused at the ornate symbols along the edges of the blades. "This axe is exceptionally well-made, I must say."
Rorin nodded in appreciation. "You can thank my father for that. He was one of the finest craftsmen of my clan. This was the final axe he forged before...." The Dwarf trailed off, lost in thought for a moment.
"I have heard of the workmanship of Balir," Curubethion said with admiration as he handed the axe back. "I trust it is handled as befitting such a fine weapon."
"With luck, Master Ranger," Rorin replied, his gruffness and confidence returned, "you shall find out before long." Nearby, Ryle smiled with memories of his own, understanding quite well how capable Rorin was with the heavy axe.
Curubethion nodded and moved on. |

Celebthir was more than slightly intrigued by the ranger’s request. It was very unusual to see so many of his kin in a small Mannish town, even more so when he recognized low prince Legoles here (although the prince probably didn’t recognize him.) After all of the others had shown their blades, Celebthir pulled out his knife. The handle was green, and the blade smoke-blackened to avoid telltale glimmers. A Mirkwood scout must always be careful to avoid detection.
"Interesting weapon," the ranger mused. "Can’t say as I’ve ever seen one quite like it... Not much decoration, but it appears quite able to get the job done."
Celebthir agreed. While decoration was nice, in his profession, the bare essentials were better. |

I’m sure if anyone’s stumped for a weapon (I was, as the Shirrifs don’t usually carry weapons or armor, but decided to go with an older standard weapon), that the others would be willing to help...
(And, I’m sure a few would make it as if it were for their character, within whatever guidelines you provide - the others would probably realize that if yours is better than theirs, it would win this round of the contest and would make it under/overcosted)
I do like, though, that I’d be the only one that could be in the starting fellowship with Curubethion (assuming that it was in a standard deck) - The rest of you are too dangerous |

Arthail drowsily drew his blade. After drinking so much beer, he couldn’t see straight and was beginning to feel a bit woozy.
"Here’s my *hiccup* sword, mister... *hiccup*"
And then with a thud, Arthail fell to the floor. Blood flowed out where his own sword had pierced his chest.
"Ouch!" said Curubethion with a bemused smile.
Barliman Butterbur later sold Arthail’s corpse to Bill Ferny for twenty silver pieces. The sword hangs in the common room, as a lesson against drinking too much.

...?
Well, I guess that’s AC’s way of saying he changed his mind about this whole thing. |
