1 •Déagol, Bearer of Gifts Gollum
Companion
3 Strength
4 Vitality
8 Ringed Resistance
Ring-bound.
If Deagol is the Ring-bearer, each time he is assigned to a skirmish, wound him or add 2 burdens.
Maneuver: Discard a Gollum condition from hand to draw a card. If you are at a river, remove 1.
"Give that to us..."

A Deagol RB! SWEET! Anyway, balanced, a small drawback, a weak ring-bearer. Somewhat high resistance, though, for an ARB.

2 •Sam, Bearer of Office Shire
Companion • Hobbit
Strength • 3
Vitality • 4
Ringed Resistance • 9
While Sam bears the One Ring, he is resistance +1 for each follower you can spot. Manuever : Spot a companion bearing a Shire follower and add a burden to heal that companion (or heal him or her twice if he or she is a Shire companion. Limit once per turn)
Samwise was the Mayor of the shire for many of the year after the war of the ring.

Okay this is so absurd its not even funny. Who wouldn’t use him over Frodo? Rolling Eyes This is so OP. Well...you got the story-line right, Sam the incorruptible. But then add a crazy healing? All corruption and wounding decks die on spot!

Dwarven ●Durin III, Dwarven Ring-Master
4 Companion,
Str 8
Vit 4
Ringed Res 5
Damage +1, Hunter 2 If Durin is the Ring-Bearer, each time the fellowship moves you may take a Dwarven card in hand from your discard pile (or two minions with Munter).
R

Tough ring-bearer, damage +1, decent resistance, hunter bonus, card recursion, no drawback, can you say, overpowered? Even more so than SoP!

As a note, I’d like to put a comparison up (based on the closest ARB):

Deagol vs Smeagol-
If not the Ring-bearer:
-Deagol costs 1 compared to Smeagol’s 0
-Deagol has no to play ability, Smeagol adds a burden.
-Each loses an ability
--Deagol can be assigned to skirmishes without having to wound or add burdens.
--Smeagol can’t use his regroup ability.
In any case:
-Equal Strength
-Equal Vitality
-Deagol has 8 resistance, Smeagol has 7 resistance
-Both are Ring-bound
-Neither have a race
-Each has an ability
--Deagol can discard Gollum conditions from hand to draw cards and possibly remove twilight (during maneuver phase).
--Smeagol kills an unbound companion each move.

Sam (Office) vs Sam (Need)-
If not the Ring-bearer:
-Office doesn’t get boost for followers
-Each cost 2
In any case:
-Each have 3 Strength
-Each have 4 Vitality
-Office has 9 resistance, Need has 5 resistance
-Need gets a resistance boost for each Hobbit
-Each has an ability
--Office adds a burden to heal a companion with a Shire follower (or a Shire companion twice if it qualifies). Once per turn.
--Need exerts and transfers his follower to discard minions during regroup.

(If the Ring-bearer, Office is better unless you have 4 other Hobbits plus the number of Shire followers. Or a great ability to heal and double+ move but a difficulty with minions.)

Durin III vs Gimli-
If not the Ring-bearer:
-Gimli costs 2, Durin III costs 4
-Each lose an ability
--Gimli can skirmish without adding burdens or threats
--Durin III can’t get cards from the discard pile when he moves
In any case:
-Gimli has 6 Strength, Durin III has 8 Strength
-Gimli has 3 Vitality, Durin III has 4 Vitality
-Gimli has 4 Resistance, Durin III has 5 Resistance
-Each is Damage +1.
-Each has an additional ability
--Gimli gets resistance boost for his damage bonus
--Durin III has hunter 2.

(If the Ring-bearer, Durin III is better unless facing a quick corruption deck that doesn’t rely on skirmishing the Ring-bearer - Either way, Gimli’s only got 2 advantages: one if they aren’t used if Ring-bearer and the easy to pump resistance, while Durin’s is a bit harder)

In short, there are a variety of Sams of varying usefulness. Bearer of Office’s resistance is simply too easy to boost, even compared to Sam, Bearer of Great Need’s - even when splashing, and with a decent burden removal is a quick healer for any culture. The advantage of the cost for the maneuver ability is that the Shire followers generally add burdens to transfer to the companion. So, it is usually, at the best, add 2 burdens to heal a companion.
Whereas Durin III is much better Ring-bearer than Gimli, bearer of grudges but without the ring, would (almost) never be used, for preference of Durin III, Dwarven Lord. (The only case is if you needed a support Dwarven hunter)

So, SoP

Well, it basically came down to use as ring-bearer and use as other companion.

As Ring-bearer, it was debatable (except against force assign to Ring-bearer/swarm and corruption*) - but outside being Ring-bearer, all Durin III, Dwarven Lord would need is a Dwarven Axe and he’d be just as high strength as Durin III, Dwarven Ring-master (against a non-hunter) with higher resistance, and ability and would (if you have 2 Dwarves) cost less (and without, cost the same). Only against minions with a high hunter bonus would it be preferable (as in, the minions that would lose without their hunter bonus).

*In the forced assignment/swarm, Durin III was definitely the better Ring-bearer, while against corruption, Sam (obviously) was.

And I had a feeling that this would be the only way I’d stand a chance of moving on...
