Silvarin awoke slowly, a slight pain in the back of his head. He imagined this was a ’hangover’, although not a bad one. Elves could hold their liqour far better than most men or dwarves, and besides, Silvarin hadn’t had too much beer. Not enough to try dancing, at least.

He stood up, an gathered his belongings back into his pack. The party would probably set off soon...

Tuilin had been one of the few not to engage in the drunken reverie, and instead had slept some and then taken watch. the coolness of the night with only the noises of animals had been as intoxicating as any alchohol. But without the hangover Tuilin was feeling refreshed and invigorated. He had done some maintenance on his weapons during the night, as well as his own personal workout, he felt more alive then he had in a long time. the company was getting up, and a strange sight they looked, most of them clutching their temples, squinting eyes etc. They would have to move, but the effects of their party who hold them back today. Tuilin shook his head chuckling lightly, it was a strange sound coming from him.

Ectheow was among the less impaired, but he had been undeniably tipsy the night before. He would have to be more careful. Most of the effects of his sweetend ale had worn off as he and the Dwarf had talked long into the night, while Rorin had shown him how to wield an axe, as a weapon and a tool.

He rubbed his bruises where Rorin had blugeoned him. A superior axeman indeed.

Echteow piled his belongings into the small pack he kept, and wandered over to the edge of the woods, listening for any sign of life aside from their company.

No dark wolf-pups yet, he thought grimly, walking back to the ashes of their fire, passing a groaning and blushing Adalard. "You do not dance poory," Ectheow commented. "But then, that is compared to a lead-footed dwarf."

Tuilin and Ellar stood watching the party gasthering their possessions, appearing rather pleased with themselves for not drinking any of the ale.

"Meh," he muttered to himself. "Maybe they were right, though. A dancing dwarf is not a pretty sight...."
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.

Dirthon drew his sword swung at the air a few times. His shoulder gave him no more pain. Sheathing his sword, he blinked at the brightness of the morning sun.

He walked to the fire, where Rorin, despite the thick dew, had managed to kindle a small blaze. After warming his hands for a few minutes, Dirthon accepted a plate of cold mutton from Ectheow.

The other members of the group were gradually gathering their things together and eating a hasty breakfast. Tuilin, Celebthir, and Ellar were already prepared for the second stage of their adventure.

Ellar chuckled softly to himself as he watched his companions shake their heads and rub their temples. "Good morning to you, master Rorin. How are we feeling today?" He called out playfully to the dwarf who was groaning quietly as he packed his possessions. "One more word out of you, young rip, and I will personally feed you to a dragon." Ellar laughed.

Turning away from the dwarf, Ellar spied out Curubethion. He nodded towards him. "How are you this morning, Curubethion?" he said, striding over to him. Curubethion nodded, acknowledging Ellar’s greeting. "Where are we off to this morning?" Ellar asked. "Further north." came the blunt reply. "You seem tense." "Yes, I am worried about the outcome of this mission." The ranger turned to face Ellar. "I don’t not know if we will all come out of this alive." Ellar nodded. "Yes, that is the risk you take." "Yes, it is a great burden on my soul, I feel responsible for all the lives in this company." "Do not worry, my friend, this quest is for the good of Middle-Earth. You are doing the right thing." Curubethion smiled. "Thank you my friend. Now, please excuse me, I must plan our next trek." The ranger turned and left Ellar.

Legoles smiled as he watched the others pack, he did not approve of drinking, but thought it humorus that others did, he quickly packed his things and went over and crouched near the fire, Silvarin also came over soon, Legoles said, "and how is my fellow elf this fine morning?" Silvarin gave him a look then replied, "Quite well thank you, and how are you?"
"oh I’m fine, I got a good bit of practice last night, and some comedy,"
Silvarin sighed and said, "yes well it’s over,"
Legoles chuckled then said, "well I wonder where we are going?"

Dirthon waited uneasily as the rest of the companions finished gathering their things. The sun was climbing in the sky, and the trees were quivering in a steady breeze from the west. The sky was cloudless, save an occasional wisp that hastily blew away.

Rorin was sitting on a log by the remains of the fire, stamping his feet impatiently.

"We should not stay here," Rorin said gruffly. Dirthon nodded.

"The sun may be warm and the breeze refreshing, but something is restless in me. My memory is still haunted by... by the phantoms," said Rorin, his voice dwindling to a hissing whisper.

"I am unwary also," Dirthon replied. "I am puzzled why Curubethon is lingering here."

Rorin grunted, lost in thought. Wargs were nothing new to him...they roamed freely around both Erebor and the Iron Hills just as they did here. But the phantoms....

He had heard rumors of such spirits roaming the caverns of the Lonely Mountain, the souls of the many Dwarves that had been slain by the arrival of the old worm Smaug. In Dale, too, were tales of the dragon’s victims among the men of the once-ruined town, still roaming the streets of the city at night. But never had Rorin imagined such things to actually exist. Flesh and bone were one thing, no matter how many teeth or claws or spears it bore. But the memory of the seemingly undead bearing down on him and his companions...it turned his stomach to icy stone. There was a reason he had been content to leave the phantoms to the Elves and his new ranger friend.

Yes, Dirthon was a fine man, as far as rangers went. In Rorin’s experience, such men were secretive and reclusive, and didn’t take much time for anyone but their fellow rangers, especially Dwarves. Curubethion and, to a lesser extent, Duinihir showed flashes of that. But Dirthon was open and welcoming; not even the men of Dale had ever joined Rorin in singing songs of old, whether they knew the words or (as Dirthon had tried valiantly to hide) none of them at all.

Ectheow had tried his best too, though in that case, Rorin thought with a smirk, it had probably been only the ale talking (or, rather, singing). The Rider of Rohan was the first of his land Rorin had met before, and if his personality was any indication, they were a stern people, not entirely unlike the rangers...but then again, not unlike Durin’s Folk either, a thought which drew another smile. The man was rather talented with an axe, certainly the finest the Dwarf had witnessed. He hadn’t let on about that last night, of course, doing what he could to give Ectheow some important, and sometimes painful, lessons: never overswing and leave yourself vulnerable, yet make sure your feet are firmly planted and swing hard enough to land a solid blow. Try not to hit anything on the backswing unless absolutely necessary, as only a good backswing can set up a crushing strike forward. “And sharpen this blade!” he had told Ectheow. The serpentine axe was a fine weapon, but the formal minstrel had not cared for it as deserving such a well-crafted axe. “Your axe will never fail you as long as you do not fail it,” he had chided. Perhaps he had been too hard on the lad, both with his words and some of his blows, but anything worth imparting was worth imparting right. It had, after all, seemingly sunk into Ryle.

Speaking of whom....

“I said, ‘good morning, Rorin’.”

Rorin blinked and looked up at his young friend. “Aye. It is indeed a fine morning. Are you ready then, lad?”

“As I’ll ever be,” Ryle replied, setting down his gear and sitting next to the Dwarf.

“You worried, Ryle?” Rorin asked, looking closely at the man.

Ryle forced a tight smile, but the worry lines did not disappear. “I have been through many dangers since leaving Dale. I have faced goblins and wargs and even the occasional troll or stone-giant from the Hills of Evendim. Yet where we are heading, there seems to be a worrisome gathering of all these, and worse. What fell purpose guides them? Is it one of the Nazgûl calling them? Or perhaps even the Dark Lord himself?” Ryle shook his head. “Wargs and goblins, and even these spirits, I know. But this is different. There is great evil at work here, and not knowing what we will find is eating at me.”

Rorin nodded. “Aye. I’ll let you in on a little secret, lad,” he said, leaning forward. “I’m a little worried myself. But this is good company,” he said, waving his arm around the camp as everyone began to gather in the clearing around the fire. “These are able warriors and fine companions, from the rangers,” he nodded to Dirthon, “to friends from afar like Ellar and Ectheow and Adalard, and even the Elves...from time to time. And you, Master Ryle,” he said, smiling. “You I put all trust in. You have grown to be a brave and capable warrior. I am proud to fight alongside you as we trek together toward the unknown.”

“Thank you, Rorin,” Ryle replied. “There is no Dwarf or man or Elf in all of Middle-Earth that I would rather have at my side.”

“Then let us move on and get this over with!” Rorin said, standing and leaning on his axe. “The morning grows long, and I am restless.”

Celebthir, Legoles and Tuilin had been talking amongst themselves, telling the tales of their adventures. Legoles was the youngest by a good 500 yrs, and still relatively inexperienced. He was a good fighter though, just not incredible by elven standards. They had set up 3 small targets on trees, and walking 100 feet away from them proceeded to have a little contest. Each elf had 3 arrows, they would see who could fire the most accurately. Tuilin waited Ellar was nearby watching he yelled go and it began, In a single fluid motion Tuilin drew an arrow and nocked it to his bow, Drawing it back in another motion he sighted in a split second and released, he didn’t even look to see where it hit just continued firing. When he was done he looked to the side, Celebthir’s last arrow thrummed into the target, and legoles was drawing his last. They all walked forward inspecting their targets, Tuilin looked at legoles’s, "you have good marksmanship for one your age, but I suggest you stick with your sword in close quarters combat until you perfect your draw" Celebthir walked over "exquisite marksmanship Tuilin." " And yours too, I was raised with a group of elves that sends 2 out of three men out as ranger’s. You spend all your spare time practicing skills you would need." Celebthir nodded and all 3 of them retrieved their arrows and finished packing up.

Duinihir, whom none had noticed wake, crept near the elves’ supplies. Snatching their bows, Duinihir crept away, sprang up, and began shooting rapidly at the target with one of them. The elves, who were not used to being caught unawares, sprang back and grabbed for their bows. Laughing at their confusion, Duinihir speedily let loose a rapid string of arrows, each of which penetrated the target through the center. Retrieving the arrows, Duinihir turned to the elves handed their bows back, and left, laughing

Duinihir joined the main band in packing, and prepared to leave.
