Rorin was off trying to find a babbling brook he could hear nearby to wet some leaves and clean his soiled armor, and Ellar had excused himself to seek out Curubethion again, leaving Ryle and Silvarin sitting on a log, talking about the Men of Dale and their history with eagles, thrushes, and other birds.
That was the situation Adalard Bolger found when the Shirriff of Whitfurrows wandered onto the scene. He had seen an odd bird meandering through the woods, sometimes flying in spurts and sometimes just hopping through the leaves, probably looking for food. Adalard had never seen such a bird before, and was curious to see where it might be going. He was quite surprised when the bird, a small mouse in its beak, flew right over to the log where Ryle and Silvarin were sitting and hopped up next to them.
“Um...Mr. Ryle,” he said, pointing.
The pair stopped and looked over, then down at the bird, then back at the Hobbit. “Yes?” Ryle asked.
“Aren’t you afraid it might...DO something to you?” Adalard asked.
“I doubt it,” Ryle replied. “He’s sort of my pet.”
After the things he had seen over the last several days, that didn’t phase Adalard nearly as much as it would have in the past. “A pet bird?” was all he said, nodding a little. “And what sort of bird is it?”
“An eagle,” Silvarin informed him.
Adalard’s eyes lit up. “I have heard of eagles!” he said excitedly. “They are great birds that soar around the mountains. They once carried Mr. Bilbo Baggins for many miles during one of his adventures, I have been told!” His eyebrows furrowed a bit. “But...how could that carry a Hobbit? Is it a baby?”
Ryle smiled wide. “You are talking about the ‘Great’ Eagles, Adalard. They’re a bit different. Aeglirnen is...” he looked down at the bird, who chirped up at him, “...still great,” Aeglirnen screeched approvingly, “but not quite the same.”
Adalard blinked. That didn’t make much sense to him, but again, that wasn’t the first time that had happened on this journey. “I see,” he said simply.
Suddenly, Rorin burst onto the scene, puffing a bit, with axe in hand. Dirthon was behind him, hoisting his sword in one hand and a strange new grey bow in the other; his face was a bit pale. Ryle and Silvarin stood, Adalard jumped in alarm, and Aeglirnen screeched and flew a short distance away.
“What is it, Rorin?” Silvarin asked.
Only the Dwarf noticed the Elf had used his name for the first time. He opened his mouth to speak, but realized he was a bit winded from sprinting here and waved his hand to Dirthon instead.
“The creature is gone,” the ranger explained. “The ground where its body laid is covered with an icy chill, but the Warg itself has vanished.”
“Aye,” Rorin said, taking a deep breath. “I found that stream I mentioned,” he said to Ryle, then looked around the rest of the group and finished, “and when I was on my way back, I passed by the clearing where the icy beast had gone down. Everyone else was off talking or shining their swords, and no one was there to see the beastie was just...gone!”
“So you didn’t see it leave?” Ryle demanded. “Rorin, did you see it?”
The Dwarf shook his head. “No, lad, I did not.”
“There was no trail,” Dirthon added. “No blood or ice or anything to indicate it had moved on. Other than the ice where it fell, there was no way to tell it had ever even been here.”
“Well where did it go?” Adalard asked rhetorically, searching the treeline nervously with his small sword drawn.

CG, if you need/want me to change this, I certainly can, but I figured a bit of suspense would be good with such an odd creature. It seemed to go down awfully easy, and I figured you had more in mind for it and its kind. |

Northern River
River. Battleground.
While you can spot 6 companions, each unbound companion is resistance -2.
While you can spot four minions, each unbound companion is strength +1.
~~Site 5: Northern River~~
The Dúnedain furrowed his brow, looking at the spot where the creature had vanished. "Let’s go. I don’t know what happened...we must keep on! We can’t stay in one place for long, and I know of a place that we can go to for refuge...Swiftly, out of the woods!"
And they obeyed, feeling the ice-cold wind around them. Some began to stumble as they ran onward, and Curubethion winced. "Keep them moving! Something has taken hold, I suspect...I don’t know what is happening-keep them moving! Run! Run!"
And howls reverberated throughout the woods. With a desperate charge, the fellowship broke out of the trees, and into the wide air. But the howls continued. Swiftly, Curubethion ran north, north and away from the woods. And they followed. Hearing the howls around them. There was something...something following them.
"Hurry-if we can only cross the river..." Curubethion said, pointing forward.
The water that he pointed at was rushing swiftly. But before they could reach it...four forms appeared between them and the river. Icewargs, like the one that had already attacked them. With a fierce howl, they bounded forward, too swift for arrow fire. And then they were upon the fellowship.
"Stop them!" shouted Curubethion.
~~Mission: Stop the icewargs!~~
During the regroup phase, the following card was played:
Icy Shadow
Event • Regroup
Spot a minion in the discard pile to make each companion with Resistance 5 or less strength -1 until the end of the turn.
And then the following minions and condition were played after a double move into Site 5:
Too Swift for Arrows
Condition • Support Area
To play, exert a minion. Each Warg is strength -1 and cannot take wounds (except during skirmishes).
Exert Fearsome Warg.
Fearsome Icewarg
Minion • Warg
Strength: 12
Vitality: 3
Site: 3
Damage +1. Enduring.
Darting Icewarg
Minion • Warg
Strength: 6
Vitality: 2
Site: 3
Response: If another minion is about to take a wound during a skirmish, discard this minion to wound a companion in that skirmish.
2x of this guy
Ferocious Icewarg
Minion • Warg
Strength: 9
Vitality: 3
Site: 2
Lurker. Fierce. This minion is strength +1 for each minion not assigned to a skirmish.
And you’re going to be making Fellowship: events, to get ready for the Site 5 fellowship phase! |

I have the perfect idea for the next sites card! And let Dain take the big warg. I’ll have a few suprises in store for it.
One of the wargs, small but swift, charged amidst the party quickly. Silvarin was ready for it. Drawing his sword, he rushed towards it. He made a mighty swing, but the warg clamped its mighty jaws upon the blade. Suddenly, it became to cold to hold, and Silvarin nearly dropped it, but for a rush of magic that lept through his arm and out his fingers, up his sword and into the warg’s waiting mouth. Yelping, it leaped back. Silvarin took the opportunity to give it a cut across its shoulder. It turned towards him and charged, now with a slight limp, but Silvarin was too fast. In a moment, the warg lay dead.
Silvarin is 8/4/5, with hunter 1. The regroup event makes him strength -1. He skirmishes Darting Warg. The warg is also strength +1, if I’m right about that... anyways, Silvarin’s sword discards 2 cards to exert, then the Warg (7/1) takes a wound and dies.
After all the fighting is done, Silvarin will reveal a bit of his past to the party. Should be fun, eh? |

Celebthir groaned as the shapes materialized on the riverbank, and again when the arrows bent away from the track as before. But he knew his duty. Seeing the mage spring towards one of the smaller wargs, he did the same. As the creature oozed its ice and died at his feet, he wondered briefly why arrows couldn’t harm them and cold steel could.
Celebthir (7/4/5) vs. Darting Warg (5/2/3)
Celebthir exerts to play Knife-work, then heals.
Darting Warg loses the skirmish and dies.
"I told you we should have built a fire!" he called. "That’s the only way to really slay these creatures." With his mind, he probed the power around the warg’s remains and began to smile. "That’s what it was," he whispered. "They shall not evade my arrows again."
Card coming. |

Since it’s a double move, the fellowship phase at site 5 is skipped, correct? I’ll go ahead and post my piece and then add in my DC when everything is worked out...
Dirthon gazed ahead at the creatures that barred their path to the review. Two of the smaller Wargs bounded toward the fellowship. Silvarin faced the first one. He swung his blade, but the hideous Icewarg caught the sword in its teeth. Silvarin sent forth a blast of magic, and the beast yelped and loosed its hold on the sword. The Elf picked up the blade and attacked the warg again, this time killing it.
At the same time, Celebthir was battling another Icewarg. After a brief skirmish with the creature, the Icewarg fell dead at his feet.
Rorin had his axe in hand and was rushing toward the biggest Warg of the bunch.
Dirthon pulled his sword from its sheath. The blade shone like a pale flame. “We will make them fear us!” the ranger shouted. Dirthon stood his ground as the creature rushed at him. Just as the beast reached him, Dirthon jumped to the side and stabbed at the Icewarg. His sword pierced the creature’s chest.
With a yelp, the beast jumped back and rushed at Dirthon again. The ranger sliced at the beast’s neck, sending forth a spew of ice and blood. The hideous beast fell dead at his feet.
Dirthon 9/3/7, plays Courage of Numenor, 10/3/7, plays Sword Strike, 13/3/7 damage +1.
Ferocious Icewarg, 9/3, pass. Ferocious Icewarg takes 2 wounds, 9/1.
Ferocious Icewarg fierce; 9/1.
Dirthon 10/3/7, pass. Ferocious Icewarg takes a wound and dies.
2 tokens are added to Fragrance of Ithilien. |
I had to put something here. |

As the icewargs bore down on them, Rorin shivered, and only partly from the cold. The first of these creatures had been unsettling enough; the sight of four of the them charging the company chilled him to the bone.
But his companions were in danger, and even if these wargs didn’t seem to stay down forever, Rorin was not going to sit back and let others possibly get hurt while he stood back in irrational fear. “I will not dread these spirits and unearthly beasts anymore,” he said silently. “No more!” he repeated loudly, unsheathing his axe and rushing forward.
Nearby, Ryle stood side by side with Ellar among and the rest who guarded Curubethion, positioned directly between the creatures and Adalard. “Rorin,” Ryle called. He knew his friend feared these otherworldly creatures, but saw Rorin making a beeline for the biggest of them anyway. Ryle took a step forward; the Dwarf was in over his head. “Rorin!”
“Just a moment, lad!” Rorin bellowed as he charged into battle. “Stay there...I’ll handle this!”
“NOOO!” Ryle shouted. Curubethion took his arm and shook his head, but Ryle only nodded and, with a desperate look to Adalard, followed Rorin as quickly as he could.
The Dwarf ran right past three of the icy creatures as Silvarin, Celebthir, and Dirthon met them in battle, slashing and hacking with their blades. Rorin barely noticed them, focused intently on the fourth and largest warg, which let loose a blood-curdling howl. “Bring your ugly face to my axe, beastie!” Rorin shouted in challenge, raising his weapon and swinging.
The fearsome icewarg took the blow as Rorin charged past, and the blade went deep into the side of its body...so deep that the axe was wrenched from the Dwarf’s hands. With an enraged snarl, the beast whirled around to face Rorin, who stood in shock. The warg seemed completely unharmed despite the axe impaled in it, and roared at him again.
Then out of nowhere, the eagle Aeglirnen appeared and dived at the creature’s head. It didn’t do much, of course, but the icewarg turned and snapped at the bird as it flew off, giving Rorin the opening he needed. He dove onto the warg’s back and grabbed the shaft of his axe, wrenching with all his might. But he could not seem to get it to come free.
The warg had no intention of giving him the chance. It shook its head from side to side, and raised up on its hind legs. Rorin clutched at the axe, but felt his grip slip away, and he fell. As he hit the ground, he heard a clang next to him, and rolled slowly over, a look of defeat on his face. But it quickly turned to a confident smile...the sound had been his axe. It had come free! He grabbed it and looked up to see the enraged warg bearing down on him. He rolled aside just as its frosty claws came down where the Dwarf had been only a moment before. Rorin crawled a short distance away and climbed to his feet, brushing ice out of his beard and settling into a fighting stance.
But he knew it was pointless. For the first time he could remember, the Dwarf had bitten off more than he could chew. This was a fight he could not win.
He looked over and saw Aeglirnen flying back towards the rest of his companions. The other icewargs seemed to be down, and Ryle was darting between them, shouting. It was apparent he was coming to Rorin’s aid...but he was too late. He had surely sent the eagle, which was the best he could do, but it had only delayed the inevitable.
Rorin smiled, turning back to the creature. “So this is how it ends,” he said softly, nodding. “Very well, beastie. Do your worst!” He raised his frost-encrusted axe defiantly. The icewarg growled softly and prepared to accept the challenge.
But then something happened that made both him and the warg pause. Rorin’s axe began to glow, and then the edges of the blade erupted into blue flame.
“Now, Rorin!” called a familiar voice. “Strike!”
Rorin couldn’t comprehend what had just happened, but there was no sense in doing anything but what he’d just been told. Before the warg could react, the Dwarf roared and landed a heavy blow. Once again, the blade went deep...but this time, the effects were readily apparent. The creature fell back, and glowed with a bright light of its own. Rorin had just enough time to take a step back before it suddenly shattered, flecks of snow and ice shooting out in all directions. Rorin covered his eyes to shield them from the flash and the icy chunks, and by the time he looked back, the creature was simply gone.
Rorin just kept staring, still trying to take in what had just transpired, when a hand came down on his shoulder. He whirled around, axe in hand.
“Easy, Dwarf,” the other said.
Rorin blinked. It was... “Silvarin?”
The Elf simply nodded, then looked past Rorin’s shoulder as Ryle finally arrived. “Rorin!” the man said, relieved. “Are you all right?”
“I’m...I...think so, lad,” Rorin replied. “What was that?” he wondered aloud, looking down at his axe. It was back to normal...the glow and flame had disappeared as quickly as they had appeared the moment he had landed his final blow. Ryle simply shrugged, but Silvarin had a knowing look on his face. Rorin couldn’t help but notice, and squinted at him. “You know something you’re not telling us, Elf?” he inquired.
“Oh, nothing,” Silvarin replied with a slight smile. “Nothing at all...Dwarf.”

Actually, I think that you were a 15 strength, since I played Courage of Numenor. Ah, what does it matter.
A well-written piece, Dain. Now CG just needs to clarify what type of card we need to make... |

EDIT: Just noticed you all beat me to it. Drat.
Duinihir had been lurking in the shadows, waiting for his moment to strike. Seeing all the others speedily dispatch the wargs, Duinihir stepped out of the darkness to the remains of a warg. Determined to see what power these wargs possessed, Duinihir thrust his sword deep into the Warg’s heart. The warg, shattered with a huge clash that thrust Duinihir backwards.
"What power is it that makes you work?" asked Duinihir to himself. Noticing that Celebthir was also examining the wargs, Duinihir walked over to him... |

Fixed. Guess I didn’t need Aeglirnen, but I’m too lazy to go back and change it now, so ah well.

Yes, but he also said that we double-moved. Hence, there wouldn’t be a fellowship phase; it would just skip from regroup to Shadow. |
