Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. Razz

Actually I was talking about the new ithilien blade/hunters.
Ithilien blade looks fun. I’d hate to be on the receiving end of it.

Yeah me neither.

I played with myself, using Southron Savage for the first time-and it rocks! 12 goes to four strength 11 fierce minions!!

Gondor/Southrons
This proved to be sturdy, with plenty of conditions to get rid of minions. The Southrons totally took the stage, though! As I mentioned above, Savage rocked the day. Red Wrath did no good against the exerting mounted Rohirrim, but threat wounding with Cast Unto the Winds was amazing. I had the fellowship down to a three-wound Frodo, and then finished it off.

Rohan/Isengard Uruks
One of the big parts of this deck was Alive and Unspoiled. It was able to completely whittle down my hand on two occasions! The Rohirrim, although they managed to win some skirmishes, fell to minions like Southron Fanatic, with its automatic wounding. In addition, they had two hard breaks, when they failed to draw any minions. One lucky break was getting Herugrim early on, along with Theoden. But they couldn’t hold up at all.

Nope, I don’t play LOTR online. I use a different program. Although it has fewer players, the games and cards are free, and you can make any decks you want.

Go to www.winnieinternet.com/games/lotr to join the league!

Getting the thread back on topic:

Last game I played was a fellowship draft, getting in some practice for the San Antonio TOC this year (it will be fellowship draft with 2 Fellowship Packs and 2 Realms Packs). I drafted with two other people, so it wasn’t exactly representative of a drafting pod, but it was good to get a feel for the cards that I could potentially see.

Wound up with the Dwarf/Aragorn fellowship paired with Isengard/Sauron wounders and Sauron trackers.

After the draft my deck looked like this:
Aragorn King in Exile x2
Sam, Son of Hamfast x1
Boromir, Son of Denethor x1
Gimli, Dwarf of the Mountain-Race x1
Fror, Gimli’s Kinsman x1
Dwarf Guard x2
Bill The Pony
Hobbit Sword x1
Ranger’s Sword x1
Dwarven Axe x1
Old Toby x1
Rumil, Elven Protector x1
Melilot Brandybuck, Merry Dancer x1
There and Back again x1
Answering the cries x1
Delving x1
Seek and Hide x1
Here Lies Balin, Son of Fundin x1

The idea was that every card in the Fellowship half of the deck would wind up being played out so when I reshuffled I would have a deck that was all minions. The conditions were primarily there because they had minimal cost (Answering the Cries, no spot requirements, free condition that plays to the support area = good card in draft even if you can’t use its ability). The dwarf guards were there as speedbumps and to exert for Delving and here lies Balin son of Fundin. The Old Toby was just for card cycling. Seek and Hide is a great card if you can’t draft armor run into an opponent playing uruks. It can mean life or death of a key character.

The shadow was very similar to the following (I am working off of memory, so I may have the card quantities messed up a little):
Orc Scouting Band x1
Orc Soldier x1
Orc Assassin x2
Orc Ambusher x1
Orc Scout x2
Ulaire Nertea, Messenger of Dol Guldur x1
Isengard Forger x1
Isengard Retainer x1
Isengard Servant x2
Isengard Shaman x4
Isengard Worker x2
The Trees are Strong x1
Under the Watching Eye x1

The shadow half was a cheap swarm that focused on getting out one more minion than they had companions to double-team the ring-bearer since hobbit swords and pumps are hard to come by in draft. The other thing that it could do very nicely was cause lots of wounds in the regroup phase with the isengard orcs. I often held onto the The Trees are Strong until I had a hand full of Isengard orcs and pop it in the regroup phase after using the regroup special abilities of my three wounding orcs. It was not uncommon for a fellowship to be completely exhausted moving into site 6.

For draft you are supposed to bring a ringbearer (Frodo, Old Bilbo’s Heir is my choice just in case I draft a Bounder or some other good ally) Ring (The One Ring, Isildur’s Bane is the only real choice as it has the best flexibility) and a site path. My choice usually looks something like this:
1) Westfarthing
2) Weatherhills
3) Ford of Bruinen
4) Great Chasm
5) The Bridge of Khazad-dum
6) Galadriel’s Glade
7) Anduin Confluence
Cool Gates of Argonath
9) Slopes of Amon Hen

I generally use Weatherhills over any other site because it gives the highest twilight, which will be necessary if I am going second. Ford of Bruinen is a chancy call, but since every draft pack comes with at least one nazgul it can be nice for a couple of free wounds as long as I am fairly well set up. Another choice is House of Elrond as it generally won’t help anybody. Great Chasm again gives the most twilight for any site four, helps out the archery draft pack and is underground so I don’t usually fell the effects of it as I often start Gimil. Galadriel’s Glade doesn’t help or really hurt me or my opponent, so it is a pretty neutral site 6. Anduin Confluence is there to get rid of any of those pesky allies that my opponent has played. I also generally hope that they don’t draw into them by site 9 if they are ahead. Gates of Argonath is the highest twilight cost site 8 and only has a minimal down side. Plus it can allow you to potentially double if you are behind whereas you might be stopped by the other popular site 8, Shores of Nen Hithoel. I chose Slopes of Amon Hen as my site 9 due to the large pool of isengard minions that are available in this draft format. I might consider switching it out to Emyn Muil because fierce at 9 = good.

I bid 5 to go first and start with Gimli and Sam and hope that I can get one of my Aragorns in my starting hand.

I played both other people with this deck and beat them both soundly. My fellowship is pretty hearty, never getting above 5 companions for fear of Enquea and taking the site path pretty slowly. My minions manage to mangle my opponents both times and I win both games by overwhelms at site 9. 7 strength 5 or greater minions on 5 companions (no sam) for 13 twilight means a dead Frodo at 9. Beautiful.

One opponent was playing a Trust Me as you Once Did fellowship with only four companions (bad pack and draws) paired with big minions that were scary enough to keep me from doubling, but not scary enough to do any real damage. My other opponent got the Aragorn/Legolas draft pack with a moria Archery/orc/small uruk shadow. He was able to throw a decent amount of Archery out every turn with Legolas, Son of Thranduil, but not enough to kill enough minions to double very frequently. Very fun times in a semi-random environment.

I love draft as it has a tendency to make you take a look at strategies that you normally wouldn’t use and cards you would never use in a regular game. So much fun. If you would like to come out to the Texas TOC in San Antonio on the 27th you can find the details and location here.
