What if I make him strength 5 with hunter 2 instead?
ok, but the ease of capturing a minion should prabably make this a twilight companion. however it’s up to you. but if you are going to leave it at , i would make it strength: 5 and keep it hunter 1.
Yeah, that’s a good point. Okay. I’ll keep his current stats and put him at .
Thanks! |

Dáin’s DC Duos #83
We’re winding down with Elves. Just two more companions and two more events and we’re finished. Ah...bittersweet. For now, we’ll do the last two companions.
It’s not very often one can say that the non-unique companions in a culture are some of the best, but in this case, I think you actually can! Both of these guys are non-unique, and they could prove to be two of the most powerful companions in the entire culture! The first is a little easier to splash...he’s pretty good among other Elves or as the sole representative of his people. The second relies much more on his fellow Wood-elves, but can become an absolute beast with certain ones around. Other than that, I’ll refrain from comment and let you...enjoy!
Woodland Elf-Guard
Companion • Elf
Strength: 4
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
Hunter 1.
This companion is strength +1 for each captured minion in your support area.
Response: If this companion wins a skirmish, exert him and another Elf to capture a minion in that skirmish.
“Then the elves put thongs on him, and shut him in one of the inmost caves with strong wooden doors, and left him.”
Mirkwood Guardian
Companion • Elf
Strength: 5
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
Hunter 1. To play, spot a Elf.
While you can spot another ranger, this companion is a ranger.
While you can spot another hunter, this companion gains hunter 1.
While you can spot 2 other archers, this companion is an archer.
“If they have a fault it is distrust of strangers.”
One comment: his last ability is designed to end up with a total of his original hunter 1 plus 2 more for a total of hunter 3. Is it worded correctly? |

i think this is good. seems balanced.

i also think this works, but if i was the one making it, i would have made his base strength 5, and lost a hunter bonus for spotting another hunter. that way he’d end up with a total of hunter 2, but he would have a base of 5. either way, good cards.

i think you are correct, but others would know better than me. |

Looks good, but the archer part seems a bit good. You might want to drop that line.

I would think it would work that way. Make him 5 strength IMO |

Thanks for the reviews, all. I made some tweaks using a little bit of everyone’s comments. How are they now? |

Noted, but going strictly with the majority, two people said he seemed balanced and one person said he wasn’t. Sorry. Another review saying to go with 5 would make me lean that way, but until then I gotta go with the majority. |

Dáin’s DC Duos #84
I was thinking of holding this Duo off until tomorrow since it’s so late (especially with daylight savings and all), but A.) I’m likely not going to be on tomorrow until the mid- to late-afternoon, and B.) I want to finish off one subculture today and be ready to start fresh with another tomorrow.
So, thus ends our time with the Elves. Don’t worry. Don’t weep. Like all cultures (and subcultures) we’ve covered thus far, we will likely revisit them once all the other cultures are covered and fill in any gaps we see. But for now, say goodbye to the Wood-elves.
They go out with a bang, though, with two of their more potent events. Enjoy!
Hospitality of the Elves
Condition • Support Area
To play, spot a Elf.
Regroup: Exert 2 Elves to heal a companion (or heal a companion twice if at a forest sanctuary or forest dwelling).
“They gave him food and drink, plenty of both, if not very fine; for Wood-elves were not goblins, and were reasonably well-behaved even to their worst enemies....”
Who says that only their brethren are good at healing? Of course, you could easily have just one Elf around and use this with Elves...or use Good People and not worry about Elves at all!
Battle About To Be Joined
Event • Archery or Skirmish
Discard a weapon and a captured minion in your support area with X vitality to make X Elves strength +1 until the regroup phase (or, if you discarded a ranged weapon, make the fellowship archery total +X).
“‘Suddenly without a signal they sprang silently forward to attack. Bows twanged and arrows whistled....’”
Partially inspired by an idea from NBarden several Duos ago, I expanded on the idea and made an unusual two-in-one event. I did this not just to be lazy and save on making two cards , but to avoid you having four copies of each powerful ability in your deck and instead limit you to having four total between the two.
The skirmish text is pretty specific to Elves, but the archery text is nice for either or Elves, either of which can easily bear ranged weapons.
And that’s it! So long, Wood-elves. It’s been fun, at least for me. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed this first extensive new culture too.
Tomorrow, we get started on the last FP subculture, which you’ve probably guessed by now. If not...well, you’ll just have to wait and see.
EDIT: NBarden specifically requested that I create a Legolas, so here’s what I told him:
Quote: I have, but you have to remember: unless otherwise noted, all cards in the Duos are from my first set, Lasting Alliances, which is based almost entirely on The Hobbit and the Last Alliances of Elves and Men. Legolas probably WAS around Mirkwood at the time, yes, but since he’s not mentioned even in passing in the story, I left him out.
However, at least one Legolas DOES appear in a later set of mine (as well as other Elf cards). Since you specifically asked, I’ll spoil him now. Enjoy!
I’m going to add him--AND his bow--below for those who wish to see/review them.
•Legolas, Thranduilion
Companion • Elf
Strength: 6
Vitality: 3
Signet: Frodo
Archer. Hunter 1.
Archery: Exert Legolas and discard a card from hand to exert a minion (or wound an archer minion and make the minion archery total -1); Legolas does not add to the fellowship archery total.
“Stringing the bow and fitting an arrow he turned, peering back over the River into the darkness....”
•Legolas’ Bow, Woodland Bow
Possession • Ranged Weapon
Strength +1
Bearer must be an Elf.
Bearer is an archer.
Archery: If bearer is Legolas, exert him and discard a or archery event with a twilight cost of (X) from hand to exert a minion X times.; he does not add to the fellowship archery total.
“At that moment there was a sharp twang. Legolas had loosed his bow.”
NOW I’ll be gone for several hours, probably not back until after 3:00 EST. So you’ve got plenty of time to review these four cards. |
