the thing is, these guys shouldn’t be able to fight well at all, if there was some way you could prevent them from skirmishing, like you could exert a gollum minion to prevent them? it could keep them from dying so you can use them for larder/web

That’s pretty darn powerful. I’d make it let you choose between exerting a minion twice OR discarding a minion to play.

Okay, I’ll make a couple changes. Shelob’s Lair seems quite similar to Grond, Hammer of the Underworld.
