Gwaihir’s twilight cost is -1 for each Wizard companion and Eagle you can spot.
While at a marsh or underground site, Gwaihir is unhasty.
While at a battleground, forest, or mountain site, each minion skirmishing an Eagle loses fierce.

He could cost next to nothing in an Ent deck... I would raise his cost to and give him muster.
DáinIronfoot wrote: I’ll increase the twilight cost, but I think he has enough already without muster.
Why could he cost nothing in an Ent deck, though? He can’t spot them to reduce his cost...am I missing something?
So, anyone else?
My mistake; I mistook "Wizard companion" for " companion". |
I had to put something here. |

Ah, I figured it might be that. So does he still need to cost , then? |

“At that moment there was a sharp twang. Legolas had loosed his bow.”
Looks good. Maybe a bit too powerful though, so you might want to consider dropping the strength bonus.

Kewl. Maybe slightly underpowered though, so you could probably drop the spotting requirement for the maneuver ability.

While at a battleground, forest, or mountain site, each minion skirmishing an Eagle loses fierce.
“‘What’s all this uproar in the forest tonight?’”
First off, I think that you ought to add a small spotting requirement so that he can’t be splashed into any deck. Maybe something like "To play, discard 2 cards from play or hand".
The second problem is that his last ability only lasts during their skirmish, so they gain fierce right back once the skirmish is done. So I suggest something like this:
•Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles
Companion • Eagle
Strength: 12
Vitality: 4
Signet: Gandalf
Damage +1. To play, discard 2 cards from hand (or spot 3 cards).
Gwaihir’s twilight cost is -1 for each Wizard companion and Eagle you can spot.

“‘What’s all this uproar in the forest tonight?’”
I dropped the unhasty part, since he now has a spotting requirement and the card looked like it might have had too much text otherwise.
But this is only a suggestion, so you can do whatever feels right to you.

The only problem is that such a spotting requirement really limits you from using him with non-Lasting Alliances Eagles, since they’re mostly all cards outside of that one set. So how’s this?

I’ll just save the unhasty thing for a later version. There will be at least two more Gwaihirs in my sets...and I bet you can guess WHICH two sets, too. |

Okay, I think it’s safe to move on. If anyone has any comments, suggestions, or questions about any cards we’ve already passed, then please feel free to still bring them up, of course. That’s my standing policy. You can go all the way back to Duo #63 if you really want to!
For now, though....
Dáin’s DC Duos #86
These two Eagles are brand-spankin’-new. I just made them yesterday, and put the finishing touches on this morning. Why is that so unusual? Probably 80-90% of the cards I’ve done in the Duos are old...VERY old, like a year or more, from back when I was active over at the Decipher boards. I’ve made many new cards since then, of course, and some have made it into the Duos already. But rarely have even those been so shiny and new when I’ve unveiled them.
So, add these in with the other Lasting Alliances Eagle cards and we’re up to twelve instead of the original ten. I guess you can consider this a bonus Duo. Enjoy!
•Aeglirnen, Misty Mountain Eagle
Ally • Home 5 [LA] • Eagle
Strength: 8
Vitality: 4
Aeglirnen gains each home site of each Eagle ally.
Each time a minion is rescued, you may make Aeglirnen strength +4 and able to be assigned to skirmishes until the end of the turn.
“He had just strength to wonder what the messenger had meant by ‘prisoners,’ and to begin to think of being torn up for supper like a rabbit, when his own turn came. The eagle came back, seized him in his talons by the back of his coat, and swooped off.”
Pretty specific, yes. This guy’s all but useless unless minions are rescued. Of course, in that case, he’s an excellent deterrant. The Shadow player might think twice about trying to rescue a minion if it means unleashing a 12-strength angry Eagle on his head!
There’s a LITTLE more to Aeglirnen then meets the eye, though. He lacks the unhasty keyword that the majority of Lasting Alliances Eagles have, so he can skirmish with a still-respectable 8 strength at site 5...and spot Gwaihir, King of All Birds to add site 8 as well. Not too shabby.
As for the name, by the way, it’s very loosely translated as "mountain guard" in Sindarin.
•Reviaur, Eagle Escort
Companion • Eagle
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Signet: Gandalf
To play, spot a Wizard or 2 Eagles (or spot Gwaihir).
While the fellowship is at an underground site, Reviaur is unhasty.
At the start of the assignment phase, you may exert Reviaur to prevent him from being assigned to a skirmish and make another unmounted companion strength +4 and considered to be mounted until the regroup phase.
“‘It is a fair morning with little wind. What is finer than flying?’”
...and Reviaur is literally "fly morning" in Sindarin, about the closest I could get to "morning flyer" and still have a cool name come out of it.
Reviaur is unhasty sometimes with no real way to become ununhasty, but that’s okay, because he can be at his best when not skirmishing anyway! His assignment ability is partially inspired by Rohan Stable Master, but with a BIG strength boost thrown in. Awesome Ring-bearer protection, since it isn’t specific to unbound companions...just unmounted ones. Oh, and if you choose to not do all that, Reviaur can do plenty on his own with his Wizard-like stats.
Now, my question is whether I need more text. I know the ability might seem like a run-on sentence, but I THINK that, as written, Reviaur cannot be assigned until the regroup phase, and the other companion is both strength +4 AND mounted until the regroup phase. Yes? No? If no, how do I fix it? |
