Ahhh, so y’all want some more Gollum Shadow, eh?

Well, here’s the next batch.

These cards focus less on Shelob and more on - you guessed it - Gollum and his wickedly wicked ways.

Starting off nice and simple:

0 After the Ring Gollum
Event • Skirmish
Make Gollum strength +2 (or +4 if skirmishing a Ring-bound companion).
“‘Yes! We wants it! We wants it!’”
C38

And here’s the common version of Gollum.

2 •Gollum, Slave to the Ring Gollum
Minion
Strength-5
Vitality-4
Roaming-3
At the end of each phase, if the Ring-bearer is wearing The One Ring, you may exert Gollum to exert the Ring-bearer.
Skirmish: Exert Gollum to make Sméagol resistance -2.
“‘…I suppose the whole time it’s been “The Precious for poor Sméagol.” That’s the one idea in all his little schemes, if he has any.’”
C46

At first glance, this Gollum may not be as fiesty as past incarnations. However, most of the Smeagol-related cards in this set deal with Smeagol having a certain resistance rating (usually 5), so this Gollum can pretty much put a stop to the new Ring-bound Hobbit/Smeagol strategy. Not to mention Gollum’s power against early-wearing Rings such as The One Ring, Answer to All Riddles.

3 Into the Tunnel Gollum
Condition • Support Area
At the end of your shadow phase, exert Gollum or discard this condition.
Each time the fellowship moves, exert each wounded Ring-bound companion.
“Out of it came a stench, not the sickly odour of decay in the meads of Morgul, but a foul reek, as if filth unnameable were piled and hoarded in the dark within.”
R48

Again, I think the evil potential of this card can be overlooked at first read-through. Yes, it costs 3 and requires an exertion (which can be a good thing as you’ll see in the next card), but being non-unique, this card can exhaust companions fairly quickly as long as you’re willing to pay to keep it around (and if you want to use it for free in the regroup phase, pull it back with Shelob, Spider of Darkness).

2 •Gollum, Disheveled Gollum
Minion
Strength-5
Vitality-4
Roaming-3
While Gollum is exhausted, Gollum minions are strength +3.
Each time Gollum exerts or takes a wound, you may remove 2 to take a Gollum card into hand from your discard pile.
“‘No, no, not yet,’ Gollum whined. ‘O no! They can’t find the way themselves, can they? O no indeed. There’s the tunnel coming. Sméagol must go on. No rest. No food. Not yet.’”
R45

I fear this Gollum is on the edge of overpowered, but I like him anyways. All of a sudden those exertions piling up from Into the Tunnel become an asset to be abused. With three of those out, Gollum (and Shelob!) become even stronger, and for each exertion you can recycle a card... Like this one:

2 A Froth and Foam Gollum
Event • Regroup
Discard X Gollum cards from hand and spot Shelob to make the Free Peoples player choose to either exert a companion bearing a Gollum condition X times or discard that companion.
“Poison frothed and bubbled from the wound.”
R44

Yup. Shelob’s Cunning is even better now. Giving Shelob ambush [X] enables you to ensure a big regroup hurt (and paired with the new Wraith Orcs, generating twilight for the regroup phase is no problem at all!), and Gollum, Disheveled can get those required Gollum cards back into your hand. This event can utterly devestate an unprepared fellowship. It can target the Ring-bearer, and if it does, they’ll have no choice but to exert him or her to the brink of death (after all, Shelob likes her meals alive!).

Thanks for stopping by. Next time I think we’ll travel to those new Wraith Orcs I mentioned!

I was aware of Smeagol, Bearer of Great Secrets and decided that not only does my Gollum not crash the Solo Smeagol deck, but in my eyes there *should be* a card like it.

Consider:

Such a Little Thing kills Boromir, Bearer of Council
Terrible as the Dawn kills Galadriel, Bearer of Wisdom
Too Great and Terrible kills Gandalf, Bearer of Obligation

Those cards outright demolish ARBs. Gollum can corrupt Smeagol, but only if the FP player isn’t prepared to face him (just as any ARB player would lose to the aforementioned cards).

Changes to Into the Tunnel and A Froth and Foam made, according to SoP’s input (good calls).

GP Awarded to SoP and elf lvr!

Alrighty!

Today we begin our excursion into the new brand of Wraith Orcs, the host hidden in the Morgul Vale. These guys live in the twilight-death they seem to eek into the surrounding mountainside. Everything in Morgulduin is dead or dying, and everything exudes an eerie glow.

With that in mind, it was obvious to me that these guys had to deal with twilight tokens. In a big way. To balance things out, they deal their damage in the regroup phase (which leaves endless possibilities between this subculture and the new Shelob [after all, they’re neighbors!]).

Let’s just get right down to it, then.

To start things off, a few ways to generate pool.

0 Dismayed by Terror Wraith
Event • Response
If a companion exerts, exert a Wraith minion to add [X], where X is that minion’s remaining vitality.
“…and he felt only the beating upon him of a great power from outside.”
180

5 Garrison of Morgul Wraith
Minion • Orc
Minion-12
Vitality-3
Roaming-5
Each time the Free Peoples player plays an event, add 2.
While you can spot 8 twilight tokens, this minion is damage +1.
“All that host was clad in sable, dark as the night.”
C182

Really quickly, let me address the roaming change.
I’m approaching my minions in this set based on Frodo’s path during the latter half of The Two Towers. With that in mind, the Orcs of the Morannon are roaming at 3, Southrons and Easterlings are roaming at 4, and the Morgul Orcs are roaming at 5. Shelob remains at 8 (since she literally *is* on the bordor of Mordor).
This minion is a simple, effective way to return twilight to the pool.

0 It Has Begun Wraith
Event • Maneuver
Spot a Wraith minion and a Free Peoples condition with twilight cost X to add [X].
“Already the hour had struck, and at his great Master’s bidding he must march with war into the West.”
184

Maybe not the best system to build pool, but can be useful against cards like Elven Marksmanship.

Anywho. Enough with the generation aspects. Let’s get into the evil side of things.

1 City of the Nazgul Wraith
Condition • Support Area
To play, spot a Wraith minion.
At the start of the regroup phase, if you can spot a Wraith minion, you may spot the Ring-bearer with strength X and remove [X] to add a burden.
“The luminous tower fascinated him, and he fought the desire that was on him to run up the gleaming road towards its gate.”
R179

Can you say... non-unique?
Of course, that’s what the Ring-bearer gets, traveling all the way to the Morgul Vale without the slightest hint of preparations. All of a sudden your neglect for Frodo turns against you. With a low-strength Ring-bearer, it’s not too difficult to imagine multiple burdens being added each regroup phase.

And here’s one of the REALLY big hitter cards in this culture:

7 Piercing Heart and Mind Wraith
Event • Regroup
Spot 2 Wraith Orcs (or spot a Nazgûl) to reveal the Free Peoples player’s hand and discard each Free Peoples card revealed.
“…as if some force were at work other than his own will, he began to hurry, tottering forward, his groping hands held out, his head lolling from side to side.”
C201

Common!? You bet!
Is your opponent bragging about how easily it’ll be for him to double move because of a sweet hand? Well, get rid of it.

And on that note, here’s another way to put an end to a double move (after all, the horror of the Morgul Vale is paralyzing!).

4 Leading the Host Wraith
Event • Regroup
Spot a Nazgûl and a Wraith Orc to play the fellowship’s next site. Play X Wraith Orcs (each at twilight cost –X) from your discard pile, where X is the shadow number of that site.
“Soon he had passed, like a shadow into shadow, down the winding road, and behind him still the black ranks crossed the bridge.”
U186

Nazgul leads 1 Orc, Nazgul leads 5 Orcs! This card should put a stop to most fellowships. And, again, it’s not even a rare. Twisted Evil

I’m not sure where the spoilers will be next time. I think I should get into the Easterling culture.

Neat. I might say slightly underpowered. Perhaps add 1 for each threat, instead?

Sweet! If they play enough events, you get Damage +1. I might raise the strength to 12, though.

It works. Should add at least 2 in most cases.

This is really cool. It’s non-unqueness isn’t an issue, since you’ll always have to remove at least 3. And if the freeps leaves their Ring-bearer at 3 strength, well, they deserve a bunch of burdens!

Quote:

C201

Sweet double-stopper. Could backfire on your fellowship, though, giving them a bunch of shadow cards. But what if your freeps was solo smeagol? That would be MASSIVE hand clog.

Anyways, just speculating on the possibilities, the card seems fine. Since it’s a regroup event, I say it could stand to cost a bit less, perhaps 5.

Quote:

Whoa! Definate double-stopper. A freaking amazing way to stack orcs on web, if you use an Eater of Light deck. Is there any card of yours that really abuses Orcs being around in the regroup phase?
