Dáin’s DC Duos #95
Yay! Our first Triple Duo Day in quite a while.
It’s been suggested that I should abandon my attempt to have a signet renaissance and focus on resistance only. "Get with the times, old man!"
My argument has always been two-fold: 1.) signets are a potentially awesome game mechanic that was never utilized effectively and hopefully will be through my sets, and 2.) I don’t intend to ignore resistance; there’s plenty of room for signets and resistance to co-exist.
Today’s cards will hopefully show that I don’t intend to throw resistance out the window. Enjoy!
The Devastation of Dale
Event • Assignment
Toil 1.
Assign an minion to an unbound Man. If that Man has resistance less than 4, you may exert a Man.
“‘Later he used to crawl out of the great gate and come by night to Dale, and carry away people, especially maidens, to eat, until Dale was ruined, and all the people dead or gone.’”
We Can Do Nothing
Event • Skirmish
Make a companion skirmishing an minion strength -2 (or -3 if that companion has resistance 2 or less).
“‘They will be slain, and all our ponies too, and all our stores lost....’” |

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!
Also, if you're into DCs or RPGs (or even if you're not!), check out Realms of Middle-earth, the sequel to CG's "DC Adventure", Realms of the North! |

We Can Do Nothing
Event • Skirmish
Make a companion skirmishing an minion strength -X, where X is 4 minus that companion’s resistance.
[i]“‘They will be slain, and all our ponies too, and all our stores lost....’”[/i
Just my idea, don’t know if it’s better this way or not. |

Hmm.... probably balanced, but something about it just doesn’t click with me. I’m not sure what though.

Seems a bit underpowered, and I’m not sure if any card has ever had that wording (for each X less than Y). Maybe something like:
We Can Do Nothing
Event • Skirmish
Make a companion skirmishing an minion strength -1 (or -3 if that companion has resistance 2 or less).

hum compared to undisciplined, seems a little overpowered.

works for me, maybe each companion of resistance less then 4? |

Okay, I made some changes to both cards. (I actually did it last night, but then didn’t have time to post about it. )
I guess now is as good a time as any to make an announcment: I have something special planned for when we hit Duo #100. That will almost certainly happen this weekend, perhaps even tomorrow if reviews keep coming in as they have the last couple days.
So what does Uncle Dáin have in mind? You’ll have to wait and see, of course. But it involves more than just the Duos. Much more.
For now, though....
Dáin’s DC Duos #96
Let’s start things off today with a couple of Smaug’s most powerful cards. Enjoy!
Further Vengeance To Take
Event • Shadow
Search. You may add to play this event during the maneuver or assignment phase.
Play a Dragon or an or Orc from hand. Its twilight cost is -1 for each of the following Free Peoples races you can spot: Dwarf, Hobbit, Man.
If the minion played is Smaug, he is strength +1 until the regroup phase for each of the following races you can spot in the fellowship: Dwarf, Hobbit, Man.
“‘They shall see me and remember who is the real King under the Mountain!’”
The text is kind of long, I know. Is it okay? And if not, any suggestions on how to fix it?
•Roar and Rumble of His Fury
Condition • Support Area
To play, spot Smaug.
Shadow: Exert Smaug twice and remove (X) to discard X Free Peoples cards (except companions and allies). Discard this condition.
“He was breaking rocks to pieces, smashing wall and cliff with the lashings of his huge tail, till their little lofty camping ground, the scorched grass, the thrush’s stone, the snail-covered walls, the narrow ledge, and all disappeared in a jumble of smithereens, and an avalanche of splintered stones fell over the cliff into the valley below.”
Now THAT’S destruction! Got a couple conditions like Not the First Halfling, Standing Tall, or this set’s own Songs and Tales dragging you down? Need to knock out some archery special abilities on cards like Bow of Mirkwood or the devestating Black Arrow? Want to get rid of a bunch of weapons at once and make companions bearing them that much easier to destroy? Look no further.
THIS is the power some folks were probably waiting to see with Smaug. With his devestating claws, his fiery breath, and a swish of his tail, he can do a LOT of damage, especially when he goes on a temper tantrum like this. |

I tried to make it less confusing as possible, although it may have lost some identity for dropping the culture icons...

Cool, I liked it! Smaug’s obscene cost makes it balanced.

This is the best DC I have seen you make!

Once again, thanks for the reviews, guys! That first one was for you, FM, based on one of your suggestions from the very first review in this thread.
I like FM’s wording too...it IS more technically accurate. But then I think the card would have WAY too much text, which is why it’s worded so strangely in the first place. I like that lore.
So should I go with his wording and drop the lore, or leave it as is? Or does anyone have a shorter solution? |
Best regards, Dáin, Vice Aftokrator of the Chosen Ones

I would go with FM’s suggestion for the text and only keep the last sentence in the lore. |
I had to put something here. |
