Ok, next one on the line is sickofpalantirs, who’s had some trouble fine-tuning his formatting,so far. Let’s how how he’s done it this time, shall we?
Race Across the Mark
Condition • Support Area
Regroup: Discard this condition and exert a dwarf, an elf, and a man to make the move limit +1 for this turn.
Fellowship: Spot your exhausted Ranger to heal that Ranger (limit once per turn).
Card comment: Abilities should follow the cronological order of the turn, so Fellowship should come before Regroup. Also, still some formatting errors, which I can’t let slip anymore by round 3. The card is on and of itself ok, I’ll get to the title choice in cycle comments. One last thing, you should exert the characters and THEN discard the condition, since it’s the condition’s game text which is making you exert them, and it would make no sense to still have to do so AFTER the condition is no longer in play.
Grade: 7.0
Race Across the Mark
Condition • Support Area
Regroup: Discard this condition and exert a dwarf, an elf, and a man to make the move limit +1 for this turn.
Fellowship: Spot your exhausted Dwarf to heal that dwarf (limit once per turn).
R
Card comment: Same as before, with the downside of having an ability not tied to the dwarf culture, althoughI’d be fine with that, if not for the a]lack of creativity in copying the same game text from the other one. A tight cycle is not necessarily a mirrored cycle.
Grade: 6.8
Race Across the Mark
Condition • Support Area
[Regroup: Discard this condition and exert a dwarf, an elf, and a man to make the move limit +1 for this turn.
Fellowship: Spot your exhausted elf to heal that elf (limit once per turn).
R
Card comment: Same as the previous one, with the bigger downside of BOTH abilities not being "elf-like"...
Grade: 6.5
These cards are my tight cycle, cycle of conditions, and rare cycle.
Cycle comment: First thing, if you want to do a "mirrored" cycle that also gives other cultures an ability not belonging to them, give the condition one ability for each culture/race. Also, make it really TIE to that culture, like damage +1 for dwarves and archery for elves. I’m not even going through the fact that all the cards have the exact same title, which should never happen in a TCG, for it KILLS one of the coolest available abilities, and one not yet explored by LotR,too. I’m expanding the topic after thonnas7’s challenge, though. That being said, the cards DO feel like they’re at the corrrect rarity, and they are all fitting for being conditions, so that ups sop’s grade a bit.
Cycle grade: 7.0
Task grade: 6.88
Alatar, Wizard
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 6
While you can spot 3 wizards, each wizard is resistance +1.
Fellowship: Exert Alatar twice and discard a Gandalf spell from hand to play a Gandalf wizard from your draw deck or discard pile.
R+
Card comment: Ok, not sure what a Gandalf spell is, perhaps a spell? Well, sorry, but formatting is just starting to bother me. Abilities that need activation, or abilities not tied to a single sentence should have their own line on the card. Also, ":" marks ARE mandatory for formatting of the submitted design, AS pointed out every single time you missed out on those. The card is also quite powerful, although it could be allowed for a R+. VERY poor subtitle, also.
Grade: 5.8
Radgast, Wizard
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 8
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 7
While you can spot 3 wizards, the move limit is +1.
Maneuver: Spot X other wizards to make a wizard strength + X until the regroup phase. (Limit Once per turn)
R+
Card comment: I know there’s a limit on the card, but that does not make it any less broken! No cost at all? At least, there’re not THAT much Wizards around, and I liked the fact that you can spot Saruman to make your own companion stronger! Kind of ties the wizard subtype as the culture. Otherwise, same as the previous card.
Grade: 7.0
Pallando, Wizard
Companion • Wizard
Strength: 7
Vitality: 4
Resistance: 6
While you can spot 3 wizards, each wizard is strength +1.
Regroup: Add a threat to play the fellowship’s next site. (Replacing opponent’s site if necessary.)
R+
Card comment: Same nitpicks with this one, including the power level issue.
Grade: 7.0
This is my Rare + cycle, and my loose cycle
Cycle comment: I liked the cycle’s concept, but sop is still making too many begginner’s mistakes on card formatting for being so deep in the contest (and going into the next level, for sure), he has skill, but perhaps lacks the patience to make a tuned work? Also, I don’t know how "loose" this cycle could be considered, it still seems pretty tight, what with all of them having the same subtitle, having the same spotting requirements, etc.
Cycle grade: 9.0
Task grade: 7.8
Elven Vigor
Event • Response
If an elf wins a skirmish, you may heal that elf. If that elf was bearing a ranged weapon, you may make another elf strength +2 until the regroup phase.
U
Card comment: Wow... SOOOO broken! Costs too much, I mean, Savagery to Match Their Numbers was X-Listed right away. I’m not comparing this to it, but at uncommon rarity, I’d say it’s close enough. I loved the twisting of the ability, though, a cycle about twisting abilities into other cultures could’ve been a wonderful idea, let’s see if you figured this out.
Grade: 8.8
Ent strength
Event • Skirmish
If a companion wins a skirmish you may heal that companion. If that companion was an ent, you may also make an unbound companion strength +2 until the regroup phase.
U
The strength of the ents is unmatched by any of the free peoples of middle earth.
Card comment: I guess you didn’t figure the twist after all.
Grade: 8.8
Dwarven Stamina
Event • Response
If a Dwarf wins a skirmish, you may heal that dwarf.(If that dwarf was bearing a hand weapon, also make another dwarf strength +2)
U
Despite the heavy weapons and armor of the dwarves, they could continue in battle for hours.
Card comment: Nothing to say anymore.
Grade: 8.8
this is my uncommon cycle, and my multi-cultural cycle
Cycle comment: I liked the minor twist in the requirement for the second ability, made the cards not "mirrors" like the first ones. However, it’s a whole cycle of cards BEGGING to be banned, specially with the synergy dwarves and elves have, you could play a deck with 8 of these things!
Cycle grade: 8.8
Task grade: 8.8
sop missed out on making an "on-culture" cycle (I know his second one IS one, but as we agreed, I’m not assuming anything, it’s the designer’s responsability to tell me what he’s trying to accomplish), so he gets a 0 for it.
FINAL COMMENTS: As I already said, sop needs to remember the formatting tips I gave in the beggining of the contest. Also, remember, lore are sentences, so they need to start with capital letters, AND they need "." marks and quotation marks as approppriate. Sop is a good competitor, but might be in for a spin the next round unless he starts paying attention to detail, after all, we’re not looking for a generic designer, but for the ULTIMATE designer!
FINAL GRADE: 5.87 (yeah, a 0 does that to your final grade in such challenges...) |

Who’s next to get reviewed?
(and I hate to say this, but all the cards from SoP’s first cycle have a card title that has already been used: Race Across the Mark) |
