DáinIronfoot wrote: Thanks again for the reviews, everyone! I appreciate it, but I think I’ll leave them as they are. I purposely have just "weapon" for Shivering and Whispering because I intend to have at least one true ranged weapon for , and I think Gollum would certainly have the same reaction with that as he would with a sword. I’m also going to leave the cost of Dreadfully Easy at because people who reviewed its mirror image, Let It Give Us A Chance, thought that was fine at .
Don’t get me wrong, though. I very much appreciate your fast reviews. Sometimes I get the feeling people are just lurking and waiting for the next Duo the way you guys spring on them so quickly.
I’m waiting on some laundry to finish, heh. Plus I may or may not have much time to post cards tomorrow, so let’s do one more late-night Duo now.
Dáin’s DC Duos #56
Okay, NOW let’s get into the last couple riddles. Like I said before, these are related to Bilbo’s later encounter with Smaug, but as you can see, their uses are not limited to the large dragon. Enjoy!

Event • Response
Riddle.
If any number of threats are added by a Shadow card, exert a Ring-bound Hobbit twice (or Bilbo once) to remove that number of tokens from the twilight pool (or twice that many if you can spot a Dragon).
“‘I am the clue-finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. I was chosen for the lucky number....I am Ringwinner and Luckwearer; and I am Barrel-rider.’”
I like it. The wording is a little sketchy and it may not be that useful, considering most cards that add threats remove twilight for their cost, but it could be a gamebreaker.

Riddle. To play, spot a Hobbit.
Each time a Shadow player exerts Gollum or a Dragon, you may exert a Hobbit or add to remove a threat.
“No dragon can resist the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time trying to understand it.”
I’d bump the cost up a little an make it un-unique. Just an idea. Good cards, GP!
There’s LOTS more the to culture than just riddles, though. There’s plenty of stealth, tales, and other goodies. And we’ll get started with all that (time permitting) tomorrow. See you then! |

Riddle. To play, spot a Ring-bound Hobbit.
If you and an opponent have at least 3 cards in your hand, that opponent must name a card type. Reveal 3 cards at random from your hand, then discard each card that is of the named type and take the rest into hand. If no cards were discarded, that opponent discards 3 cards at random from his or her hand.
“‘What have I got in my pocket?’”
I actually liked the first version a lot better...

Riddle. To play, spot 2 Hobbits (or Bilbo).
Each time you play a riddle, you may remove a threat.
Maneuver: Discard this condition to play a riddle from your draw deck.
“‘It likes riddles, praps it does, does it?’”
Nice... although the counterpart can also play from the discard pile, so you might want to add that to Riddle-game as well.
DáinIronfoot wrote: Shivering and Whispering

Toil 1.
Spot a Hobbit bearing a weapon to prevent Gollum from being assigned to a skirmish until the regroup phase. Any Shadow player may wound Gollum (twice if that weapon is Sting) to prevent this.
“But at any rate Gollum did not at once attack him. He could see the sword in Bilbo’s hand.”
Nice, but to follow the pattern of real LOTR cards you should say ’...wound Gollum once (or twice if that weapon is Sting)...’
DáinIronfoot wrote: Dreadfully Easy

If a Shadow riddle is played, exert a Ring-bound Hobbit to cancel all effects of that riddle and return it to the top of its owner’s draw deck. Any Shadow player may heal a Ring-bound Hobbit (of your choice) and remove a burden to prevent this.
“Unfortunately for Gollum Bilbo had heard that sort of thing before....‘Dark!’ he said without even scratching his head or putting on his thinking cap.”
Nice.

I would add ’exert’ right before ’Bilbo’ to make it flow smoother, and change ’tokens’ to ’twilight tokens’.

I’d make it add instead of ; otherwise, you’d almost always want to add the twilight instead of exerting a Hobbit.

Oh yeah? Hmmm. Why, exactly? I’m not opposed to changing it back at all.

Dáin’s DC Duos #57
Today, we continue the culture with a little of Bilbo’s hospitality...despite not expecting a bunch of Dwarves in his home. Enjoy!
•Quite a Merry Gathering!
Condition • Support Area
Tale.
Each time you play a non-Hobbit companion, you may exert a Hobbit (or spot Bilbo) to heal every companion of that race.
“‘Tea! No thank you! A little red wine, I think, for me.’ ‘And raspberry jam and apple-tart.’ ‘And mince-pies and cheese.’ ‘And pork-pie and salad.’ ‘And more cakes-and ale-and coffee, if you don’t mind.’ ‘Put on a few eggs, there’s a good fellow!’ ‘And just bring out the cold chicken and pickles!’”
I wanted to cut something out of the lore, but the way it all builds and builds is to good to trim. You can just see the steam start to come out of Bilbo’s ears.
As for the card itself, I hope it’s balanced. I figured that since most of the time you’re playing companions in the fellowship, such wide-spread healing wouldn’t be too powerful.
•Gandalf Tea Wednesday
Condition • Support Area
Tale.
Maneuver: If the fellowship is at a dwelling or sanctuary, exert a Hobbit (or spot a Hobbit and a Wizard) and reveal X cards from hand to heal X unbound companions. Discard this condition.
“He rushed and put on the kettle, and put out another cup and saucer and an extra cake or two, and ran to the door.”
Here, I figured the specific sites would help keep this in balance, too. Am I way off base?

Awesome. You might want to make it unique, but since it costs 2 already you don’t really have to.

it seems kinda worthless, maybe prevent the adding of the threats or heal wounds or something

Here’s where he got it from:
The Hobbit wrote: The next day he had almost forgotten about Gandalf. He did not remember things very well, unless he put them down on his Engagement Tablet, like this: Gandalf Tea Wednesday. Yesterday he had been too flustered to do anything of the kind. |
